The landscape is so perfect it might have been painted by numbers. But this spectacular backdrop of red and gold is a living work of art, coloured only by nature.

At a time when Britain is supposed to be shivering in the misery of depressingly dark evenings, cancelled trains and steel grey skies, it shines like a beacon of autumnal glory. The effect is a dazzling mural that illuminates the annual gloom.

Gallery: Autumn colours

The explosion of colour is the most dramatic for years at Stourhead in Wiltshire, one of the nation's most popular heralds of Autumn.

The National Trust gardens attract a flood of visitors to witness how the leaves have changed from the delicate greens of summer to the breathtaking hues of Autumn.

This year they are being treated to what head gardener Alan Power believes is the finest display he has seen at Stourhead - albeit a little later than usual.

All over the country, most leaves are only just turning yellow. The delayed start to our most colourful season is a phenomenon to which we have become increasingly accustomed these last few years.

A happy coincidence of hot early summer, wet September and mild November means the leaves stay longer on the trees before frost and bitter winds send them fluttering to the ground.

Hence, the same colours emerging at Stourhead are currently being repeated in little pockets of gold across the land, like miniature mirrors of America's celebrated New England fall.

But just like painting by numbers, each splash of colour on the Stourhead canvas has been carefully planned.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Stourhead's owner Richard Colt-Hoare imported trees from around the globe to complement our native species.

Meticulous planting by generations of gardeners ensured that the trees blend beautifully together all year - and never more so than in Autumn.

Last year high winds blew the leaves early from the trees and left a less than inspiring display.

This year, climatic conditions allowed them to create extra starch - and thus, the unprecedented intensity of colour.

Particularly magnificent is a huge tulip tree on an island in the lake, which glows bright yellow and amber against the dark water.

Then there are the copper and native beech trees, displaying their range of colours like a paint chart.

Not forgetting the shrubs, such as the yellow-red Enkianthus campanulatus, from Japan; or the ruby red of Cotinus obovatus, from North America. Even the coots look happy in the chilly, shimmering water.

So is the dread global warming responsible for it all?

'I don't think so,' said assistant head gardener Paul Alexander.

'I think we've just been extremely lucky with the combination of weather conditions this year. It has produced the most fantastic scenes, especially in contrast to last year.

'All you have to do is look out of the window to see the results - it seems to be the same all over the country. But there are particular trees here which really bring out the colour. It probably won't get much better than this.'

The colours are likely to remain vibrant for as long as the current spell of good weather endures. Then, the wind will strip the trees to leafless silhouettes against increasingly grey skies.

Until, of course, that other spectacular pallette of nature turns them once again to the crisp, fresh greens of Spring.

Hmm thinking up a wise crack?

Mmmm... you're touching yourself?

Don't tell ppl that you ****!!!!!!!!!!1 :dozey:

I know that the hoff is behind all those trees

Well that wouldn't surprise me in the least, given his extremely "wooden" acting!!:P
