Are Coldplay kindof like a Cult?

Featured Replies

The 'englightened individual' comment was a joke of course, and this relates to the person who responded on the last page (coldplayisawesome), yes I do believe people genuinely like it as well, of course, I think the general consensus from reading into these replies is that few people don't make up for the majority. I have made a thread in the Paradise forum about hilarious or over the top responses from fans on youtube, and from going back to the Paradise youtube page I would say that a significant portion of posts appear to be from some idiot saying "This is Paradise!" or "I hit 'like' before I hit play :D".

This just shows 'blind idiocy' as Jenjie puts it, and before I mentioned that Coldplay right now are the only huge mainstream band (Consistently over a number of albums) with a strong fan base, so with millions of fans of course you're going to get some people acting like idiots and thinking that being THE BIGGEST Coldplay fan means being unobjective and you wear this medal with pride so you have to show the extremes as to how much you like Coldplay. But I don't remember this happening when, for example, Radiohead's last album coming out. I don't remember reading youtube comments and laughing at how stupid people are for just embracing something regardless of actually thinking it through.

In fact even the most positive initial responses weren't positive at all, at the best people were still trying to get into it, and I would say many people didn't end up getting it at all, it's not known among fans as their best work or anywhere near that really. But already I've seen so many comments that literally have said "THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER" or "Coldplays best song yet thumbs up!" and it's like, firstly, you can't seriously think that, secondly, even if you do, will you honestly still feel the same way next week?

Coldplay do have more fans then Radiohead, and you could say I'm biased being a RH fan, but I think online Coldplay fans are much more embarrassing then RH. It's possibly because they are more mainstream right now, if you really think about it RH haven't had a song that regularly circulates on music channels or radio since 1998, 'There There' is probably the closest since but its popularity can't be compared with pretty much all of Coldplay's singles in the last decade.

So what I'm saying is that it is probably inevitable when a band has a gigantic amount of fans, the ones who try to show just how big of a fan they are tend to stand out as pure morons, and they make Coldplay look like a "cult".

I'm not sure that the consensus response to these two songs is that they are bad. By the poll here (which admittedly is not exactly scientific) the 7-10's greatly outnumber the 1-3's. Even if you account for vote stuffing (which both sides can do) I'd say it's a fairly positive pole result. Likewise, the Youtube video for Paradise has a much higher like/dislike ratio than the videos for many older, arguably more beloved Coldplay Songs. It's pretty rare to find any video with the number of views it has with such a low dislike percentage (which I believe is currently right around 5%). EDIT: It's actually just a hair over 3%

As to people "over reacting" even if they do like it, I think this is normal as well. It's a new song which gives it a sheen that older songs may no longer have.

Of course the opinions of the songs have been very popular, I know that, I was talking about the embarrassing fans who write stupid mindless shit on youtube like "I hit like before it started" etc., the consensus in this thread is that those fans are in the minority.

As for people over-reacting being normal, I don't re-call anyone saying Codex is the greatest song of all time within hours of it being released. It's not normal, it's just pointless crap.

Maybe not. But I do remember people saying quite similar things about Speed of Sound when it first came out and now it's generally regarded as being in the middle range of CP's singles. When people wait for something a long time, a certain percentage do key themselves up to like it before they hear it.

Oh man, I'm getting frustrated now.

Yes so maybe it's normal for Coldplay, so you used the example Speed of Sound, but the point of the thread is how Coldplay are a cult, part of that being that some people love and accept any new stuff basically without even hearing it, so there's not much use comparing the reaction to this Coldplay song against, another Coldplay song. I used Radiohead as an example, I recall the fans overall being reasonable and subjective when they released their last album, not as many fans complained of it being totally shit but that's because it wasn't, but there was nobody instantly proclaiming it's greatness.

Oh fuck it nevermind.

ah, i see. i know that you did say in the first post that your post did not apply to all fans, but i was just wondering what your thoughts were on the other fans as well.

i am an older fan, and while i will admit that i don't exactly think their newer stuff is their best (though, for me, Moving to Mars is up there), i do really like what we've heard so far and i don't feel like i'm forcing myself to like it. :P

as for the rest of what you've said in this post... i think part of it stems from the fact that Coldplay are attracting a lot of younger fans now. not to be ageist or anything, but i have a feeling that the younger a person is, the more likely they are to blindly follow something.

I don't really have thoughts on the other fans, older or whatever, the threads just simply focusing on the insane ones who would love Coldplays new album if it was 8 hours of Chris making chimp noises, they are what makes them seem 'cult'. It's so hard to understand people who actually say things like "If you don't like it you aren't a real fan", that's just insane logic but its not uncommon among Coldplay fans.

...8 hours of Chris making chimp noises...

hey, don't give him ideas. :blank: :P

it does seem like that sort of argument is rather prevalent around here... part of me wonders if people aren't just saying those things for the attention, both on here and youtube.

Reilly I think its just 'Oh we're good people except for some of us who are just crazy" And that can be applied to anything not just bands.

You don't think there are some Radiohead fans that would praise an album of Thom Yorke making chimp noises?
