Start to play the bass!

Featured Replies

Hello! Last Christmas I bought a bass so I've just started.

I'm on my own, I mean I don't have teacher, so it's quite hard to learn. I've a book and of course Internet helps a lot, tabs, youtube, forums,....

:guitarist:

I've been studyinf the notes, and some songs, but I haven't played any Coldplay song yet, so I wonder what song would you recommend me to start. I'm keen on playing God put a smile..., Sparks, Everything's not lost, or whatever it's not very difficult but sound good.

One more thing, I'd like you to correct my English if there's something realy worng, because I'm just learning.!:embarrassed:

:P

THANK YOU!!

In My Place, Clocks, Fix You.

Quit playing God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, Sparks and Everything's Not Lost.

These are not easy at all!

I can learn you some bass playing, if you want.

Thank you. The problem with these songs It is that is hard to work out how the bass sounds, that's why I wanted to play the others because at least it's easier to "hear" the bass. But of course it will be better to start with an easy one. Thanks for the help. What do you mean when u say u can learn me bass playing?

I started to play bass on my own too, and the first song I could play was In my place. You should start with that I think! :)

If you want I can give you some tips, basics you need to know and stuff.

If you learn it yourself right how it supposed to be, you have to be very lucky, because bass playing aint just only hitting the bass notes at all.

To be honest it's even harder than playing guitar IMO (alot of years experience)

That would be really good all help is great. I'll try with in my place. I can play a few parts of songs but there's only one that I play complete and in the real speed which is ONE by U2.

Start with only 1 song, don't wan't to learn 10 songs at once.

Decide what you want to play: fingers, pick or thumb.

Some important things for playing with the fingers:

- Play with two fingers and put your thumb on the pickup, don't push on your thumb but only put it there.

- Never ever, NEVER rest your right arm on the body, try to make your wrist as straight as possible.

BAD:

GOOD:

The only thing that will touch the bass from the right arm are: Thumb and playing fingers.

Keep your playing fingers as straight as possible, and don't play with the nails, only flesh(it depends on the sound you like tho.)

Left hand:

Play in the scale, so every finger gets it's own fret, don't lay your finger over more strings, play with the finger tops only.

The harder part: Keep the notes short and mute the bass when the snare plays.

Also for this hand, try to keep the wrist straight.

IMPORTANT: If you don't keep your wrist straight, you will get serious problems with it, and it can take years untill it solves, be carefull.

you know i'm not a bassist, too, but coldplay songs (if you got the right tabs or if you play it correct by ear) are not what i call difficult on a bass!? i don't see why one would quit with GPASUYF, though Sparks and Everything's not lost might be a little tough...

and why do you recommend Fix You when you think that GPASUYF is inappropriate !? :D

edit:

wow, i never knew about the wrist...]]

maybe another song would be Don't Panic... or Trouble (they are a little more advanced, but not too hard)

If you play GPASUYF just by notes, it's not hard(not easy too..) but if you play it the correct way, each finger per fret, it is.

Fix You is slower, less chance for mistakes and a good song for learning the fret hand.

If you start with GPASUYF at the start.. the song is too fast to handle because you have to use only one finger top(!) for fret 11 on A and fret 11 on D.

I play bass now for 6 year serious but it's still hard a sometimes..

Don't panic and Trouble are also songs that are better to wait with.

Oh and get rid of the tabs, don't start with it yet.

Tune the bass, start the song and find the note.

Try to sing the note before you find it on the bass.

Thanks!! Now I need to translate all .... :)

Is the bass guitar the first instrument ever you've tried to play?

Yes it is. At least seriously. I tried with spanish guitar but I never played anything.

Woah, good luck. Not the best choice for someone who just starts playing music on their own, I suppose. But I've never tried to play bass, so I don't really know...

I think if you can play the guitar first, it's not that hard to learn the bass. I've played the guitar for 3 years, and bass it's pretty easy now.

Yeah but I love the deep sound of bass.... In the future I'll try with the piano or who knows with the saxo! XD

Ok, I will explain my story, I've always wanted to play an instrument but for some different reasons I never could. So now that I'm older I've started on my own.

Why the bass? well, now I realise that I've always put the bass louder (hope you understand my English), and I've said I tried the guitar but I don't know, I didn't "feel" it, that sound strange, and I started realising that I loved the way the bass is played (with fingers I mean)... and then I went to a U2 concert and Adam was amazing.... and I was amazed. I started searching fot bass covers, and videos, and saw how Flea (RHCP) plays.... and I don't know, I suppose that it was all kind of things that finally turned out to be a bass.

I saved money and I bought it....

And I love it

I don't get why people keep thinking that bass is the same as playing guitar? :wtf: It's totaly different..

ontopic:

Piano? TIP: DO IT!! Since I play piano seriously it helped me ALOT of theory...

So you like U2 eh?

This U2 song is nice and easy to play:

Ah, I completely understand you :) I would love to play bass, but don't know how difficult it could be for someone who has never played even the guitar. I've only been playing piano for 8 yrs...

But it really attracts me. There's not many people who play bass, and almost no girls at all...

Your English is OK btw, but forget about mine

C'mon!!! You've played piano for 8 years!! The bass will be a joke for you. Look I'd never ever played any kind of instrument ( recorder at scool doesn't count:dozey:) and yeah it's hard and i don't think i will play very good at all but i really have fun. So if you like it and you have the money to afford it why not? Just try! It' s great when it sounds... I bought a pack which is much cheaper to start.

I'm 16 by the way. And you???

8 years of keys indeed helps, but it's everything but the same. :)

What bass do you have Koala?

Well, 8 yrs is a long time, but playing piano isn't what I'm really good at (in fact I wasn't that keen of playing it, I wasn't really interested in classical music). I stop visiting the music school when I was 14, but since I got to know Coldplay, I've been trying to play their music and it gives me much more pleasure. Anyway, I'd like to try playing another instrument, piano doesn't seem to be the best for me...

I'm also 16.
