It's OK, Kelsey. You are being a world of help right now, and that's what I feel like I need right now. What you're sharing with me not only helps me understand what's going on with my dad, it also helps me help him.

I hope I can be a bit of help. It's all so new and scary and overwhelming, because it's not just about sugar control, diabetes wreaks havoc on the whole body, in many ways. And not controlled properly, affects so many other organs, and like Lore said, even the tiniest of cuts or wounds can become so serious FAST.(mostly in the feet, circulation can be bad there) and it takes forever for even like a zit to heal ! (:dozey:not that I ever get those....:uhoh2:) ;)

He is blessed to have you and your mum . He will be proud you are caring enough to learn about how this affects him.

 i hope everything is ok with ur dad now

my aunt has diabetes and she really has to take care of wht she eats

I hope everything its okey with your dad

My Mom has been a diabetic person for almost 35 years old now .. So I can pretty much say I have gotten used to it ..

She takes shots ( IDK actually how u say it .. She injects ? herself with insuline , 4 times a day ) ..

You also gotta take care of what you eat.. Of course You can not eat sweet things .. She avoids also eating pasta and things with flour ..

But anyway my mom is a very controlled person .. So she has never eaten anything outside her diet ..

Its really a horrible desease :( . I mean There are some gadgets and things you use to know your sugar level .. and when its too hot or you are too stressed you feel bad and dizzy and gotta eat something sweet .. IDK Im a mess with this .. never investigated too much.

In my moms case is sad , cause she has been a diabetic person pretty much all of her life , and sometimes you see her and it makes u sad that she cant eat those things .. Or she does birthday cakes and never tastes them .. Or she does dinner for my sis dad and I , and she makes herself other things :( . Or its really heartbreaking when IDK , something Diet (sugar free) comes out , and she gets sooo excited. For example , a new icecream coming out ( that its completely normal for us , but she hasnt tasted it) and you see her soo happy with something that is common for us .. Its horrible :(

It must be hard for your dad to adapt himself to a new diet at this point of his life though ..

Im sorry , this post is such a mess lol. So desorganized , but im way too tired to fix it up :) maybe in the morning :P

I visited my dad in the hospital again today after school, and I learned that he also has high blood pressure. He's taking meds for that, so not only can he not have sugar, he can't have salt, either. He also mentioned to me how he couldn't have starches (e.g. potatoes) or bread. On top of that, due to his weight, they've put him on a 1200 calorie diet. His diet is so incredibly restrictive, and it makes me sad.

Thankfully, he also spoke with a dietician today, so he'll have a better idea of what to do with what he can eat.

Phew, 1200 calorie diet? That's not a lot. :|

(Sorry for responding late, I thought I had posted already but I guess I hadn't. . .)

I'm sorry about your dad, but it's much better that they diagnosed him.

My grandfather has diabetes, but unfortunately he's the rebellious type. :| My grandma keeps him on a strict diet, but when she isn't there he'll sneak into the fridge and eat a slice of cake. :|

My dad is now back from the hospital and resting at home.

Kelsey, to answer your question from earlier, my dad is fortunate enough to not have to take insulin shots. He just has to take the pills.

One of my friends has Diabetes Incpidous which isn't the blood diabetes, but it's a form of water diabetes

I other words, her kidneys don't work properly and she's on about 20 pills a day

At the moment she's taking a week off college because her lungs are grinding on her rib cage and kidneys or something damn odd like that :anxious:

:) That's a blessing ! Glad to hear it. That may change , in time though, if it's not kept under control. Exercise is a big key, even just walking !

And I wanted to include that when the blood sugar gets high, flooding yourself with lots of water helps bring it down quickly.

And pick up a bottle of cinnamon capsules at the drugstore- it has been proven to help control blood sugar as well, so if he likes it, add it to anything ! ( oatmeal, muffins, tea, anything !)

I'll do my best to remember that. Thanks! :D

 Are you saying you are not taking notes ? :P:D

It's fine; I have an excellent memory. :nice:

Oh, and I was somewhat mistaken. He's been put on insulin shots twice a day until he's relatively regulated.

My 10 year old cousin was diagnosed right before Christmas. He has to monitor his blood sugar and insulin constantly, and has to watch everything he eats. He is also allergic to peanuts, so this has limited his choices even more.
