Kaleidoscope EP
IMO the "hip hop beats" in this song are a lot better than a lot of the beats in the hip hop songs popular today that sound terrible and fake... I really hope they release that Tomorrow someday, from the title I'd assume it to be a really good song I agree about Big Sean, I personally think though he did good but it isn't necessary to have him in there. Prob just something to get the song extra popularity if it is released. Don't forget Car Kids :P Pleaasssee, let it be a better outro. It's one of the only things wrong with the song, the outro isn't so spectacular...

A L I E N S
It's official, everyone. Coldplay has redeemed themselves creatively. And yes B sides from the past two eras have been fantastic in terms of that, but it seems that this time they're really showing off a new direction. This song is unlike anything they've done before overall. It does remind me distantly of parts of Only Superstition, and overall seems like a cross between Viva and MX like Moving to Mars. I have just listened to it a few times so I am still attempting to grasp the sound (and it doesn't help that I was listening and reading this thread at the same time) and I still don't fully understand it yet, but that's what makes songs like this so good, you'll find things in there 6 months later that you never discovered before, and you'll enjoy it much longer than a normal pop song. This is Trending at #22 on YT right now. Please, please let this blow up and save pop music. It's already got over a million views! [spoiler=A lot of replies] You know Coldplay's gotten real good in the past bit when they start getting compared to Radiohead again. :D I'm not sure Eno worked on Ghost Stories but I know it had something to do with Jon Hopkins (much less talked about on these forums but still incredibly talented). Coldplay needs to work with him and Eno again, because so different songs like this will come from it. I never ever seen this coming... Now that you mention it, I can hear the similarities. And I agree that this is the most different song from this era. I thought AICTAIY was outstanding... (and it still is, but this new song is just wayyyyyyyy out there....) It's too sad that at least a part of this song is only a leftover from their better years, but at least we get to hear full versions of these teased songs for once! Maybe it's just a part of it that was left over, that they built on recently and is now developed... Yeah, I'd be all up for a hiatus, they've given us a possible taste of what they'll come up with after that. It'll give them time to think about their new direction. I think the best thing'd be for them to keep their pop side but incorporate diverse influences, and make it really unique and creative, like they did in Viva or even MX. The mainstream pop world needs some creativity for once, and I hope Coldplay will be able to open everyone up to some original ideas for the first time in a long time. It seems like that, in a way like you described maybe Chris is regaining some of his lyrical abilities. Some of it still doesn't make sense but it's kind of meant to be like that, "alienating". Hmm... yeah I thought this'd be A L I E N S but as we've heard it isn't. I so want to hear more of this though, and who knows. It could have been something they considered for the EP but never released. As has happened before though, they might put this on a future album of theirs sometime down the road (and that's what happened with this one, or at least a part of it, from Viva/MX era.) Note: It blows me away how they make songs like this and AICTAIY yet are still interested in collaborating with artists like The Chainsmokers and Big Sean... EDIT: This kinda reminds me of Reckoner in a way...

Miracles (Someone Special) ft. Big Sean
Woah, this is way better. Thanks! Too bad it's not full length... I feared the worst for this song, that it would feature a trap beat with no melody. Thankfully I was proven wrong, and we all have another great pop-rock song to enjoy. It's definitely not for the Oldplayers on the forum, but let's at least be thankful that Coldplay haven't succoumed to toe newest pop trend of letting go of the dense sustained layers, sounds, and melody that makes good pop music good in the first place. This song sounds so similar to ASFOS, just with a different beat. Definitely has the potential to be a hit. Definitely not something for the Oldplayers though. I don't think Big Sean's part is all that necessary, but he did a good job. Can't hear any autotune or anything, so I'm glad that won't ruin the song. Overall: Not Coldplay's best, most original, or unique song, but still enjoyable and catchy. Hopefully this gets some airplay so people who listen to the radio finally get a dose of what good pop-rock is all about again. Of 10, probably a solid 6 or 7.

