Well, I think animals that it's awful to abuse or unpurposefully kill one, but I think that the people are just trying to make people not watch the Hobbit. They are probably making a bigger deal than they should.

Maybe they could have, but this happened a while ago and they just released this story a short while ago. And even if they could be prevented, they probably didn't want to have those animals die.

But the LoTR trilogy was is timeless, and I'm sure these will be as well.
