Los Unidades
Don't you worry. I don't have THAT much time on my hands. Writing lengthy reviews for 4 songs and the EP as a whole was daunting enough for me. :joy::joy: Yep :D

Los Unidades
I bet you've (or some of you who know me) have been waiting around for me to give my opinions on these new songs, by the new Coldplay (Los Unidades). Yes, I heard these songs as soon as they came out. Heard all the songs off the EP as soon as they came out, too. Just didn't get around to posting my opinions on them here (well I did a week ago, but I accidentally closed my window and didn't get back to it till now, and because the draft saving feature is trash it didn't save the 4 paragraph long post I made... ughhhhh have to do it again) Anyway, a disclaimer before I note any of my opinions on these songs: Please don't get offended when I say I don't like a particular song, I am glad that they did this for a good cause and all the boys, not just our frontman Chris Martin, have proven to be interested in getting involved in charity work. That being said, here goes: Stargate - Rise Up (ft. Nelson Mandela): 3 out of 5 I'm aware this doesn't appear to have the Los Unidades (Coldplay) listed on it, at least not in the title, as contributers, and is the only song off the album having that distinction. Thought I'd give my thoughts on it anyway, as its production is similar to the other songs on the album, and I'm not sure, possibly the boys did contribute to it, but aren't credited (which I think is something they don't really do, but anyways). It's actually a decent song, I like the main melody and surprisingly for a producer like Stargate that sample or loop or whatever sounds like it was recorded a while ago. Guess even mainstream producers can surprise us, if even mildly, sometimes. Besides, I'm not a total hater of pop music like some people on here, just the really cheap, uninspired, untalented lame pop (*ahem*Girls Like you*ahem*). I like those echoey sounding parts to the song too, gives the song an otherwise really neat vibe. I surely appreciate the inclusion of Nelson Mandela's words over the otherwise instumental track (and his mentioning in the title, so we all know who the speaker is); it's a great way to set the African theme for the album, to open with who is among Africa's most important icons when it comes to issues like those attempting to be resolved by the Global Citizen movement. Overall, it's decent. Nothing spectacular, as I'd expect from a more pop-focused song from a pop-based producer, but it's definitely not bad at all. Los Unidades & Pharrell Williams - E-Lo (ft. Jozzy): 3.5 out of 5 Alright, the first song off the album (and the first released) to feature Coldplay on it. Whoops, my mistake.. Los Unidades. I'm gonna be honest, before I even heard the song I thought it'd be straight garbage because of the inclusion of Pharrell, but when I took a listen to it (why wouldn't I, it's Coldplay anyway!) I was actually proven wrong. People can say this is a sellout, lame song all they want (not like these people don't realize Coldplay has sold out before, at least in their opinions) and it certainly isn't as densely produced as some of their usual songs, but in my opinion they were able to fuse African influences into this song in a unique way and still retain their "good music" integrity. Most pop songs that try to do this are less than great and usually end up being really generic and lame, but this manages to pull it off. I like it, I'm feeling the groove. Sure, all we hear Chris saying in the chorus is "elololololololo" but I'm not really the type of person to complain about them making random noises for singing sounds. As long as the song has some lyrics with real meaning, I can get along with it as it's still a catchy, good melody, as is what happened in this song. Even then, I wouldn't really mind; sure, the lyrics of a song are important when they're there, but I don't mind the inclusion of things like these into the song. In my opinion, they just serve to enhance the quality of the song when used properly (which, to be honest, is most of the time; it's more a matter of when they don't use it properly that bugs me). It's a style we've never really heard from Coldplay before; I really enjoy those background short-synth sounds in the background, they compliment the African-style drumming very well! I'm glad to see Will Champion play around with legitimately unique styles (if that was him who came up with the idea), and I also like the distant background electronic elements in the song too. They do sound more like the "mainstream" samples we usually hear in normal pop music, but the way they're used I think stands out enough for it to sound good. (I don't mind "mainstream" sounding songs either, but we all know we want more from Coldplay than just that, and I'm glad they didn't just resort to completely selling out like some bands might). I do think what the song would benefit from is some denser, more energetic production near the end of the song in the last chorus; whenever I hear this song in my head I always hear it with more instruments near the ending, particularly a Jonny guitar solo with the same/similar melody as Chris' "e-lo"s throughout the song in the chorus. When I listen to the song, which honestly has only been a few times so far, I always feel like there is something missing at the end (it's not surprising, really, seeing as pop music since around 2013 has became progressively more sparsely produced, with more cheaper-sounding sounds replacing better sounds throughout). Anyway, not complaining too much. Overall, the song's good. Again, nothing truly spectacular, and again I wouldn't expect it from a pop song in this style, but hey, Coldplay pulled off a decent effort nonetheless! Cassper Nyovest & Los Unidades - Timbuktu (ft. Stormy and Jess Kent): 2.3 out of 5 I'm going to have to say, this is my least favorite song off the EP, and it's not just because it happens to be the "worst" song even though it's good; I actually don't really like the song that much at all. This is more of what I was talking about when I'm talking about more "normal", sparsely produced modern electropop music (although this song isn't as bad as some recent songs). Quite disappointed, to be honest. The only part I really like in the song is the chorus when the vocoded Chris comes in with a decent melody, which is unfortunately mostly absent from the rest of the song, against Coldplay tradition. I'll be honest, I've had Chris singing "Timmmmmbukkktuuuu" in my head every now and again from when I first listened to the song. I've listened to it a couple times, like all the other songs, and I'll admit it's grown on me a bit, but still definitely not Coldplay at their best. I do recognize there are at least 3 other people involved in the making of this song (I have more to say on the topic of excessive music collaborations later on in this post, in my overall thoughts about the EP), none of who I've heard before. Because the only good part in the song is the chorus with Chris, and the verses really aren't great at all, it's most definitely the other's influence in the song that was to my distaste (I don't buy the concept that Coldplay can make a song this bad on their own, lol). I've actually noticed a lot of people on here say this is a song they like, and even their favorite song off the album, and I do see where they can be coming from, but the reason I got into Coldplay was because they had more than just poppy catchy music. They had something unique to them, they were the first consistently good band I'd heard in their music (I have a whole long story about how I discovered Coldplay, won't be saying it here, but possibly I'll make a post on it someday. I already think I have somewhere on the forum.. if you want to, you can always look for it! Lol) On the other hand, this type of music is not what I like to see from Coldplay; it's little more than just your everyday generic melody-lacking energy-lacking all-focused-on-catchiness pop song, which is precisely the type of music I was attempting to avoid by listening to Coldplay. Despite me saying all this, I do think the general sounds used in the song do stand out a bit from what's usually heard on the radio (not as bright or "up"? Not really sure how to describe it) but otherwise, it's your run of the mill generic pop song that could easily be played as background music on the radio. Honestly, this song reminds me a lot of Charlie Puth's "Attention" now that I think about it (which is quite a bit better song in my opinion by the way; didn't like it at first, but it's really grown on me since then, and although again it's nothing spectacular, it has a certain catchiness and enough content in the song for me to like it a decent), they have similar production styles. Possibly this song might grow on me if I give it enough time. That's honestly what I find about a lot of pop music; songs like "Closer" by The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey, and the previously mentioned "Atttention" by Charlie Puth are songs I both despised at first, but over the course of several months, I actually came to like them! Although neither are spectacular, they're still both good, fun, enjoyable pop songs, particularly Closer as it's more energetic and fun, despite the lyrical content being sub-par as expected from The Chainsmokers. It's just good fun. Anyway, we'll see whether my opinion on this song changes over the next few months. For now, though, it's not what I want to hear from Coldplay. (I guess I might not hate the song as much had it not been from a rebranded Coldplay, (I guess the normal Coldplay would have been worse, more information on this on the "Overall" section of this post) but either way I guess it's just not my thing). Stargate & Los Unidades - Voodoo (ft. Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Danny Ocean and David Guetta): 3.7 out of 5 I'm gonna be honest, when I first seen this song's title I immediately thought of the song by the same name by Godsmack. I knew it wouldn't be anything like it considering the poppier theme of this EP, which is disappointing, but it actually turned out to be my favorite song from the EP anyways! I know most people on this board don't like EDM at all, but I personally find it far better than modern pop music, even the recent content (despite it also being more sparsely produced and thus less energetic than EDM from, say, the early '10s). I really enjoy that Jonny guitar riff at the start! Reminds me of Ink. Certainly the most "Coldplay" off the EP. This is what I mean when I'm talking about enjoying catchy, bouncy