US 'ready to boost Gulf defence'

Featured Replies

Is Bush still in office? Wheres the "Change"?

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the US is prepared to bolster the defence of its Gulf allies if Iran develops a nuclear weapons programme.

Mrs Clinton said if the US extended a "defence umbrella" over the region, it was unlikely that Iran would be any stronger or safer having a weapon.

She was speaking in Thailand where she is attending a regional summit.

On North Korea, she said it must agree to "irreversible" denuclearisation before returning to multilateral talks.

"We have made it very clear to the North Koreans that if they will agree to irreversible denuclearisation, the United States as well as our partners will move forward on a package of incentives and opportunities including normalising relations," she told a press conference in the Thai resort of Phuket.

Arms race

Mrs Clinton said that Iran faced the prospect of sparking an arms race in its region if it pursued nuclear weapons.

"It may render Iran less secure, not more secure," she said.

Earlier, Mrs Clinton said the US was still offering engagement to Iran but warned that the "nuclear clock was ticking".

Foreign ministers from the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean), as well as EU and US envoys, met on Wednesday in Thailand.

Mrs Clinton reiterated President Barack Obama's policy that talks were still an option between Iran and the US, but that "crippling action" could also be considered.

So many free goodies to give out, so little time!

Nick, in your opinion has Obama done anything that you agree with?

And by the way, Clinton and Obama are dealing with the Iran issue much differently than Bush's whole "we'll never talk with Tehran" bullshit hardline crap. I mean come on. I for one am breathing a little easier with a real intellectual in the office of the president rather than some hard drinking fratboy redneck.

I might get hit by Jay for saying this;

I like the way he dealt with the Iranian protest, for the most part, I think he said too much but compared to most other leader or politicians he was quiet. Its not our business or our revolution, we should keep our nose out of the world's problems unless they directly concern us.

Is your name Aaron? I feel like a jerk for not remembering. My point is he's a lot like Bush only more suave. He's sending more troops to Afghanistan and talking of attacking Pakistan more and we have attacked inside their country several times since he's been in office.

Is he downsizing our involvement overseas? Not really

His economic policies are just like Bush's only bigger. They're both Keynesian's, thus similar economic views.(Spend, print and borrow)

I want real change, not similar or the same policies with a fresh face and words. I want smaller military, pull out of every foreign country, we cannot run an empire, stop funding other nations. We only like democracy when the country likes us. Uphold the constitution that Bush hated so much.

Obama supports the FISA bill and the Patriot Act.

Nick, yeah my name's Aaron, no worries

Surely you know that the world changed on 9/11. Bush started 2 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It would be incredibly foolish to just pull out now. It is not realistic. You can't criticize Obama only after 6 months in office. He is trying to pick up 8 years of Bush and Republican mess. Obama understands that we need to be over there for a little while longer. We will be out of Iraq by 2011. Bush was happy keeping us over ther indefinitely. My point is I feel like Obama cannot get a fair shake from anyone on the right. I have never seen a president get torn apart after such a short time in office. He has not had much time to do anything at all.

Heres the problem, he's only been in office for half a year but he's not trying to clean up Bush's mess, he's doing a lot of the same policies only bigger with a friendlier face, that why I'm attacking him so early on. 8 years of failed policies has shown what he's doing will not work, so 6 month's more of the same policies with a different face isn't change.

I don't see him making any steps towards any real change, only change on very small issues. I understand things take time after the mess were in, but he has not started to even clean it up but the amplify the core policies that created it.

We will be out of Iraq by 2011.

No we won't, were not even out of Germany or Japan. Just like we are "closing" down Guantanamo Bay? We are but we aren't, lol.

He's shown no signs of pulling us out of other nations were in, or downsizing our involvement in foreign affairs. And his economic polices are the exact same as Bush except for more taxes. 8 years of Failed policies and Obama continuing them, I don't have to wait to know how it'll turn out.

EDIT; if he was doing different things, even if I didn't agree with all of them, I'd give him time to see how things would go, but we can deduce from Bush's mistakes and him doing the same things that it is not going to work.

Nick, I'll agree that we will be in Iraq long after 2011. I was wrong on that point. However, it really is not logical for Obama to be this complete 180 in terms of Iraq and Afghanistan policy. It would be a bad idea to just pull out of there now. We made a mess which must be cleaned up. Bush is to blame 100 percent for Iraq.

On the other hand. Bush would have never made the kind of speech that Obama made in Egypt. He never would have reached out to our European allies the way that BObama has. There is a great deal of difference in the tone of Obama and the peace that he truly would like to see.

Yes and no, Congress is too(Both parties). But I agree we must clean up the mess we've made, but after that pull out of every nation! We cannot afford to be the world police. And Obama wants to continue to be the world Police chief just as Bush was.

I simply do not agree with you, I think he talks of peace but has yet to make any action towards it. I don't want a war with Pakistan but it might happen....Also were going to sell hi-tech weapons to India now! How is that unlike Bush?

Nick in the post 9/11 political climate of 2002-2003, Bush was able to bully any and all Congressmen and Senators into voting for the war. You know he had his way with congress back then. It is and will always be HIS war.

And by the way, Obama does not want to be the world policeman. He is reaching out his hand in peace in ways that bush could only dream of.

Got to go dude. Have a good night!

G'night, when you get back we'll talk some more. Its been fun.

That is a good point, but they had a duty to stand up for whats right now their political career's, so the blame must first go on Bush/Cheney and then on everyone who approved it. They put popularity over what is right and right for the nation, they should pay the same price as Bush's legacy will. To prevent such action again we must hold all accountable. This shouldn't be a Democrat or Republican issue, it should be holding everyone accountable for their actions.

All I see now is Obama selling weapons, and the possibility of war in Pakistan and more of the same aggressive stance against Iran.

But lets say he does not do that and finishes up Afghanistan, unless he pulls most our troops from other nations soil he isn't that much different then Bush. Its possible he may prove to be slightly better then Bush on Foreign policy but only better, is that all we'll settle for?

How do you explain his stance on FISA or the Patriot Act? And the fact he wouldn't let the troops coming home in body bags get their pictures released? Where is the transparency he promised? Destroyed by his support for FISA and the Patriot Act.

3rd his economic polices are the same as Bush's only bigger....!:shocked2:
