2. I do relate to my sig and the overall mood of the song, although I'm hesitant to presume we're in complete agreement as to its meaning based on your question.

3. I do not support nihilism under my current understanding that it implies there is no such thing as meaning or value, and thus, pursuit of either is meaningless. Though I might agree there is no inherent meaning to life, I currently agree with the positive aspects of modern existentialism in which one defines and pursues one's own essence and meaning through actions.

Yes I think religion is based on rationality. That's why it makes sense to a lot of people to be religious :) Religion dismisses murder, adultery et al which is rational.

Whether you believe religion comes from God or it was invented... either way, it comes from a source which is rational :P

First of all, I do not condone the killing done by the dictators you mention.

It is however true that a greater harmony and agreement is seen when everyone follows the same ethical code. Otherwise, conflict erupts!

 

Don't get me wrong, I do think rationality should be used to make decisions and guide us. And I think religious is the main source of rational thinking! I just think our ethical guidelines should be on religion (and the rationality that stems from religion).

 

Deriving rationality outside of religion... that's where I think things will go crazy. Rationality outside of religion is more a personal thing, don't you think? So it's difficult to base ethics on those... no? :thinking:

So far we've referred to 'religion' without any direct reference to what it implies. Obviously I could throw out any of a number of religions and demonstrate something that most rational human beings would find fundamentally wrong, but somehow I expect I'd be missing the point.

 

Doubling-back...explain to me where 'religion' comes from and why/how it transcends human thought/ethics.

If you reply, 'because it comes from God.'

My reply will be 'what God? Which God?' expecting you to advocate some particular religion and then demonstrate how you know what you believe is correct.

1. How do you determine what is rational? If you know the answer without referring to religion, then religion is unnecessary.

 

2. I'm not religious and I agree that murder and adultery are wrong, so do the vast majority of people.

Where religion comes from?! I'm in no position to answer that! It's different for each religion and there isn't one singe answer.

As for why/how it transcends human thought/ethics? I think it's clear that successful societies are those based on religious guidelines. Religion does not transcent human ethics because human ethics comes from religion!

 

I do not believe you would know the answer without referring to religion. Even if you don't believe in religion, your ethics are influenced by it. Religion is useful to give humans purpose in life even if it is a myth invented by humans, as you say.

 

I agree though, we're wayyy off topic now and gone into another dimension! :P
