IT was fright night in Manchester as thousands of Zombies invaded the city - for charity. They shuffled slowly out of the Printworks, groaning, screaming and shrieking, on their way to the Arndale centre.

Among the Zombies on parade was city centre council chief Pat Karney. The fun event was to raise money for Manchester's cancer hospital The Christie and also a bid to break the record for the world's largest zombie gathering.

But organisers fell well short of the current record of 4,026 with only around 2,500 turning up for the event. Mr Karney, who was taking part in the procession with his 13-year-old nephew Matthew Collins, said: "It was great fun. Everyone was laughing their heads off for about three hours and it was in a great cause. "It was one of the best days out I have had in Manchester. Going through the Arndale when it was closed with about 2,000 zombies was something I will remember until the day I die."

The evening started off with a zombie wedding and a mass dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller - and ended with the `zombie ball' back at Pure nightclub at the Printworks. Horror fan Tim Page, 34, a surveyor from Rossendale, said: "It's all going towards Cancer Research but getting to dress up as zombies is a bonus. Some friends and I helped create a publicity trailer on the internet. We're all big horror fans so an event like this is great."

Friend Jenny Hirst, 27, a hairdresser, said: "I don't like scary films. But it's all for a good cause."

Cleaner Paul Stanley, 46, from Swinton, also made an effort for the event, dressing up in bandages and sporting fake wounds. He said: "It took me about an hour to get ready between the costume and make-up. I took an old judo suit and converted it. I'm supposed to be a kung fu zombie."

we had one of those in Toronto too

How is that any different from any other Saturday night in Manchester?

The best we have in Ireland is large groups of drunkards

or little children dancing ( badly ) to Thriller.