Random Coldplay thoughts...
I think people call them that in the musical sense that they're making their sound poppier, and they don't like that, and so they think that it's them trying to keep up with current pop trends for more popularity, and thus more money. I do believe that in some songs like HFTW that their sound is at least partially inspired for a desire to stay really popular (and, collaborating with the Chainsmokers on SJLT? No doubt in my mind.) But I won't go as far as to call them sellouts, especially now since some of what we heard from the upcoming EP is actually really unique and original sounding music. It's what AHFOD was supposed to sound like, but as mentioned before due to Stargate that didn't happen, and we got the poppier side of it. (As for songs that aren't HFTW I won't say it's as bad because they're not as poppy as that one). Anyway I'm going off topic, even if they made such music regularly I wouldn't consider them sellouts because of this, all the donating and the work they do for charities is great! And my opinion on all these other things about "it's not close to what they earn in total"... 200K is still a lot, no matter which way you wanna put it. In perspective for someone as rich as Chris Martin it might not be, but to a lot of the rest of the world it is, and it's not just that he donates to charity. As others said, he actually goes to these places and makes whoever's day is there knowing that Chris Martin from one of the biggest and best bands in the world is there. So that's on top of all of the money he donates in the first place, and it would be unfair to say that isn't enough because none of us could even come close to doing that. So IMO every member of Coldplay is very generous, and we should look up to them for donating and helping these charities. @Draco, that would definitely be something interesting to hear. I meant that I'd be afraid of any of the acts I like going total hip-hop because some of them are heading in that direction with less instruments and collaborating with mainstream hip hop artists. And I'm talking about the incredibly unlistenable "hip hop" mainstream rubbish that's popular today with autotuned mumble vocals, no melody, and mediocre beat and lyrics. Any hip hop style that you mentioned that is unique and artistic I would be more than happy to see anyone do. I've never heard anything from those genres but I'd be receptive to it anyway because for one it isn't a mainstream sellout move and secondly I'd guess it would be unique and creative which I'd respect anyway.

Which song do you have stuck in your head right now?
The new Calvin Harris track is nice. I like his sound from his collab with Rihanna on We Found Love and This Is What You Came For better, and also Summer, but his new style's really good too. This song's good because it's just featuring Big Sean and not by him. IMO he didn't do too bad on this track. But I find the worse an artist gets the more collabs they seem to have, and Calvin Harris along with many other acts are beginning collaborations with hip hop artists and changing their sound. I like him now but who knows what kind of music he'll in a few years... As for Big Sean's solo work. I totally agree. Don't expect much from modern hip hop artists. The majority of what you'll hear is autotuned mumbling, trap beats that make your ears bleed, almost zero melody, and mediocre lyrics. Big Sean doesn't rely on the first technique, but almost everyone else does. So he isn't so bad as them but he's still no good.

Wait, does that mean this is their final album? Or it's just their most recent? It would be a shame if they're not making any more music because they're fantastic. Haven't heard much of their music, only 2 songs but I'm assuming they're great. Gonna check them out sometime soon. And, I know right?!! Blows my mind how most pop music started to sound generic and bland in a few short years... And now it all sounds the same.

Random Coldplay thoughts...
I'm surprised he didn't! I think the EP will mostly be really good, but I'm very skeptical on the Big Sean collab. It seems like all artists that used to make good music (IMO) are all of a sudden working with hip hop artists to water down their sound with annoying trap beats, less melody, worse lyrics, etc. These include, but aren't limited to, acts such as our own Coldplay, Calvin Harris, and Maroon 5. I won't mention Sia since The Greatest isn't even that bad and from what I've heard Kendrick Lamar is the best modern rapper right now. (EDIT: Also, Calvin Harris' new style isn't bad. I'm just afraid to hear what his sound will be in a few years. It's the biggest problem with all of these collabs, not necessarily that they're bad now, but they are worse than what these artists used to make, and I fear all of these artists will go full blown hip hop in a few years... okay, not Coldplay, but everyone else perhaps. Hopefully this is just a phase the mainstream is going through that won't last...) Haven't heard Lana but I'm assuming she's good since some people on this forum mentioned her as one of their favorite mainstream acts...
