🌙 COLDPLAY ANNOUNCE MOON MUSIC OUT OCTOBER 4TH 🎵

Karkwa

I know they had a thread partially dedicated to them, but that started off as a poll as to who people hoped would win the Polaris award. I figured it was time they had their own thread solely for themselves as hopefully it will attract more attention.

It's taken me a while to get hold of the new album but today I heard it in full and I have to say it is stunning. They remind me of Arcade Fire mixed with Sigur Ros. I was intrigued as to whether they could pull off songs with less energy but I'm so happy that they have managed it in this album in some of the slower tracks. There is a lot of beauty in the new album.

So what has everybody heard so far?

And are people still as eager about them now as they were the other week after winning the award, or has interest died down a little? For me it certainly has not.

Karkwa (I should learn to use the search button one minute later)

Hey all, figured there should be a thread on this band.

They won the 2010 Polaris Music Prize, a prestigious Canadian award.

They are a francophone band but still rather awesome.

You can listen on myspace here: http://www.myspace.com/karkwa

That's so weird, to say the thread which has mentioned them hasn't been posted in for like a week!

Yeah exactly.

I'm glad you got to listen to the album in full. It's unfortunate it has such a small release right now since a lot of the global audience can't acquire it legally without ordering it and spending an arm and a leg on shipping.

I'm still loving the album. I bought it in July when I was in Montreal since most cd stores here don't have a francophone section.

It has been in my cd player ever since. A great album to just relax to at night with.

After recently getting into Serge Gainsbourg my eyes have recently been opened to French music. I know a little from CocoRosie's work with Spleen, a beatboxer/rapper who appears in some of their songs, but I had dismissed it given the language barrier. Pure ignorance on my behalf considering I like Sigur Ros and do not understand what they say, so there is no reason why I cannot listen to beautiful French music as well.

I really hope this band gets the recognition they deserve now, and that their music can become more widely available for people. I know that the music stores around here don't have francophone sections. Looks like I have a lot of exploring to do.

Considering the time lag, the double thread thing is a little bit creepy/odd. :laugh3: But totally deserved. :smug:

I got the album just before the prize was announced and have been listening obsessively for weeks now. It will probably be top 5 for my albums of the year. It's so, so beautiful. *swoons*

^ A, I never look in the world section for music.

But come on! Karkwa is from Canada and filed under world section?

I highly highly highly suggest people who like Karkwa to also check out Marie-Pierre Arthur. Some of the folks from Karkwa are in her band (or at least on the album and when they play live)

At HMV they had them in the "world music" section. It looked like most popular foreign language stuff was stocked there. (Which is silly since Sigur Ros is in the rock section where it belongs.)

Good shout. I've never given the World Music section much of a chance.

Cheers for the heads-up Briggins! I'm listening now.

Also, cheers to Gloaming who introduced me to Karkwa. I had seen their name on here but hadn't listened and he sent me a link.

Edit: I really like Ma Tete A Off by Marie-Pierre Arthur

By 'world' they're apparently thinking anything that isn't either English or extra popular. :dozey: If enough people have trouble finding it, maybe they'll switch it. But then I've never seen a Malajube album, so maybe even they are there too.

I liked the album a lot, and it's nice to hear music in a language I don't really understand :P I'll give it another listening later.

I should blame the canadian coldplayers for the big amount of canadian music on my ipod :uhoh:

Thanks Ian. :nice:

^There is somewhere from a long time ago. edit: http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19180

Yeah, Canada has been punching way above it's weight lately in terms of both quality and quantity. It's a nice change. This is our golden age, in a way.

I completely agree that this is the golden age of music in our country. I kind of felt like before there were just a handful of artists that were consistently putting out good music or that were well known. Now we have bands like Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Owen Pallett, Metric etc. getting world wide attention.

And then there are tonnes of other great artists that aren't getting as much attention outside of Canada like Karkwa, Hey Rosetta! and Shad just to name a few.

I'll certainly be looking into that thread.

I haven't used that thread in a while but will use it frequently if others are willing to discuss music :P

that's really funny how close you guys posted between each other

I still have yet to listen to the new album. I've heard a few songs and really love what I've heard so far. I emailed the band to see if/when they will release the new album in the US iTunes/amazon mp3 store... no response yet :(

:laugh3: I get the impression they're a little overwhelmed at the moment. As I understand it they currently still handle that stuff themselves and their English is really good, but not perfectly fluent.