music. This type of it, with actual melody and energy, is much better than normal pop music could ever be. Sure, the diverse influences infused into the song kind of make it sound more mainstream, but again it also does give something different to the song as well. Somebody mentioned it as "world EDM"; interesting idea! As expected from the other songs off the EP, the lyrical content is quite lacking, but that's to be expected from more mainstream pop music anyway, and Coldplay's been going downhill with that anyways, not to mention that the features aren't known for lyrical prowess either. I can definitely hear where David Guetta contributed on the song in the more club-sounding style of the post-chorus (first) and pre-chorus (last) (IIRC), and although club music isn't too much my style when it comes to EDM, I can appreciate it nonetheless, and it definitely gives this song that something it wouldn't have had otherwise. Perhaps the louder bassline was his idea as well (although that's probably just Guy contributing well to the song here). Also liked Jonny's sustained contributions at the end. I think everybody comes in on here to compliment the song really well with their own touches, to make what would have otherwise been a more mainstream EDM song (that it is anyway, but most mainstream EDM IMO isn't bad to my ears anyways) something with a bit more spice to it. I think something I am missing here is something after David Guetta's riser claps or whatever (I could be completely wrong about that being from David Guetta by the way, but out of the 5 other people mentioned in the title who contributed to the song, I can't help but think that was probably him). I know you'll probably all think I'm outrageous for saying this, but I'd really like to hear a club remix or something of this song, retaining the original idea from those riser clap things, but actually extending it and resolving it as it should (I was honestly missing that in the song, a club-based drop to resolve the club-based riser would have been great to hear, but unfortunately it didn't happen.. guess that's what happens when you gotta make a short song with lots of people involved! Not everybody's ideas get heard fully) It just sounds like it should be in there. Ideally the original chorus/drop should be retained as well, but I know anybody who'd do a remix in this style probably wouldn't and would just focus on modifying the style, and besides, then it'd become too long for most people, not including me, to enjoy. Either way, great song, best from the album, and again nothing spectacular but definitely a notch above the rest on this album, and it's good enough for me to say it has "great" status, not just "good" as with E-Lo or Rise Up. Overall: 3 out of 5 It's a decent EP, actually. Sure, it's very pop-focused with some African influences in general, but that isn't a bad thing, and as always. Coldplay always finds a way to bring something new and unique to the table. They definitely do sound a whole lot different here than usual (more poppy), so I'm grateful that they instead made a new band with the name "Los Unidades" for side projects like this. Otherwise, no doubt they'd alienate a lot of their fanbase with this type of music (not like they haven't done enough damage already with AHFOD and other pop albums they've done, which pale in comparison regarding "pop" level to this EP). As for the future of Los Unidades, I really do hope this isn't just a thing they'll do and then abandon it, I hope they'll keep going with this, whether it be in future Global Citizen related EPs, or releasing something else entirely original. After all, the unique name somehow forms an anagram saying "Unsold Ideas", so possibly we'll be able to hear Car Kids in the future! :D I mentioned I was gonna talk about excessive collaborations and how they can actually harm a song's quality. I don't know why, and this sounds very counter-intuitive, I know, but it seems like the more people that work on a song, the worse the song actually is. It seems like acts who have a million features and collabs on their albums aren't nearly as good as those who just write their own music, despite the idea that the more people that work on something, the better it should be. You can find many, many examples of this in the music industry, and we can even find it with Coldplay here! Coldplay never had a single feature on any of their albums until their fifth, and that's when in a lot of people's opinion they began to go downhill (I'll humbly disagree, as that is not only my favorite Coldplay album, but my favorite of all time). The first I remember Coldplay having a feature/collab on a song they made and they released was the alternate version of Lost with Jay Z. (Yes, Coldplay's done collabs with others before that, but they were more released on the other act's titles, not their own on a single, EP, or LP -- this is what I mean when I say the first collab song they've released). But as we see in the later albums, Coldplay's been getting more and more involved with other acts and collabing more. Not including Up&Up, which was a choir and wasn't even credited in the title, I believe this is the first Coldplay (or Los Unidades here) has had at least 2 acts collab on the same song with them. I mean, look at Voodoo -- that's 6 mentions, in