Coldplay dedicate Fix You to Norwich dad’s son

A Norwich dad has spoken of how Coldplay dedicated one of their songs to his son who died aged just eight days old.

Carl Lake, pictured, and his wife Samantha lost Jordan 12 years ago after he was born prematurely.

Ahead of Coldplay’s gig at the University of East Anglia on Thursday, Mr Lake spotted the band’s drummer Will Champion outside the union building.

The self-employed taxi driver from Heartsease asked if the band would dedicate their chart-topping hit Fix You to their son. And to his surprise, Coldplay, named best act in the world today at the Q awards, paid tribute to the family.

Mr Lake, 29, who lives in Sale Road with his wife and two children Bethanie and Ashlee, said: “They sang a bit of Amy Winehouse’s Rehab before they sang Fix You and Chris Martin said ‘this song is for Jordan’ and at the end of the song he said it was for ‘Carl, Samantha and Jordan’.

“I had explained to Coldplay’s drummer how if Fix You was around when Jordan died then we would’ve played it at the funeral – when we first heard Fix You, we thought it was amazing.”

Colplay’s sell-out concert at the UEA, their first in Norwich for more than a decade, was held in conjunction with BBC Radio 1. The band flew into Norwich from Madrid and performed earlier in the day to 100 people as part of Radio 1’s student tour.

The main concert in the evening, which was aired live on DJ Zane Lowe’s radio show, saw them play songs from their new album Mylo Xyloto as well as all-time favourites such as The Scientist, Clocks and Yellow.

Mr Lake queued for 36 hours to get tickets to see Coldplay. He said the band’s tribute to his son was “extra special” as this week is Jordan’s memorial week. Jordan was born on October 25, 1999, at just 24 weeks.

He died eight days later on November 3, 1999.

“The gig was absolutely amazing and with them dedicating Fix You to Jordan, it just topped it all off – it was definitely worth queuing for,” said Mr Lake.

“I’m really chuffed that I asked them to do it. We were in shock – I was with my dad, wife and mother-in-law and we were all in tears.”

wow... that is so amazing that they would do that for someone! this is one of the reasons why Coldplay are such a great band, they care so much about their fans :)

That's beautifully heartbreaking :(

This. This is why I love Coldplay.

Absolutely this!

I read it, and thought:D I read this already, good read, but thanks for adding the other link, cause I would have gone crazy wondering  "Where did I read that?"
