what would happen if all of the women's rights activists of the 19th century thought that way? or how about the civil rights activists of the '60s? susan b. anthony & martin luther king, jr. died before their dreams could come true, but what if they had the mentality that nothing matters after i die? women wouldn't be able to vote & would be treated as second class citizens, & we would still be living in segregation

i think you are confusing nihilism with giving up

it is far from it

it is seen more as a self actualisation, acceptance and understanding which once conquered can improve your motivation to achieve things.

it doesn't kill passion and you are still the same person.

i guess i sort of agree w/ you. just out of curiosity, do you believe in an afterlife? i do, btw, & i believe our whole existence is to please God. and how, you may ask, do you please God. well, by being a good person, helping others, & acknowledging His will. this life is so trivial & short, but the after life is forever.

I don't think our existence here in the world is all to please God. But then again it depends on how religious you are.

I'm gonna live my life the way I want it. Sin after sin (or what would be considered one) if that's what makes me happy. And I'm not gonna waste my life doing things to please him in hopes of going to heaven instead of hell.

who told you this?

there is no proof of god

there is no proof of no god

why is he completely supernatural?

why do you need faith?

how does god help those who help themselves and why do they need helping if they have already helped themselves? that sounds like people giving credit to god when they have achieved something themselves. people don't give themselves enough credit.

a god makes things easier to explain things

it's what i was taught. i was also taught that one of the biggest sins is pride, giving yourself too much credit when God is the ultimate reason why everything happens to you. again, i can't prove this, that's just what faith is. and yes, this does give me comfort & helps explain things to me. i have nothing against atheists or agnostics, unless they're assholes like bill maher who think that if you believe in God you're just retarded & have no common sense; to each his own. i just know that i truly am happy w/ my life. i can accept the things i can't change. i know that everything happens for a reason, even if i can't really understand what that reason is. my goal isn't to convert anyone, or help someone "see the light," but if you're even in a bad mood i will always try to comfort you. mainly by pointing out the beauty of life

i'm reading this at the moment

I did a philosophy class and we touched on absurdity, nihilism, and all that fun stuff.

Not another debate about god :uhoh:

I didn't post in the other thread simply because I'm not going to have a discussion with someone about something I'm not even sure of myself.

And I agree with alot of Ivet said :nice: possibly all of it.

I'm pretty confident in where I'm going and what my purpose is.

but it says life has no purpose, so why don't i just give up?

i'm going to be taking a philosophy class in the fall, these concepts will come in handy!

btw, the purpose of the thread is not to discuss God, it's to remind us that w/ all the crap going on our lives, & as pathetic as we may think we are, we must remember: it could be worse. so make the best out of the situation

just because life has no purpose doesn't mean you can't do things that will make you happy and you have to give up, there is just a self awareness. things don't need a purpose, things can just be.

to me that is far more depressing than the realisation of the meaninglessness of life. that is a lack of control, what is the point if god has it all figured out? if i believed in this i would be more inclined to kill myself than if i was a nihilist.

why do you know that everything happens for a reason? (once again i'm not saying this is fact, just saying what i think like you are) that seems like a disclaimer for people who have a bad life and don't want to take charge of it or allow people to persecute them (which is what a lot of organised religion has been used for). invisible man in the sky has it sorted so no matter how crap things get don't worry there's eternal life waiting for you, unless you're bad so shut up and do as we say.