a single song! I can't name a pop song off the top of my head that has that many features and collabs.. That being said, IMO it is the best off the EP. But in general, I think a lot of people here would agree this is Coldplay at their worst, and guess what? -- no surprises, it's also the release with the most collabs. I get it, though. It's a charity AP and you'd want many others to get involved, as many as possible. Still. There's definitely a direct correlation between the quality of music and how many people feature/collab on it: the more collabs/features there are, generally speaking, the worse the music is (more in the generic pop direction, then going into mainstream rap and whatever). This certainly isn't to say, though, the more people that work on it, the worse the music is. Linkin Park had many members, and so does Radiohead, yet they both make fantastic music. It's just that when in the title there's features or collabs mentioned, it seems like the more there are, the worse the music gets. I don't know what it is. Just a trend I've noticed. It must be a pop/rap thing or something, because you never almost see it on rock songs, but all the time on pop, rap, even EDM a lot of the time. But I say this because songs with, for example, a single collab, usually aren't so bad, but almost all songs I've heard with 3 or more features/collabs aren't great at all. IDK. Just something interesting I've noticed, that I wanted to share with you all, that you can notice Coldplay doing, and that (most of) you will notice the trend on the EP on. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. :D

Haha, I still come on this forum every now and again. Not a lot, though. I might hang around for a while. A part of it might be that we're finally seeing something from or related to Coldplay again. Their film.

Let's get this thread kicking again with some psychedelic/shoegaze type music. Played this song to death in Rock Band 2 when I was a kid all those years ago. Forgot how good this song was. Somebody mentioned lazy eye to me and I was like, that reminds me of a really good song I heard and played on a video game all those years back, I haven't heard it for at least 5 years... then somebody mentioned "Silversun Pickups?" and I was like "Maybe...?" But I was confused because these guys also made another really good song I'd been familiar with for a few months up till now: Well then. Gonna have to check these guys out cause they got some rockin tunes apparently. Both 5 stars easily IMO.. it's not common I hear songs out of nowhere from a single band at first unrelated to each other and I really like them, only to find out they're made by the same band... That's how I got into Coldplay. Gonna have to listen to more music from these guys. And a fun fact:
Believe it or not, the lead singer IS a guy. It only shines through in his screams, where they do sound male, but I always assumed the lead singer of Lazy Eye was a woman. Apparently not. Surprised me when I found out...

And I thought "Everybody Hates Me" was bad... I know right. Not to mention its music video features mainstream normie Roblox like people in it. No offense to anybody who likes the game...

What were they on when doing this video? Ultra trippy :joy: Emily Warren should be a third member of The Chainsmokers she's only on at least like 4 songs of theirs :joy: EDIT: look in the comments section at all the TOP fans :joy:

Digging the chill vibe, cool blend of the acoustics and the subtle electronic effects I can hear in the background. Very creative as well, giving it a higher rating for me. Keep it up :D Great piano coming in a ways into the track as well. Very well done. TOP's new single is LIT:

The Chainsmokers
Definitely, they redeemed themselves a lot with this song and it sounds like an actual good song. You Owe Me is decent too but a bit basic. Every Body Hates Me backing track is decent, melodic but basic, and the lyrics are terrible. Somebody sees the duo taking a bit of a new direction, blending their usual electropop sound with a bit of an original unique touch to it. Hopefully their new album will be a bit more unique then their last. I liked a lot of their songs from their last album but there's no doubt there's little originality in the album. Not it's a huge deal though, it's melodic, upbeat, and fun enough, just not very creative. Their new music is showing a bit different, hopefully they start to grow as they get more and more music. Also I haven't been on here in a while, great to see yall again. I came back here bacause I searched up the Chainsmokers in Google in hopes of finding a new song from these guys. But here's what I got: EDIT: apparently this site doesn't like Imgur so here's a link :joy::joy:

Something kind of funny... Friday has got to be my favourite day of the week because most musicians and bands release their new stuff on the last weekday. It's a bang-up way how to start enjoying the weekend. :joy: So, my newest revelation regarding a recording artist is Ciaran Lavery, an Irish singer-songwriter! Yesterday he debuted the first single "To Chicago" taken from his upcoming album Sweet Decay which is about to be dropped in April. I'm absolutely in love with this song since it's simple and really different from the music I've been listening to lately. Give it a chance!
