Do you feel awkward when you have to exchange something you bought?

Featured Replies

....and do you do it often?

I don't know.....I bought a shirt 2 weeks ago and after 2 days (I didn't wear it) I exchanged it, because I actually didn't like it....they gave me the money back.

Today I went to the same shop bought another shirt (since I went to some other shops, because I was hoping I'd find something there...but I didn't) and whilst I was going out of the shop (after I'd paid) I saw another shirt which was exactly what I was looking for (I didn't see it before...)...so yeah tomorrow I will have to go there again to exchange it again....:wacky:

well, I work in a shop myself and when people want to exchange something I usually don't mind

No, it doesn't bother me. Our customers do it all the time and I really don't mind.

I've been ridiculously busy with uni and work this year so I've ordered most of my stuff online. I'm actually more likely to return things if I ordered them online. I sometimes keep things that I bought in a shop because I can't be bothered to go to town and queue for ages.

I think it depends on the way you're doing it!

If customers are nice and respectful and don't treat me like shit I'm more understanding, too.

It's not their shirt (i mean it's not as if you ruin the salesperson personally with returning it) and returns are a regular thing so I wouldn't feel ashamed.

You don't do that to ruin them and you didn't buy it to wear it and then return it after using either.

I don't like shopping that much (with a few exceptions) so I don't return things often haha

I'd feel paranoid that they thought I had used it.

But I shouldn't really care.

It's retail.

Retail is not a thing I want to think about, ever.

We have to take stuff back that's been used IF our managers think the customer is trustworthy. A customer recently brought children's clothes back and I didn't wanna take it because it was blatantly obvious that the child had grown out of it (they said they bought it a week ago but they had lost their receipt and the clothes looked like they had been washed) but I had to take it anyway.

wow that's weird.....I mean our customers are allowed to exchange sheet music they bought (eventhough they could have copied the whole book), but if we think it's been used or it's been copied we don't take it back...but I guess there are different rules about sheet music and clothes

^WTF?! You can return things without a receipt now?

I'm going to a bunch of random shops with a bunch of old junk I don't use anymore and claim I bought it there, first stop is the butchers with a bunch of N64 games.

^HAHAHAH Treilly

I think it depends.....for example if there is still a sing on the book that they have bought it in our shop or if we can remember them buying it in our shop some days before we take it back

I feel kind of bad for admitting this

But a few years I had to attend a fancy event where the guest of honour was the Mayor of Toronto.

I didn't have any appropriate clothing for such an event - so I went and bought myself a nice dress.

I knew that I would not wear that dress anywhere else, so after the event I returned it :embarrassed:

Sorry I forgot to mention, it was an exchange.

They exchanged it for a bigger size because their child had grown out of it.

It was an exchange.

It's ridiculous if you ask me. If our managers think it hasn't been used (or happens to like the customer) we have to take it back no matter what.

ahh I see....well it is still kinda weird since it obviously has been used....our customers don't even get their money back when they return something

Do they get vouchers?

Ours get a full refund if they return it within 28 days.

yeah they do....which is the most annoying thing about it since every 2nd customers starts a discussion about it

I don't do it very often, but if I have to exchange (or return) something, I don't feel awkward.

Although I've worked on the other side of the counter (for a jewelry store), so I've seen lots of interesting 'reasons' for exchanges/returns. When I was working very part time, toward the end of one month I sold a dude a really expensive engagement ring (received commission that month), but then he returned it the next month (he cheated on the girl and so she called it off). And since I hadn't sold that much the next month, my net sales for the next month was negative, so... I actually had to pay commission back to the company in my paycheck. Nice.
