Coldplay just released Atlas, and being the first of the few to have a listen since it's release, let's start the review straight away.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh3TokLzzmw]Atlas (from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack) (... - YouTube[/ame]

So Atlas is apparently the first track to be released from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack, undoubtedly one of the fan favorite movies go-to this fall when it hits theaters November 22. That's not the notion, but rather the ethic which has comprised and was built into Atlas, that Coldplay has done has left me swooning over their ability once again. Let's start with the beginning.

Atlas opens up to soothing piano plays before Martin, the lead singer, says it slowly yet tensely, 'Some saw the sun; Some saw the smoke; Some heard the gun; Some bent the bow,' it all slowly forthcoming yet being intricate, and somewhat also reminiscent of old Coldplay days (before Mylo Xyloto to be exact). The track then sets up for it's mighty big leap of faith; the chorus which is destined to hit the peak all fans are expecting. And before it reaches there, Martin expresses 'caught in the fire; Say 'oh'; We're about; To explode.' Before the epic snare drum sound eclipses it and the vocals soar, going 'Carry your world; I'll carry your world,' before doing a refrain twice, and going on with the song. I felt this was a good way to picture the scenario when you first listen to the song. There were some issues, but it was all confined under one space: the chorus.

So Coldplay are known for some of the best catchy hooks in their entire career. I'm not saying that this chorus in Atlas wasn't catchy, but while Martin's voice is memorable, I had wished the chorus to be of something more. It wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be, considered the amount of work being laid before it's pavement stockpiled into this abrupt yet sudden change of tone. It was big, yes, but it was tense and felt like it wasn't enough. Lyrically, it possess it's strength well and holds it down over the song. But the chorus to me, was the biggest letdown in my opinion. Not only was it not sufficient, while it was strong, it did not prove anything that the verse could not do on it's own. Other than that, the piano, drums and vocals all worked for me. But slight adjustments to it could've been far, far better done, and Atlas would've been one of the best week-ending singles you'll hear yet.

Don't hold that thought down though, as Atlas jaunts you on a journey, especially during the verses. If you listen hard enough, you might get some lyrical tidbits that you'd never expect, coming off The Hunger Game's sophomore movie due November.

Some far away

Some search for gold

Some dragon to slay

Heaven we hope

Is just up the road

Ratings:

Originality: 8/10 - Coldplay has an amazing agglomeration of classics, and Atlas might sit up on the porch alongsides Viva La Vida and even Lost!.

Sound: 7/10 - Despite the flaws bridging in to the overall side of the song from the chorus, it still holds it's place simply well.

Lyrics: 9/10 - It's really metaphorical and should take some time to understand and delve into further.

Overall: 24/30 - Atlas is jarringly good. While the chorus may seem to disappoint in my favor, give it a few more listens. It will grow on you. It's tense yet soothing; undeniably rich in depth and rewarding if you stayed until the end. It's ultimately a re-collective soul-searching experience the song provides. I will be playing it for days - Coldplay is one of my favorite UK bands anyway! Be sure to catch Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games' sequel on November 22 and mark that date down on your calendar.

Coldplay Drop First Song in Two Years for 'Hunger Games' Soundtrack

Tender piano ballad "Atlas" is off the 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' soundtrack, out in November

In the two years since the release of Coldplay's chart-dominating 2011 LP Mylo Xyloto, frontman Chris Martin has remained fairly quiet; he popped up in the Hamptons to support his wifey, Gwyneth Paltrow, as she highjacked a literary event to promoted her new cook book; he hit a Manchester United vs. Arsenal football (cough, soccer) match in London with his mate Jay Z and is even rumored to be recording for U2's new LP. But now Martin and his band are back to work, releasing their first new material in two years with "Atlas," featured on the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Watch and listen above.

The track opens, like many a Coldplay song, with tender, spare piano tinkles and Martin's crooning. Soon, ethereal synth washes enter (did Brian Eno produce "Atlas," like the band's last few LPs?) and on a brief lull, when Martin whispers the word "explode," drums enter, colorful guitar riffs (think Phish filtered through Tron) noodle into the atmosphere. The piano rises and Martin wails: "Carry your world / Carry your world / Carry your world!!!"

It's a welcome return and hopefully signals the beginning of another album. After all, history says the Brit soft-rockers drop an LP every three years—better get cracking, lads, 2014 is just around the corner.

COLDPLAY PREMIERE 'THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE' SONG 'ATLAS' LYRIC VIDEO - WATCH

IT'S JUST WORDS. BUT IN A BEAUTIFUL WAY.

