Christmas comes early as John Lewis unveils its seasonal window display

Only two days into October and with an Indian summer still hanging in the air, window displays at a John Lewis store are already packed with Christmas trees and other seasonal items.

With Christmas Day more than 12 weeks away, the store in Southsea, Hampshire has started selling baubles, giant stockings and mini Santas.

Like it or loath it, there is no escaping the sound of jingle bells as the major retailer clears the decks to make way for its most sparkling stock of the year.

While John Lewis has chosen to dress its windows ready for Christmas shoppers, other retailers are also stacking their shelves with seasonal goods.

Marks and Spencer is selling advent calenders in store and last month Tesco started selling 'Santa's Favourite' mince pies - with a best before date of October 28.

Customers complained about the Mr Kipling Exceedingly Merry Mince Pies decorated with a pastry Christmas tree.

It seems any religious meaning Christmas might have had for some people has been superseded by a three-month festival of consumerism.

We haven't even had Halloween or Bonfire Night yet, but already shops are gearing up for the festive season.

A Mind charity shop in Leeds withdrew Christmas cards left over from last year after its locks were glued by campaign group the Movement For The Containment Of Christmas.
