Does Coldplay’s New Catching Fire Single “Atlas” Sound Like Their Old Stuff?

Coldplay is back! They may have hinted last year that they were taking a three year break, but the band just released a lyric video for their brand new single from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. The track is called “Atlas,” and to be totally honest, it sounds less like more recent Coldplay tracks and more like a throwback to their sound on A Rush of Blood To The Head.

“Atlas” is set to be the first single from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. The song features a moody, haunting melody that builds to a bolder chorus and is reminiscent of older Coldplay tracks like “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face,” “Amsterdam” and “A Rush Of Blood To The Head,” which were all tracks on their 2002 critical and commercial hit LP, A Rush Of Blood To The Head. Those were also tracks that we loved.

The big difference between those tracks and this one? This one was written in 2013 and marks the first time Coldplay wrote and recorded an original song for a film soundtrack.

Coldplay isn’t the only band recreating older sounds in new songs. Paul McCartney‘s new track, “New,” sounds a lot like a Beatles track and not many people seem to mind.

All New Coldplay Song For Hunger Games Soundtrack

It has been two years since we have heard anything new from Coldplay. Last week the band released a video for a song that will appear in the new Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire. “Atlas” was written specifically for the movie and weaves the story of Katniss, her bow and arrow, and the Hunger Games. It is the first song confirmed on the official Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack. No other artists have been announced yet.

The video is a visual delight that reminds me of a super high tech screen saver. The words of the song dance across the screen and we sweep through various constellations chasing a star, an arrow, words. It’s familiar Coldplay with a similar building melody of the band’s beautifully done 2002 “Clocks“.

Coldplay Release New Lyric Video for Song “Atlas” from Hunger Games: Catching Fire

He’s got the whole world in his hands. He, being “Atlas,” the OG world-lifter and subject of Coldplay’s very first soundtrack original and first new song in nearly two years. It’s a twinkling, twisting, metaphysical gumbo.

This is all part of the windup to the second installment in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which comes to theaters November 22. So, in a way, the London megaband’s titanic “Atlas,” which floats Christian rock rhetoric atop Greek mythos and that classic, noodly Coldplay piano, bends its knee to the marketing gods while basking in their eternal, merchandising glory. Still, Chris Martin’s raspy murmur is quite nearly pornographic (spoiler alert: “he’s about to explode”), and the reverberating golden ratio buildup to 2:30 (complete with fireworks) gives the track some serious gravitas.

Rock it Out! Blog and The Needle Drop unite to review Coldplay’s “Atlas”

Yesterday Coldplay released their new single, “Atlas”, which appears on the soundtrack for the upcoming movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Not only does this mark the first new song from Coldplay since 2011 but it’s also their first original song written for a soundtrack. On this very special episode of Rock it Out! Blog, Sami and Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop offer their two cents on track and discuss where it stands among all of Coldplay’s previous releases.

The negative reviews have been pretty fair as well (apart from that one hugely sarcastic one from AV club)

AVClub is a really well-written site, but ugh, why bother reviewing a Coldplay song if ALL of the staffers on AVClub and ALL of the readers hate Coldplay. It's just their thing. It's snark for snark's sake.

Coldplay's Release New Song 'Atlas' Off The 'Hunger Games' Soundtrack

Coldplay's new song "Atlas" which comes off of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack is a pulsating ballad that hearkens back to the band's X&Y days.

On the tension-filled track, Chris Martins sings about carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, not unlike the Greek titan the song is named after.

Last month, Coldplay posted a photo of the handwritten lyrics of the song on their website. Very fittingly they sing about being "caught in the fire." But being the sweet and sensitive band they are, the song also has lyrics like: "I'll carry your world…and all your hurt."

This is the first song Coldplay has ever written specifically for a motion picture. It's also the band's first new song since releasing their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto in 2011.

Coldplay: 'Atlas'

We'll be honest; we weren't especially taken with Coldplay's new song on first listen. However, the track - which features on the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie/soundtrack - quickly grows on the ears; the result a sweeping piano ballad that reminds us (we're just going to say it) of Duran Duran's 'Ordinary World'.

Coldplay - 'Atlas'

Surprisingly the first time that Coldplay have written a song specifically for a film, 'Atlas' begins life as a delicate Parachutes-esque piano ballad before building up into a beautifully atmospheric slice of shimmering indie-rock which perfectly matches the epic scope of eagerly-awaited sequel 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.'

Listen to Coldplay's 'Atlas' from 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

Just because we’re knee-deep in festival season doesn’t mean the rest of the year is devoid of blockbusters. The highly-anticipated sequel “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is a little more than two months away and the first single from the film’s soundtrack has arrived online (via Rope of Silicon) for your viewing pleasure.

The first film’s soundtrack was notable for having legendary producer T-Bone Burnett at the helm with contributions from heavy hitters like Arcade Fire and Taylor Swift. While details for the second film’s soundtrack have been scarce—a release date for the album hasn’t even been set yet—Coldplay has dropped their sonic contribution to the film, a slow ballad of a song called “Atlas.”

As for the song itself, it's classic Coldplay—twinkly piano, breathy vocals by Chris Martin, and a chorus-type thing with Martin singing, inspirationally, "Carry a wooooooooorld." They seem to have taken a step back from their neon-lit, more heavily textured Mylo Xyloto stuff and back to the swoony things that high schoolers make out to at prom. Which is fine. It just doesn't scream "little kids locked in barbaric gladiatorial combat" to us.

Coldplay leads The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack with the scintillating Atlas, the group's first new music in nearly two years. Using a flickering piano part and subtle crescendos, Chris Martin's melody captures the tension of an idea just before it breaks loose and spreads everywhere at once.

COLDPLAY RELEASE “ATLAS” SINGLE FOR “THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE”

The fact that Coldplay is in the midst of a three-year hiatus apparently does not mean that they can’t come out of hibernation to record an epic song. That’s exactly what Chris Martin and crew have done, releasing the single “Atlas” for the soundtrack of upcoming film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Since its release five days ago, the lyric video for “Atlas” has garnered nearly 3.5 million YouTube views, and according to the band’s Facebook page, has hit No. 1 on iTunes in 41 countries. With its signature clockwork piano riffs and spacey atmospherics (with Martin’s melancholy vocals proclaiming “I’ll carry your world,” it’s easy to see why. This is the first new music we’ve heard from Coldplay in nearly two years, yet apparently the band’s popularity has not waned during their break. Not only is the single certain to generate even more interest in the film (although it scarcely needs the promotion), but the song itself could very well stand the test of time as one of Coldplay’s best hits.

I was immediately taken in by the first few notes of the song. Take a listen for yourself and see what you think. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is due in theaters on November 22.