Ever since we found out Coldplay were recording the official tune for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, we've been counting down the days until it got itself out there to fully penetrate our eardrums. And finally the day is upon us, 'cause Chris Martin have officially debuted Atlas in the form of one of those snazzy lyric videos that are a bit pointless but don't seem to be going anywhere just yet.

As you can imagine it's all very epic, wizzy, whirly and words to that effect. Hoorah.

coldplayatlas.jpg

Now obviously the film isn't out in the UK until November 11th (hurry the frick up, gah), but that hasn't stopped the band treating us to the track a bit early, which is nice. The piano-led tune includes talk of slaying dragons, carrying the world and searching for gold. As you do.

Basically it's very good and you can check out the very purple lyric video below.

Good, innit?

Coldplay Return With Expansive 'Atlas' From 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

London pop-rock kings follow up 'Mylo Xyloto' with contemplative ballad

Coldplay have shared their first new song since 2011's Mylo Xyloto. As Consequence of Sound points out, this is also the London band's first original song for a film soundtrack, arriving in support of November 22's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Fittingly expansive "Atlas" finds Chris Martin cooing at the cosmos over a celestial backing of twinkling piano keys and creeping atmosphere. While the song does bust wide open around the two-and-a-half-minute mark, the shifts in mood are due mostly to the rock-solid vocal performance. It's MOR music, to be sure, but Coldplay imbue it with a certain heartfelt bigness that isn't to be overlooked. And the themes are just as large, of course. Appropos to all of it, the lyric video for "Atlas," seen above, revolves around galactic imagery, evoking constellations and the idea of a watchful eye in the sky as the song echoes forth.

Coldplay Debut “Atlas” From ‘The Hunger Games — Catching Fire’ Soundtrack

Coldplay‘s ”Atlas,” their contribution to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, has premiered today via lyric video (even though the lads already posted a photo of the lyrics last month). It’s a rather subdued offering, built on front man Chris Martin‘s delicate piano chords and some twinkling atmospherics. The song does eventually offer a burst of anthemic beauty, but on the whole it’s a vanilla offering — even for the kings of vanilla rock.

REVIEW: Coldplay 'Atlas' from 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Soundtrack Released

Coldplay first announced that they would contribute an original song "Atlas" for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" soundtrack in August. After a month of anticipation, the new song from the "Paradise" band has finally been released. A lyric video for "Atlas" debuted on YouTube today (Sept. 6).

Fitting for the journey-driven "Catching Fire," which follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) through their victory tour across Panem and then into the Hunger Games Quarter Quell, "Atlas" is about finding inner strength and fighting your demons, lyrically.

"Carry your world / I'll carry your world," lead singer Chris Martin croons in the song's emotional chorus.

Musically, "Atlas" reflects the simplicity of older Coldplay material. Though epic in its own way, "Atlas" lacks the bombastic levels of recent singles "Viva La Vida" or "Every Teardrop is A Waterfall." Instead, the piano instrumentation and Martin's vocals are allowed to shine, bringing back memories of "Parachutes" and "A Rush Of Blood to the Head" era Coldplay.

The track marks the first time the Grammy-winning band has recorded an original song for film. And in signature style, they've delivered a single that is soaring yet melancholy, which pretty perfectly captures heroine Katniss Everdeen's standing by the end of this second installment.

COLDPLAY'S NEW SONG 'ATLAS' FOR 'CATCHING FIRE' SOUNDTRACK IS A PERFECT FIT

As if we weren't already excited enough for Catching Fire, the upcoming second installment in The Hunger Games trilogy, "Atlas," a new song just released by Coldplay for the movie's soundtrack, got us counting down the days until the film's November release. The track, released on Sept. 6, was specifically recorded for Catching Fire by Chris Martin. and Co., and it's haunting, eerie, and beautiful — in other words, exactly what you'd want for the soundtrack to a Hunger Games adaptation.

"Atlas," dark and piano-based, is reminiscent of early Coldplay songs like "Green Eyes" or "Amsterdam." With lyrics like "some bent the bow, sometimes the wire must tense for the note" and "caught in the fire, say oh, we're about to explode," the song is perfect for Catching Fire. It's easy to imagine it playing over some of scenes in the arena, when Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is faced with difficult, possibly deadly decisions.

The music video for the song is simple, but effective; the lyrics appear over a background of abstract, psychedelic shapes and figures, culminating with an image of the series' famous mockingjay pin.

Last month, Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence revealed that Coldplay was releasing a song for the soundtrack, saying that he was "thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film."

He continued, "Their unwavering passion and excitement for the project elevated the collaboration even further, and we can't wait to share this music with audiences around the world."

"Atlas" doesn't disappoint. Its main message of protection, shown in lyrics like "I'll carry your world and all your hurt," is right in line with Catching Fire's themes. If the song feels this moving now, we can only imagine how poignant it's going to be when it plays during some of the film's most powerful scenes.

