12 Coldplay Months of 2009: APRIL (9 Drum Machines Drumming)

April was a slow-news month that saw Coldplay take some well earned time off from touring after being drenched in Abu Dhabi. But being Coldplay meant they could not rest for long. After only 3 weeks the band was back in the studio with Brian Eno, working on their next album.

April Fools!

Of course April 1st could never be April first without the now traditional glut of media-based April Fools pranks.

Coldplay.com issued a statement detailing the band's plans to record the next album in a zero gravity environment on the advice of Brian Eno. http://www.coldplay.com/newsdetail.php?id=374&page=180

Sigur Ros also chimed in on LP5, announcing that singer Jonsi and keyboardist Kjartan would be participating on four new songs:

"we are now happy to announce that kjartan (keyboards) will be writing and arranging strings for 4 songs on coldplay’s as-yet-untitled follow up album to 2008's acclaimed 'viva la vida'," the message reads.

"kjartan has already completed most of the arrangements, which are set to be recorded in late spring. in addition to kjartan’s contribution, jonsi will join chris martin on vocals on one of the album's songs. "we were fortunate enough to be allowed to visit coldplay's rehearsal space while jonsi and chris were rehearsing their collaboration, which promises to be nothing short of amazing. we filmed a short video from the session, which is viewable on youtube here."

Finally, there was Bruno. Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego had a little surprise planned for the world too:

"Sacha Baron Cohen [pictured] has pulled in two high-profile conspirators with his prank-happy character, Bruno. British newspaper the Mirror reports that U2 frontman Bono and Coldplay warbler/Gwyneth Paltrow beau Chris Martin have banded together with Sacha—in his guise as gay Austrian TV personality Bruno—to record a single.

The song, rumored to be titled "Dove of Peace," mocks the efforts of charitable music foundation Band Aid—which Bono participated in with the 1984 single "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

Martin has also developed a reputation as a musical do-gooder, particularly with his support of fair trade practices. But that didn't stop the pair from playing along with Cohen's spoof. The song, which has already been partially recorded at legendary Abbey Road studios, bears the couplet, "For people of Africa who live in hell/ They will never wear Chanel."

"Chris Martin was in stitches throughout the recording and only just managed to get his lines out," says a spy at the session.

Other songsters rumored to be participating in the song include Madonna, Sting, Elton John and the Village People. The track will be included in the upcoming movie Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt. Interstingly, Bono recently insulted Martin during a BBC radio interview, characterizing the Coldplay singer as a w@nker."

From the Studio

Three Weeks into the tour break, Roadie #42 joined the band in the Studio for another recording session and reported on some of the developments.

Of particular interest was a programmed drum track that Will had come up with:

"Will has a new toy for drum programming which has sent him on a beat-making odyssey. He rolls up today with a new idea and announces cheerfully to all that, "It's in seven four time and it's 168 bpm". For those of you less versed in music theory, "Seven four time" means that when he kicks off the drum machine, everyone spends a lot of time asking, "Where's the one?". Meanwhile, "168 bpm" means that everyone is getting confused very quickly.

"

Also in development were "the most filthy funk I've heard from these guys" and another track with a rare time signature, this time in 5/4 time.

Light Through the Veins

Sections of musician and Viva la Vida collaborator Jon Hopkin's track "Light Through the Veins" were borrowed to open and close Coldplay's album under the title "The Escapist".

On April 27 the amazingly beautiful original track was made available as a free digital download for a limited time in anticipation of his new album "Insides" which was coming out on May 4th.

In the News:

Lawsuit

Meanwhile in the land of the Satriani lawsuit, Coldplay's lawyers filed a response in federal court denying any wrongdoing and arguing that the Satriani song "lacks originality". Satriani's lawyers continued to insist that the matter could have been settled without a lawsuit.

Twitter Champs

With a then astounding 425, 408 followers, Coldplay passed the king of Twitter Stephen Fry's 370,110 followers to become the most-followed UK celebrity. With 2,335,652 and 1,156,904 followers respectively and counting, the reason for the fail whale becomes suddenly apparent.

Tap Tap Revenge

An iphone app that lets you tap along to favorite songs was released as a special Coldplay edition. It was originally released with 10 of the band's major singles and artwork inspired by their videos.

So I got some more pieces up. I guess that's the bulk of what happened over the month. I'll continue to add bits and pieces when I can fit them in around post-Christmas stuff.

Thanks for the well wishes and yes I am feeling a bit better now. Sorry for the delay, but pneumonia wasn't exactly my idea of what to do with pre-Christmas free time either.