I know right! It's a fantastic album, I personally like a lot of Taylor Swift for a lot of the melodic aspects of her music but she's completely changed things up this time, and for the better. I can already start to see some influences this album is having on the mainstream........ Heard this on Alt Nation the other day, thought it was a recently released song but I looked it up and it's actually from over a decade ago! Wow. A sound that's so ahead of it's time. It's not unimaginable that Coldplay might be heading this direction next with their music, that'd be great!

Random Coldplay thoughts...
You do have some points there. There should have at least been a christmas/happy new year message to us, very strange that there was none of that.... And they didn't send any messages on acknowledging the awards they won either, very strange... Hope they come back soon, this isn't really the best of signs :/

Yeah, it definitely does seem like their inactivity on social media is hinting at a hiatus... If so it's no big deal. They've only worked on the album for some time, released it, and ended up doing an almost 2 year long tour going around the globe as many times. Don't know, they manage to do it for so long, and appear just fine on the stage like they (especially Chris Martin) has endless amounts of energy.... Doing shows that much and still having enough in each show to make it seem like you still have so much energy... I suppose it's not hard having the energy to do a show like that when the music does enough of the vibe, but to jump around on stage in all shows.... He has so much energy.... Not to mention the other band members, they've done similar songs probably hundreds of times now (some thousands probably! Probably not tens of thousands but you never know lol, well I guess that'd be crazy, maybe some bands out there have done songs that many times) And they still manage to rarely mess up. Great show they do all the time, it's hard to say "keep it up" when they've proven it so much that they're great performers. They really need a break now, not only to spend time thinking about what their next album will be and sound like but just to take some time off. I'm not surprised if they go on hiatus or anything like that. Can't blame em.
I haven't heard the whole Reputation album but perhaps I might really give it a chance and listen to it. :innocent: Anyway, thank you for your explication. I've learnt something new at least when I have nothing to say whatsoever. :D I'm too lazy and tired for making out something to answer... This time there's no comment of mine. :joy:
Either way, probably both. So much effort if you take it too far. A bit too much effort, when it's only a discussion really. Interesting to think about these things but it hurts both the brain and my hands.... We're like the opposite of most people on the Internet, looking for depth in conversations rather than keeping it short, concise, and to the point...
If you enjoy hard hitting, strictly electronic vibes for the most part, you'll like it. Expect melody here and there, but not a lot. Focus on the originality of the production, and it might be a bit more appealing to think that it's an album that took a bit of effort at least, to come up with a new sound by merging some influences that already existed and trying to come up with something new. Whether you like it or not, IMO it's an effort by Taylor Swift anyway to bring some originality to the table in terms of the music industry and the charts. Not many better than her to do it, since she's already famous and has had numerous Top 40 singles. It's definitely a very unique album, but you might not think it to be that great.... To be honest a lot of the songs didn't impress me all that much besides the already released radio singles. It definitely all has a very cohesive, creative sound though. Nice to see her experimenting with different styles as she's done in this album with the harsher electronic overtones present. It's not for everyone though. Just like with all original/experimental music (here, experimental/industrial/trap electropop for the most part) it's simply something new she's trying and I'm sure she knows it won't be well recieved by everyone, as any might be. Although a lot of people might end up liking the sound, lots might not. It's hard to tell, that's simply the way experimental music works... And, I don't blame you. Don't be pressured to come up with an extensive response just because I did. I did it to you, so it's fine you did it to me. I don't mind. I went into more detail here (again) just because I felt like it, I'm trying to keep my responses a bit more limited so I don't end up going on a huge off topic rant about music mainly but oh well. I think it's been working in my recent posts. Hopefully I don't get too off topic as I'm starting to do as I type right now... maybe I should just stop here. Lol Niceeee, not expecting someone'd actually know her on the forums but I guess I should have expected you (and if I had to choose anyone who I think'd know about Grimes it'd probably be you, seeing as you like this type of music in general, unique and creative). Totally agree. Just found her, will have to listen to more of her music! (Side note: Why do I always keep referring to "Grimes" as "them" or "their"? I know you never seen it but I keep doing it, and then going back and realizing she's a solo artist, and as you've mentioned, one of the most solo out there as she does nearly everything. So I have to keep editing it lol so I don't look like I don't know what I'm talking about) And your edit of Birds is very well done, I enjoyed it. Liked the idea of the mashup. Great version of Birds! Liked it. (Lorde is, by the way, also fairly good IMO, at least from what I've heard, I've listened to a few of her songs and she sounds decent, will have to listen to more though. I do remember her being featured on one of Disclosure's tracks, Magnets, only knowing that since Jon Hopkins did a fire remix of it. Really enjoyed that)

To think that these guys played their first gig 20 years ago... Already... I bet they never knew they'd come such a long way in a short time. And, here we are, 20 years later, idk how many fans, idk how many shows, tons of songs, several albums and released.... Have to be one of the most successful bands of all time. Especially internationally.
