musiclover
Hi! I'm listening to Beethoven's 9th Symphony right now. It came in at #1 (of course!) in our classical music radion station count-down for the New Years Day. Do ya'll have any other monumental works in mind that go with celebrating something new, or something wonderful? Beethoven's "Consecration of the House" overture is also marvelous. So is his "Fantasia for piano, orchestra, and chorus" along with his Fifth and Sixth symphonies, and his "Emperor" piano Concerto. I also like William Tell overture of Rossini. Are there such huge anthems in the 'modern' rock music? *wondering* elighten me with your thoughs!

fifi
I like classical music! my mam is really into it for relaxation and stuff so yep sometimes I listen to it with her :)
musiclover
yeahh....that's how most people seem to listen to it now...as 'background' or 'elevator' music, not for actually listening to it, but as something to make you feel at ease or something like that. i do it sometimes too. but many times, i actually get engrossed in it. i get very emotional listening to some pieces, at times. specially some of the greatest music or some grand aria. that reminds me of the Grand March from Aida! funny thing is, people going to opera would think i'm nuts...not a lot of people who look like me wud like such music!

el_scorcho
I feel kinda bad saying it but classical music doesn't move me at all, I find I usually need a good hard beat and great lyrics in a song. It is nice though for relaxing. :)
musiclover
 try relaxing to Beethoven's Battle Symphony. Or The Ride of Valkyries by Wagner. Or 1812 Overture. Some good hard beats to those three! :stunned: You want great lyrics? listen to "O Fortuna!" it's pounding, man!
el_scorcho
Ehhhh I've yet to hear a classical piece that I would want to listen to again. :dozey:
musiclover
too bad. i'm not trying to stuff classical music down people's throats. just wanted to know what you'd have played when Berlin Wall fell. or when some great leader passed away. or right after 9/11. etc. is there some such lofty, great music in the 'modern' rock repertoire? Gas_Man
hey...i took piano lessons for a few years as a small child from my Gran...and i know quite a few classical music.....although, i have to say, alot of it is hyped up (that's just what i think) ...like...is much easier to compose than people think..but, ANYWAY... there's alot of classical music i like: Chopin has alot of good songs - Etude in C Minor (Revolutionary) is amazingly well written i think.. and Ravel..(did anyone see the Ravel programme, on BBC Four..(channel 116) with the three people playing his music..., that was one of my favourite 'gigs' lol, ever ;)

I'm not trying to down on classical music or anything, I'm just saying that I don't listen to it because I prefer different types of music. It is nice music of course, it just doesn't move me the way other music does. :)
musiclover
oh! they had an all-French night yesterday at the Lincoln Center in NYC...one of the premier venues for classical music in the U.S. they played Ravel. L'Arlessian Suite. a few other things. in half-hour, we'll have the New Years' Day concert from Musikverein, in Vienna Austria....all-Strauss concert of waltz music! It's a great tradition, this New Years' Day concert... :-)

GUY IS A SLUT
i think musiclove mentioned all of the important classical pieces. i love listening to the classical station but i don't know the names and composers of many of the pieces. i have a rossini cd and a few other classical cds but i prefer to listen to it on the radio :)
musiclover
oh that's cool! :-0) and yep, i did mention some really great ones off the top of my head. but that's hardly 'all'... i mean, i didn't even list any of Mozart's! i think everyone should have at least the 'best of' classical music CDs...which would only be a few, i promise! hehe
rf_ucsd
I would opine that pop music doesn't evolve the same way classical music does. From the little I know of classical music, it can be classified in terms of "breakthroughs." Pop music has not been like that. It seems to be a slow, constant evolution from African rhythms to American Blues to Jazz to Rhythm and Blues from which we now have a ton of offshoots, be it mainstream pop, rock, country, gospel, etc. Just my view. People talk about Chuck Berry being a hugh breakthrough for moden music. I can't speak to that. Pretty much pre-Beatles I'm a retard.
StupidIntel
Well, I'm not real big on classical music, but i do have a Beethoven cd that i love... it's fun trying to play along to Fur Elise (even though i'm not so good at it).

Sternly
For me Classical Music & Opera, along with Jazz, are like heaven! Though theoretically I know about Jazz, well quite a bit, but I don't know much about names and suchs. Well at least I can search for info and buy some cd's, but I think there's nothing worst than buying an Opera cd; watching it it's so much better! .... coming back to Classical Music, I love Chopin & Liszt. Beethoven was an excelent Pianist and so was Mozart [though he was not a Pianist] but the fisrt 2 just 'blow me away' I love Chopin's Etude Op.10 No.12 (Revolutionary), Ballade No.3 Op.47.mp3, Raindrop [ I can[t remember wich Op. & No. it is] and, well I just love his work and Liszt Etude#3 La Campanella. [which is very famous] it's one of the things I must listen everyday. I played, well stll play a bit, and received 'Classical instruction' so...... :dozey:
Rain
I LOVE Jazz  . I had to download a jazzy version of Aude Lang Syne for New Years. and i have a whole playlist of Jazz Christmas music. The only classical music I really like are either the really sad kind (like the piano solo in "Clubbed to Death") or Cannon in D by Johann Pachelbell. I know those two are like opposites but i like them both :sweatdrop:
musiclover
This is so wonderful! :-) it's great to see who likes classical music and stuff like that! :o) I knew--somehow--that Sternly would like classical! :sneaky: classical music is good for your brains...and she asks so many nerdy questions! (just kidding!) it's really cool for those who like it. that means i share something personal with ya'll!
