Homelessness

Featured Replies

I was just thinking about this. In our city, like the majority of other cities there is a problem with homelessness. But there are charities and organisations set up to provide them with some sort of shelter during the day, a free dinner, cheap coffee, etc. Of course my city is kind of small, so of course that would be a factor.

(this will sound terrible, but I am only really thinking about the people who I consider to be genuinely homeless.... there have been a fair number of fake homeless people here )

I was watching that video where the guy was handing out the A&F clothing to the homeless people. I was so shocked at the amount of homeless people and how they had their set ups :uhoh: There was just huge numbers of them in one spot. Is there not a place they can go during the day so they feel safe? D;

This video is worth a watch also.

I'm supposed to work with my professor this summer on this issue. It scares me a little. I haven't had any experience with them. I'd like to be homeless for while, I think it would be kinda cool to become a tramp and go across the states.

I've seen lots of homeless people. The hard thing is, (at least in Mongolia), any money you give them is probably gonna go towards alcohol instead of food or clothing, and therefore, not help them very much.

Lots of homeless people would look through the garbage outside our apartment building. They were usually looking for bottles that could be recycled, to get a bit of money for them.

I don't know what lots of these people would do in the winter time. It get's really cold in Mongolia. -40° was quite normal...

There are also lots of people who fake being homeless. One guy, for the entire 12 years we were in Mongolia, had a sign that said his ger (yert-like tent) had just burnt down, and he needs money.

So it would be nice to try to help them, but it's hard to always know how.

Not just in Mongolia, this is a thing everywhere.

When I was younger and I walked around the city with my family they told me to always go and buy some food from a store instead of giving beggars money because you never know if the money can be used to support some sort of addiction or something. As far as I can remember they always accepted the food so I guess it's a good idea.

I've heard of fake homeless people on the news, I don't think I've ever seen one but I guess my family's been aware of it lately and has been giving change to people a lot less.

I feel so bad when my mom or sister walks past someone asking for money but at the same time my feelings are twice as negative towards someone who would lie about being homeless like that. It's a very complicated thing.

I'm not sure how cool and likeable it would be if you couldn't find food on some days etc.

Unless you mean just wandering around with plenty of money on you to spend on these things?

That would be part of the experience. I would enjoy it overall, the experience to see what it's like. Not saying everyday would be great.

I was more speaking of enforced homelessness, rather than choosing to drift for a little while.

But I do understand what you mean. I just think you are romanticising it far too much.