I am totally keen on this track! I've been loving it since the very first time I heard it.
Yes, but they do take so much effort... I do like lots of in depth conversations especially about music but my hands end up hurting after some time. :D
Same. It's just so unique, and at the same time stripped down... That vocal chop melody that begins the track is very nice, the strings build up to the first part where there's not a whole lot going on, and the chorus features a rare instance of where trap drums actually don't sound all that bad and enhance the feeling of it. This keeps going (with a stripped down bridge where the percussion drops for the most part, and a pre chorus kind of section with the same sort of trap drum pattern but pushed back a bit) with the background synths gradually rising each time until the very end where they truly get to shine, and makes the track a melodic emotional masterpiece. Only thing I wish from this track was that at the end after the trap drums cease, the synths and the melodic elements of the song get to shine on their own once more with no percussion, and then the track end as normal with everything stopping, and the singer saying "to" at the end. But overall a surprisingly great track, Taylor Swift's new album, although not necessarily the most melodic or emotional, is in my opinion very creative, unique, and experimental even, she time and time again merges electropop with trap (done right, again) and industrial influences. It's the production on this album, daring to challenge the norm of pop music today, that makes this album great for me. This song IMO is a perfect lead up into the closer, and is very well placed in the album tracklist into New Year's Day, my personal favorite. As much as I like the originality of the other tracks, at the end of the day in my opinion, melodic, emotional tracks always win for me, and the more those two elements shine the more I'll like a track (but the less I'll listen to it in general, since I generally don't want to always feel either so high or so low all the time, and I don't want the song to get old, despite my liking it so much). So yeah. I managed once again to stay on topic this time and not do a bunch of needless explaining. Yay. Posts in length like these at least don't make my hands hurt as much....

Underrated/Overrated Acts
I can see what you're saying with that, but I've never heard any song on the radio other than her "Royals". I've probably heard other songs of hers but they were likely not popular enough for me to hear it over and over and regocnize it as a Lorde song. I'm not saying she's bad at all, Royals is great and Magnets is too. And I'm sure she isn't a one hit wonder. Maybe where you live some more of her songs became popular, and she's a bit more recognized there but I haven't heard her all that much on the radio in Canada. I do remember Royals being on radio quite a lot though, and that's without doubt her biggest selling single, or at least her most recognizable. Unless I'm mistaken and a few of her songs I don't know the name of but do know well, or at least I knew well back then, I've probably forgotten it almost entirely as it hasn't been on radio for a long time like the majority of songs from a few years back. To be honest that era was so much better than the one we're in now, I don't remember a lot of the songs from it but I'd say I'd do so if I heard them again, it'd be like "Oh yeah its that song, this one's really good!" As is what happened a few weeks with "I Will Wait" by Mumford and Sons. Just was dying to know what the song was, so I Shazamed it and finally knew what it was, it was a song I liked for a long time when it first came out and was on radio. So yeah. EDIT: Hey I managed to keep my arguments to the point and concise this time! Instead of going off topic and wasting my time explaining things I shouldn't be!

