Daybreak loses 200,000 viewers in a week as Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles fail to attract a bigger audience

Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles's defection from BBC to ITV was hailed as a coup for ITV, who hoped they could rescue the channel's struggling breakfast viewing figures.

But just a week after their much heralded debut on new morning show Daybreak, the presenting duo have failed to pull in the anticipated bigger audience.

The much-hyped GMTV replacement has lost 20 per cent of viewers in just over a week - dropping from its debut of 1.015million to 800,000 this week.

Despite pulling in star guests like Tony Blair and Prince Charles, more Brits still prefer to wake up with BBC Breakfast, who are averaging 1.4million viewers.

Even on Daybreak's launch day on September 6, BBC Breakfast trounced its rival by an average of 400,000.

Just two days later on September 8, Daybreak's audience had slipped to an 891,000 average, with BBC Breakfast attracting 1.42million.

Despite the plummeting figures, Daybreak is still faring better than the last few weeks of GMTV, which was averaging 689,000 viewers a day in August.

A Daybreak spokesman said: 'Daybreak has made a strong start in a very competitive breakfast television market, with viewing figures for its first week up over 11 per cent on the average for GMTV.'

While obviously targeting a different time slot with The One Show, the chemistry between Bleakley and Chiles attracted an average of 4.3million viewers to the BBC evening show in April before they left the Beeb.

Chiles sensationally quit The One Show after Chris Evans was hired as a Friday presenter and signed a rumoured £6million deal in April.

Following a few weeks of dithering over contract offers from both the BBC and ITV, Bleakley's former employers withdrew their £900,000 two-year deal in June, leaving her to sign a £4million deal with ITV.

Meanwhile, a YouGov poll found that over half of those questioned preferred GMTV to Daybreak.

Only 16 per cent thought Daybreak was better than its predecessor, while 18 per cent thought there wasn't much difference between the shows.
