TORNADO OUTBREAK KILLS SIX IN SOUTH AND MID-WESTERN US

A series of tornadoes in the south and mid-western US have killed six people, injured several others and caused power failures for thousands in the region. Three residents of the small town of Cincinnati in Arkansas were killed by a twister early on Friday morning.

Tornadoes were later spotted near St Louis, Missouri and were blamed for the death of three people in the southern part of the state, authorities said.

At least two people in Arkansas and six in Missouri have been injured.

The tornado in Cincinnati caused damage near a local highway in the town's centre and points west of Washington County in Arkansas, county dispatcher Josh Howerton said, adding that there were "lots of injuries".

"It sucked me out of my house and carried me across the road and dropped me," Chris Sizemore, a resident of Cincinnati, told the Associated Press news agency.

The tornado hit the town, located about 20 miles (32km) west of the city of Fayetteville, around 0610 local time (1210GMT) on Friday, said Joe Sellers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oklahoma.

Tornado warnings were issued by the weather service for north-west Arkansas roughly 10 minutes before the storm struck.

Emergency responders were experiencing difficulties early on Friday in reaching damaged areas in the region because of power lines that had been knocked down, Rick Johnson, the deputy emergency manager for Washington County, said.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management said that power was out throughout Washington County.

A local airport cancelled flights due to debris on its runway in Benton County, a region near the Arkansas state lines with Oklahoma and Missouri, Matt Garrity, the county's manager of emergency services, told the CNN news network.

DESTRUCTION IN MISSOURI

The storm system that caused the tornado moved north-east into Missouri and was, as of Friday afternoon, maintaining its strength, which is unusual, Mr Sellers said.

Emergency Management Coordinator Brad Nash said two people died in Dent county in Missouri due to a violent storm. A third woman died when her home north of Rolla county was destroyed.

Six people were also reported injured - one critically - in Rolla, where power lines have been downed, hundreds of trees uprooted and at least 20 homes destroyed.

A storm destroyed three mobile homes and damaged other properties in Dent county, the National Weather Service said.

Storms were said to have damaged parts of nearby Pulaski County.

"There were several houses with half of them gone, roofs missing, power lines down, trees snapped off," paramedic Penny Cash told AP, referring to the destruction in Pulaski County.

A combination of warm, wet air in the region and colder air moving in from the west created the conditions necessary for the tornado, Mr Sellers said.

"Anytime you have a significant change in air mass there is going to be unsettled weather marking the two different air masses," he added.

THE DEATHS IN CINCINNATI AND MISSOURI PUSHED THIS YEAR's COUNT OF TORNADO-RELATED FATALITIES IN THE US TO 41.

AUSTRALIA's QUEENSLAND FACES 'BIBLICAL' FLOOD

A senior official has described the flooding in Queensland, Australia, as a disaster of "biblical proportions".

State Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the economic impact would be severe, with huge costs compounded by lost income from mining, farming and tourism.

ROCKHAMPTON, where 77,000 people live, is the latest city bracing for impact, amid warnings of 30ft (9m) floodwaters.

More than 20 other towns have already been left cut off or flooded across an area larger than France and Germany.

The crisis has been triggered by Australia's wettest spring on record. At least six river systems across Queensland have broken their banks. The floods have affected about 200,000 people, and many have been evacuated.

"We're still directly battling floodwaters, we haven't seen the peak of the flood yet at centres like Rockhampton," said Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who toured the stricken areas.

'HUGE COST'

There are concerns that damage could cost billions of Australian dollars to repair.

Mr Fraser has had to delay a fiscal and economic review in order to account for the costs of the floods.

"In many ways, it is a disaster of biblical proportions," he told journalists in the flood-hit town of Bundaberg.

"The cost to the state will be huge - both in direct costs such as rebuilding roads, and other damaged infrastructure and providing relief payments to families - but also in lost income, while the mining, agriculture and tourism sectors recover," he said.

"Royalty forecasts are likely to be hit with freight lines cut and reports that many mines may not reach full production again for two to three months."

In some areas the waters have been receding, but around Rockhampton they are still rising.

Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carter said about 40% of the city could be affected when the Fitzroy River reaches its expected peak next week.

"We know we have prepared as best we can - most people who are expecting water to inundate their houses have evacuated," he said.

He said others who needed to evacuate would be advised to leave their homes, and those who refused could be forced to leave.

The town's airport was closed to commercial flights, and Mr Carter said the area was likely to be cut off for 10 days.

"The community is still expecting to have significant amounts of flood waters at the height of about 8.5m into the middle of January," he said.

Among the areas already hit by the flooding are Emerald - a town of some 11,000 people - and two smaller towns, Theodore and Condamine, which have been completely evacuated.

In some areas, helicopters were used to deliver supplies and food to cut-off householders.

Queen Elizabeth II has sent her "sincere sympathies" to people caught up in the flooding.

AUSTRALIA FLOOD (compared to an INLAND TSUNAMI or called FLOOD of the CENTURY)

AUSTRALIA'S FLOODS aka. FLOODS OF THE CENTURY aka. INLAND TSUNAMI

The Australian state of QUEENSLAND experiences the worst flooding for more than 50 years.

The floods in Queensland in north-eastern Australia covers an area as big as France and Germany combined.

Water masses submerged large parts of QUEENSLAND which cost at least 20 human lives.

On 10 January 2011, in TOOWOOMBA west of Brisbane, a 2m high wave of brown river water washed away people, cars and houses. Many people were evacuated by helicopter from house roofs where they had sought refuge.

In the Australian flooded areas 10 have died in the night between Monday 10.1 and Tuesday 11.1. Numerous additional people may have died as between 66 and 78 inhabitants are missing - so the police.

The heavy rain is expected to continue until March.

Numerous dam breaches and cloudbursts have worsened the situation in Queensland.

The water masses are now approaching Australia's third largest city - BRISBANE. Police recommended the inhabitants in parts of Brisbane to leave their homes.

Brisbane's mayor said that Brisbane was facing a flood worse than the flood in 1974.

About 15,000 are expected to be affected to some extent.

So far the floods are expected to reach a peak on Thursday 13.1.11. This will probably imply flooding of about 6,500 homes and businesses according to Queensland's Prime Minister, Anna Bligh. The police said that about 9,000 homes could be under water by Thursday.

Large parts of Brisbane are cut off by water from the river. The water level is expected to rise by 6m in the next couple of days. Cars are washed away by the water in Brisbane.

Evacuations have taken place in some quarters and are ongoing in other areas of Brisbane.

THE REASON WHY AUSTRALIA IS HIT BY FLOODS

The Australian state of QUEENSLAND experiences the worst flooding for more than 50 years.

The natural disaster is so comprehensive because the weather phenomenon LA NIÑA intensifies the RAINY SEASON extraordinarily and at the same time as the TROPICAL STORM, TASHA that hit the eastern part of Australia during the Christmas time. La Niña intensifies / reinforces what happens every year in the eastern part of Australia around this time of year, i.e. the start of the rainy season. So says Danish Radio / Television's weather editor Jesper Theilgaard.