Underrated/Overrated Acts
Not sure about Goo Goo Dolls, don't know a lot about how critics think of them, but they're a great band, and if critics and people don't really think they're that great they're definitely underrated. Iris is timeless. Daughtry is ultra underrated. Most critics like to bash post-grunge/pop bands like these, labeling the music as "generic and bland" and "copied off of more unique genres that preceded it such as grunge", and even though the latter statement has some credibility to it I still personally enjoy listening to some post-grunge, it's a great genre and if you completely forget about what preceded it and what made it happen in the first place, it's enjoyable. For the people who think grunge is better and think post-grunge is a fake cheap ripoff made by the record labels in order to find the next Nirvana, at least that should help. Sometimes it helps to try to forget the fact that some music might be made more or less for a like of money, because that thought certainly taints great genres like post - grunge, that are actually fairly melodic, with some pop and rock influences, that are fairly enjoyable. Anyway, Daughtry does fall under this genre, and especially more at the pop side of it as they've merged some influences with bands such as Nickelback and 3 Doors Down. It's not necessarily the most unique sound, but it's a melodic and enjoyable one. Sometimes I feel people whine too much about how music isn't "unique" enough or whatever. Of course it's a bad thing if every single song sounds the exact same as is what is on the radio today with boring mainstream electropop. But it's okay if music is inspired or even sounds fairly similar to another act's music, that is music being made by a different act sounds similar to another's music. Especially if it's a good sound like post-grunge, of course I bet a fair amount of people on the forums don't like this genre or it's sound simply due to it's blandness and genericness, and uninspired in some parts even though it might be slightly melodic like Coldplay's music, a lot of the people on this forum seem to enjoy music mostly for if it's creativity is apparent, and it's unique. Which isn't most post-grunge lol, I don't really think I can name one song under the category of post-grunge that's really creative or unique in any way in fact lol. But I think that's not that big of a deal, it's melodic, fun, and meaningful most of the time, which is what I truly enjoy in music. Of course I do look for creativity and uniqueness in music, but it's not a deal breaker if a song's not unique, However, if a song is unique and creative I will recognize that, even if it's worse than a song that I personally like more for it's melodicness for example, I'll respect the unique song more just because I know it took more effort to make, and is more artistic. I enjoy a lot of bland, generic, and uninspired, uncreative pop music I will admit, but at least I can admit it is that way. So yeah.

Underrated/Overrated Acts
- I am currently listening to....
If none of you have heard of Grimes yet, I highly recommend you check the music out. This is for anyone who enjoys melodic electropop that sounds very different, this is an extremely unique song as far as I'm concerned and I don't think I've ever heard anything like it before. Wish this girl'd blow up in the charts already so we can save the mainstream music scene from the terrible that it is right now.
Completely agree with everything you said in the first part of the post. I in fact believe that a lot of pop music, or at least a sizable portion of what was on the charts, was good all the way up till around 2012, the early 2010's I enjoy a lot because in general it's high energy music, quite dense sounding (and by that I mean there's sounds that strech out and are sustained in stark contrast to today's pop music production style, taking too many sounds out and leaving overall an empty space in the record that so desperately shouldn't exist. It can work at certain times, but in general I find music that has long sustaining synths and what not to go for that "dense" vibe a lot better still. Also you'll hear a lot of sounds are too start-stop-start again, which again leaves too much space in the record for me IMO.) As you said, late '90s and early '00s pop music are fantastic. I'd say any era until around 2012 to 2013. And I'm not really including 2013 in this discussion because even though a lot of music from that year is great as well a fair amount of it actually falls under the indie pop/rock category which is even better to be honest. The straight pop songs from that year though are where it starts to go downhill, 2014 was filled with what seems like mainly pop songs with sustained-synth sounds like I usually like but with a much more "normal" vibe, with not a whole ton of energy, but as the production's not too chopped up it's still something I enjoy a lot, if not as much as more high-energy pop music or even EDM. 2015 is where this chopped-up too-much-space-in-the-record production style starts to appear, and around mid 2015 when Worth It by another girl group who isn't worth mentioning, when that was released it was the beginning of the end unfortunately. Hotline Bling? Get ready for the throwaway bland, generic, talentless uninspired trap-pop hits about to come out! Some recent examples include "Bank Account" by 21 Savage and "Rockstar" by Post Malone ft. 21 Savage, neither song deserves