Brown spots appear when the cells in our skin that produce colour (aka melanin) are so damaged by the sun that they start reproducing and growing abnormally, causing spotty and dark discolouration. On the other hand, white spots appear when these cells completely lose pigment and no longer produce any melanin. It's totally different from vitiligo, which Michael Jackson had.