Coldplay released a bleak new song for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be in theaters in just a couple of months, and that means it’s time for more and more details about the film to come slowly creeping out. Fans have already seen promo pics, fashion lines, and cosmetics partnerships, and now, via a new Coldplay single, they’re getting a look at the movie’s soundtrack. “Atlas” is, as anyone who’s read the books or seen the first Hunger Games might expect, equal parts bleak, sad, and hopeless, with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin crooning lines about how he’ll “carry your world,” and about how there’s usually “some dragon to slay.” Compelling stuff, man.

Coldplay Heads To 'Hunger Games' on 'Atlas' Single

Coldplay has returned from their post-"Mylo Xyloto" respite with "Atlas," the first single from the soundtrack to "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." The song's lyric video launched online on Friday (Sept. 6) and captures the sweeping grandeur of the piano-driven track.

Chris Martin and co. wrote "Atlas" specifically for "Catching Fire," and the lyrics abstractly touch upon main characters Katniss and Peeta's mutual reliance. "Carry your world/I'll carry your world," Martin croons as the piano and guitars congeal for a weighty conclusion.

"Atlas," which was recorded in London produced by Coldplay with Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, is currently available on iTunes, and will be featured in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" film when it hits theaters on Nov. 22. The song is Coldplay's first new track in almost two years, as their previous full-length, "Mylo Xyloto," was released in October 2011.

Coldplay Reveals New Song 'Atlas' from 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Soundtrack

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" won't debut in theaters until November 22, but an original song from the film's soundtrack has been released. Coldplay released the single "Atlas" on Friday, with an accompanying lyric video.

The song itself won't be too shocking for Coldplay fans, opening with Chris Martin's quiet vocals and a quiet piano. Drums and guitars join in as the song picks up momentum throughout later verses. The title is actually a reference to Martin's repeated line "I'll carry your world." The format is more comparable to the band's work on "A Rush of Blood To The Head" than the more grandiose offerings on 2011's "Mylo Xyloto."

Although "atlas" refers more to Earth (at least in book form), the lyric video is a very astronomy-based affair. It opens with a series of shooting stars flying through space and coming into contact with a number of constellations. The Eros constellation shoots a number of arrows, which take the place of the stars. As the track builds up, so does the action, culminating in a supernova-style blast.

The soundtrack for the first "Hunger Games" film debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 during 2012. The album included new single "Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars, along with tracks from Kid Cudi, Neko Case, The Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Maroon 5, Miranda Lambert and The Pistol Annies, among others (included "among others" were several other tracks from Swift and the Civil Wars).

So far "Atlas" has been the only song announced from the film, but fans can expect a similarly talent-loaded soundtrack when the tracklist is officially announced.

Coldplay fans shouldn't necessarily take this as sign of a new album in the works. Still, it's promising news after the band announced during its tour in Australia last year that it would be going on an extended hiatus.

The latest is the release of Coldplay's original "Catching Fire" soundtrack single, "Atlas." The song is a flowing, melancholy mid-tempo tune which is pretty much perfect for Katniss Everdeen's heroic post-apocalyptic tale. In other words, the song is very "Coldplay".

Coldplay's 'Atlas' from 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

“Atlas,” Coldplay’s new song for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” finally surfaced today after a two-week delay.

While instantly recognizably Coldplay, with Chris Martin’s delicate piano playing at the forefront, it’s also much less bombastic than some typical Coldplay fare. Instead, it’s quietly dramatic, as Martin vows “I’ll carry your world” with a growing intensity. There’s something lovely and haunting about it, though it doesn’t immediately grab hold like “Safe & Sound” from Taylor Swift & The Civil Wars from the first “Hunger Games” installment did.

Coldplay wrote the track, the band’s first new song in nearly two years, specifically for the movie. Coldplay recorded the song, produced by the band, Daniel Green and Rik Sampson, in its London studio, Beehive between April and July.

Coldplay Return With 'Atlas'

Song is from 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' soundtrack

Coldplay have returned today with "Atlas," their new song from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. The dreamy tune features a classic Coldplay presentation, with twinkling piano that builds as Chris Martin croons "I'll carry your world." The song arrives with a video that follows a shooting star coursing through the universe while tracing various constellations in the zodiac to the point of supernova.

Last November, Coldplay hinted that the band would be going on a three-year hiatus. "This is the last big show for three years or so," Chris Martin told an Australian crowd on their last tour stop. The band has kept its word, with "Atlas" being the only thing heard from the British band since then.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theaters on November 22nd.