any recognition at all. If I could have access to simply the backing track alone and make some sort of cool ambient remix of both of those songs that'd be far better than those songs that they are right now, there's no need for those annoying trap drums and autotuned voices layered on top of it, especially 21 Savage's terrible rap voice, like seriously, I think he might be my least favorite artist of all time now simply because you can tell in his voice, he puts zero effort into his vocal performances, and whenever he tries to do any replication of melody it ends up needing autotune because even in the low register he sings in he still somehow can't speak (not sing, speak, because that's all he's doing) well enough to hold a note for any longer than a millisecond. Honestly, if this guy can make money with that voice anything's possible for me, unless the mainstream music scene as it is right now changes drastically. Where has music gone in the past few years? It went from quite way up there with consistently enjoyable music topping the charts to this guy who can't speak without autotune let alone sing? And you'll notice in his "Bank Account" the parts where he's not autotuned and it honestly makes my ears bleed. Ugh. He's worse than Drake and Future combined! Anyway, enough of my needless ranting on current-day trap, pop, and mumble rap music, and especially bashing 1 artist in particular. Talking about what you said in the second part of your post, I might have been mistaken. It might have actually had been a big song at the time , and Pure Shores might have got some recognition for it for sure, seeing as it was apparently part of a soundtrack (well themed too I'd assume if the movie's called "The Beach", great song selection here). But there's a possibility that the song was released before I was even born.... lemme look it up... and it in fact was. Yes. I'm extremely young lol. Not really. So I really have no actual idea on the popularity of the song at that time, but I'd imagine it wasn't remembered for a very long time since the YouTube video for it only has a few million views, so I just assumed it didn't get that big, and I don't ever remember clearly hearing it on the radio before my mom noticed it playing on Stingray the other day and went on and on about how good the song was, so I decided to check it out for myself since both of us have a fairly common music taste (at least for the most part) and I decided it was a fairly good song, I remember also hearing it on that radio too and also enjoying it. But I never guessed it was this big. I guess I should just shut my mouth when it comes to music before anything early 2000's and it's popularity, because I'd imagine there was a lot of "big" songs at that time that never got played anywhere for years afterwards again, or rarely if so, so it didn't sound that big. Because you obviously have your classics and immediately recognizable songs from previous decades and all that, and it's too bad that this probably wasn't one of them, even though a lot of people aged a bit older than me'd probably recognize it if only mildly only a short time after hearing it. Maybe a lot of people seem to be remembering it now, like my mom and you now that they've heard it once again lol. Hopefully interest in previous great songs like this will inspire people like me who are aspiring to create and produce some of their music of their own, or even produce music and are big name artists already, and let them be influenced by these songs or even to create some more original sounds so we can finally replace, beat, and defeat this all too familiar terrible pop music sound that's popular in the mainstream music scene today. Because something really needs to change, fast. What's next? (The good thing is, I've already been hearing some songs in late 2017 that got popular that have challenged some trends such as trap-pop island tracks for the tropics, highly pitched vocal chops, autotuned mumble rap vocals, etc... most notably Taylor Swift's recent album, some of the songs off of that such as "Look What You Made Me Do", "Ready For It", not necessarily melodic, and might be a minor trap influence but it's not autotuned, there's a lot of harsh and unique electronic sounds in these songs though, and there's not a whole lot of melody to it, but that's fine, the production is very unique in my opinion and reminds me of some industrial influences too, which as far as I'm concerned is a very, very diverse influence to incorporate into your music, especially trying to make it popular (and surprisingly succeeding massively) and possibly leading to a revival of the genre, as you know lots of people try to copy other's success and some do succeed, resulting in an overall popularity of whatever genre that is, making it "trendy" and "cool" and whatever, hopefully that happens at least to some sort of extent with Taylor Swift's new industrial-pop style, not too much however because as engaging as it is there should be room for melodic songs as well, like what Taylor Swift did before this drastic change in her style, and an unprecedented one at that. Also, Feel it Still with it's slightly melodic vibes and "psychedelic pop" influences is a very exciting change to hear for once, it really provides a stark and strong contrast to nearly everything else that's popular right now). End of unnecessarily long, overly ranting, overly explained post lol - I am currently listening to....
