The Breakfast Club

Featured Replies

Two weeks ago, while home working, I put on The Neverending Story and posted whlie it was on. I still think that's one of the more underrated movies ever, but there are some many threads I can devote to it.

But another incredibly underrated movie is The Breakfast Club. It was very popular when it came out, but over time it's been forgotten, mostly because nobody from its ensemble cast has been able to capitalize on their talent. But that's shouldn't cloud our view of John Hughes's best movie, so ...

I'm going to go find my tape and put it on and we can get going.

Who like this movie?

So the first thing to talk about is ...

if you're a guy, are you an Ally Sheedy or Molly Ringwald guy?

if you're a girl, are you a Jud Nelson or Emilio Estevez girl?

(my movie is rewinding)

OK ... so that Simply Minds song is actually the opening and closing song to the movie. Fifi was mentioning how she saw this on a movie channel. A lot of people forget/don't remember/never knew that this movie really brought a lot of the "modern rock" bands into focus. That sound eventually became the backbone to "80s music."

And none of that would have happened without this movie.

neither

eww

neither are least bit hot

Agreed ... but it's more about "types."

Do you like the preppy type or the rebel. Ally Sheedy/Jud Nelson is the rebel. Emilio Estevez/Molly Ringwald is the prep.

Which do you prefer?

The whole idea of Molly Ringwald being a sex symbol was always somewhat confusing to me. For a while she was such the it girl, but I never found her attractive. It made me think I was into freaks or my tastes were off (or both). I was too young to know about things like preferences.

It's just amazing, looking at the film now, that she was so hot back in the day.

well easy then

preppy

i would feel kind of insecure going out with a rebel

*is she going to steal my wallet tonite when we go out?*

Something nobody remembers from this movie: Behind the style and on top of the story are really good performances by Jud Nelson and Ally Sheedy. Jud Nelson is really, really good. He completely carries this movie, bring each plot element to the individual characters.

Nobody ever talks about that.

So the first thing to talk about is ...

if you're a guy, are you an Ally Sheedy or Molly Ringwald guy?

YEEEEEEEEEEES ! A thread about my fave movie ever ! Richard, you´re the coolest !

I had a crush on Judd Nelson back then :) My fave character still is the basketcase... Man, I can relate to her soooooooooooooooo much ! Like, I can stay in one place and no one notices me... And I don´t care :D

John Hughes was my fave movie director.... Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink.. He really liked Molly Ringwald (and so did I).

I used to watch it everyday... and I made my friends watch it too :D

Everyone here should watch this movie, cause it´s the best ever !

I love the part where she draws the scenic picture and then has dandruff fall from her hair to simulate snow ...

... and how she is so proud of it.

Good moment.

This movie is definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time (not to be confused with top 10 best movies of all time). This movie is always fun.

We all talk about the preepy and the rebel.. What about the nerd one ? Anthony Michael Hall ? His character made me cry a lot... And laugh too, specially when he smokes that joint..

True, but I don't think that his character is really supposed to be sexual in any way ...

... although there is a point in the movie (that just passed) where he puts his hat ni his lap to hide his erection.

That was very subtlely funny.

How about the sugar sandwich ? Yuck :P

I was in the US back in '97, ready to go to bed and this movie was on... I couldn´t stay up the next day... LOL

I think we all have a bit of every character of the movie, don´t you think ?

I completely agree, and if you look at the structure of the script Hughes makes a point to go, almost in order, to each character and show you how that person is like you. The best example of this is where they're all sharing their talents with each other, but the first happens early in the movie when each character talks about their parents ... and none of them like their parents.

"Let's end this now. You know talk to her. You don't look at her."

"I'm trying to help her."

I like how they position Bender as the philosophical one. It's interesting.

yeah... like.. we all have problems with our parents...

So the first thing to talk about is ...

if you're a guy, are you an Ally Sheedy or Molly Ringwald guy?
