Your Computer's Security Set-up

Featured Replies

Not being too technical about it, I would just like to know how Coldplaying members view computer security nowadays.

I believe all of us at one point has been victimized by malware (viruses, worms, trojans, etc.), which is never a good experience. Reading tech forums I found out that it is better to prevent malware from entering the system, than finding how to remove it.

So basically, my computer set-up in inexpensive (read: free) and involves:

1. anti-virus/anti-malware with resident (realtime scanner) - Avast (free)

(on-demand) - Malwarebytes (free)

2. outbound firewall (with defense+ hips - host intrusion prevention system) - Comodo (free)

3. more secure browser - Mozilla Firefox

I also download and install Windows patches whenever available. Of couse, this concern specially pertain to Windows users, as I've read that Mac and Linux (and derivatives) user are not that susceptible to malware and other exploits.

I would be interested to know your thoughts on this.

Norton Internet Security 2010

Netgear Router Firewall (so I have 2 firewalls running)

I had Norton 2007 on my PC and it hogged the RAM like a son of a bitch, does it still do the same?

Even so, considering all of no_wow's choices are free, Norton is something you must buy.

Set Windows updates to automatic but keep a look out for Windows Genuine Advantage, don't download or install anything to do with that. More trouble than it's worth.

are you planning to hack our computers soon? :wtf:

They changed it with 360 and IS 09/10 it doesn't hog the Ram up anymore than other all-time anti-virus stuff, there is a good reason i'm running Norton, it was free with my warranty :wink3:

You can avoid WGA on XP, not on Vista/7

Zonealarm

AVG

Adaware

Spybot

Cwshredder (haven't had any alerts with this for a LONG time so maybe these exploits no longer apply?)

This combination has worked very well for me for 5+ years...never a threatening virus. They are all free, but Zonealarm needs to be tweaked by the user, the forums aren't bad for that if you're looking for advice.

That's gay because it doesn't even work properly, and in some cases when technicians reformat your computer you can't do anything about not having a legit Windows copy except buy another one