Listen to 'Atlas,' Coldplay's single for the new 'Hunger Games' film

Coldplay is back -- and it feels awfully lukewarm.

The English band on Friday released "Atlas," its contribution to the latest "Hunger Games" film, "Catching Fire," which is set to hit theaters Nov. 22. It's the group's first new music since 2011's "Mylo Xyloto" album and, according to a statement, marks the first time Coldplay has recorded an original song for a movie.

But if that description primes you for something pretty exciting -- not an unreasonable reaction, in spite of what millions of Coldplay haters might say -- "Atlas" doesn't really deliver.

Recorded, we're told, in London between April and July, the piano-based tune sounds more like a tossed-off remnant from the outfit's early days, before it began experimenting with deep rhythms and vivid textures on "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" in 2008.

It won't turn off anyone, but that's kind of the problem: Where "Mylo Xyloto" gave the impression that Chris Martin and his bandmates were indulging all of their wacky ideas -- including a previously unhinted-at love of old-school rave synths -- "Atlas" merely does what you expect it to do. It needs a serious infusion of Jennifer Lawrence.

Review: Atlas by Coldplay (Lyric Video)

The music video sees a beautiful visual display of stars and pictures, which links closely with the song’s theme of the world – particularly when it concerns the title – Atlas.

The song sees a very rhythmic, calm and relaxing introduction on the piano. The vocals are quieter, which is different to the mood of Coldplay’s previous album, Mylo Xyloto, but it still sets the mood relevant to the story of Catching Fire (very dark, dramatic and suspense-filled). I can also imagine the song being featured in the movie for the same reasons.

This is also shown in the lyrics too, which also have references to key plot parts in the movie (which I won’t go into because of spoilers!).

However, despite saying previously that the song was quiet, there are points where the song becomes very strong and meaningful. This is present when drums appear in Verse 2 and when there is the musical interlude near the end.

Overall the song is a triumph, and I can’t wait for its release. I think it’s a perfect song for the movie.

Coldplay unveils their new single “Atlas”

It is fair to say that Coldplay‘s last album “Mylo Xyloto” (released in October 2011) was not the artistic milestone they expected it to be and it probably did not win them any new fans either. Maybe being featured on soundtrack is the answer to a turnaround for Coldplay. Their new single “Atlas” surfaced today. It is being featured on the “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack.

The down-tempo “Atlas” suffers from the syndrome of almost being a great track but is not quite there. The verses feature a delicate piano refrain with sparse production thus predominately showcasing Chris Martin’s vocals. The tune of the verses are very generic and unmemorable but the chorus is where things go right for the song. In contrast to the verses, the chorus benefits from a richly layered production and soaring vocals (reminiscent of Martin’s vocal style on a track called “Moses” – featured on a live Coldplay album from 8 years ago) by Chris Martin. It has an almost anthemic quality and the vocal delivery on the repeating lines “Carry your world” have a magnetic quality. The song’s most beautiful part is its “outro” – a portion of the song that seems to have almost disappeared from the standard pop template. It features a sonic flirtation between the keyboards and an electric guitar – with Martin’s vocals occasionally drifting over that interaction.

In a nutshell, “Atlas” benefits from its moments of epic brilliance which are sadly diluted by the lackluster verses. It will most likely be at least a moderate hit for Coldplay if not a major hit. Being on the soundtrack of a high-profile movie most certainly helps.

Coldplay - Atlas

The Hunger Games is one of the most exciting new film series since Harry Potter. Following Suzanne Collins' gripping novels, the second film in the series (Catching Fire) is hyped to set the world alight on its release later in the autumn.

So why have the producers chosen to feature one of the most boring bands on the soundtrack?

There might be some nice harmonies in the chorus, but for the most part this is a yawn-inducing piano ballad with Chris Martin groaning his way through on auto-pilot sounding more bored than we are. The first film's soundtrack included the likes of Arcade Fire, Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars for an American, country-folk feel. Now, the bigger budget has led to a bigger band in it for the money alone. The melancholy sound might fit with the bleak outlook of the narrative, but the film deserves better music than this.

Still, the graphics in the lyric video are nice.

2/5

Coldplay – “Atlas” from Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack

Fresh off the Catching Fire soundtrack, here’s a charmingly eerie, gorgeously minimalist new jam from Coldplay that’s not a Battles cover (we wish!), “Atlas.” A simple, often-discordant piano line takes center stage then hides behind massive, swelling strings building to a massive sunrise of a sound, all of it accompanied by Chris Martin’s musings on the Atlas of Greek mythology, who supported the world on his shoulders. We can’t wait to see where this song’ll fit in the movie – it’d make a great end credits soundtrack. You’ll have no trouble putting it on repeat in the meantime.
