  1. Somebody explain to me the difference between drunk driving and other types of distracted driving? There is none. If we're going to be logically consistent, we should lock her up for a couple months.
  2. Great, maybe he can work manning microwave crowd-control weapons: Psychopathic? Enjoy the adoration of the unthinking masses? Want to be a tax-grazer? Join the military!
  3. Think of it this way: if they didn't issue these fines, the Government would have to raise taxes among all Britons (albeit by a very small amount) to collect the revenue necessary to allow these wardens to keep their jobs!
  4. lol that's actually a pretty clever advert. A lot of overweight people enjoy being fat though. It's psychological - they find life easier without unwanted sexual advances... and being bigger makes you feel safe. Also society expects less of fatties. There's a whole field of study on this, it's pretty interesting.
  5. There's a reason people call it "work" - because given a choice, most people wouldn't do it for free! :P
  6. One of the greatest feelings is getting rid of clutter! I just keep pictures and notebooks/diaries. Otherwise I try to donate things so people can get more use out of it.
  7. lmao so they think the only way to avoid showing deference to one bullsh!t collectivist institution (the British Government) is to fall back on another bullsh!t collectivist institution (Islam). "My God is better than your God!"
  8. I'd like to see a Russian mow my lawn in August.
  9. The battery tax will create deadweight loss, reducing the overall number of batteries purchased by marginal consumers. As a result, the battery-makers will be forced to lay off workers. A fraction of those workers will become employed by the government in their recycling plant. The extra money consumers pay to buy batteries will no longer cycle efficiently through the economy, and it will reduce demand for other goods/services. NEXT.
  10. I couldn't have said it better myself! There is a strange tendency among people to believe that it's possible to strike a perfect balance with just the right laws, just the right level of taxes, just the right politicians... but inevitably the unintended consequences rain down every so often, and we write new laws or begin new governments while mumbling, "THIS won't happen again!" But it does. It's a cycle. But I don't believe it's in human nature to be violent, I think that's something we learn. It's been passed down through parent/child relationships since our Neanderthal ancestors were clubbing each other instead of trading. Trade is a fantastic concept because it recognizes that we are all equal, and we all have dignity and rights - the right to say "I accept" or "I refuse" to any offer. It's founded in empathy, which all children have. So even if you don't think there will ever be a voluntary society, or you find my single-mindedness to be too extremist for your liking... at least follow and teach your children the non-aggression principle. So they can recognize better when they've made a mistake, and why the world operates as it does.
  11. I don't think the law matters at all here. This strikes at the core of human essence and civility - one man violated the non-aggression principle!
  12. Or dispense with fake paper money and go to a gold standard? After all, gold's value won't collapse...
  13. We just need a few more incidents like this and finally people will see what a peaceful religion Islam really is!
  14. When I say "more expensive meat" I'm pointing out that meat is subsidized by most governments. If you take away the free farmer cash, the cost of unhealthy foods increases, and the cost of healthy food decreases. So for instance, fruits and vegetables are expensive because our government makes it illegal to hire certain people (undocumented workers) who would work in the fields very cheaply. Instead farmers are forced to hire workers who get an artificially-high wage, and this forces the price of the food up. In America corn syrup is cheaper than sugar. There are tons of examples of how government interference causes our diet to be skewed toward unhealthy food.
  15. The solution: Cheaper vegetables/fruits, more expensive meats, and everybody has to pay for their own health care. Oh and we could program everyone to find fatties less attractive than their fit counterparts. What's that? God already designed us that way?
  16. They made up for it by using that beautiful font, Helvetica!
  17. How sad. Soviets, Taliban, Americans... it all adds up.
  18. Airport security is worthless. It's just an annoying kabuki theater to make passengers feel like the government cares about their safety, enough to strip-search you and break all your stuff.
  19. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9CPR7QG0&show_article=1 Good job, fellas!
  20. And that's the point of this article - it shouldn't be. What you learn when you get an economics degree isn't real economics. It's bullcrap propaganda designed to keep the money-shufflers at the top. Finance isn't meant to be such a profitable venture. When you think about it, all money managers do is shift capital around. They do it FAR more efficiently than governments can (because there is a profit motive), but they don't deserve the high compensation they get. Just like doctors don't deserve their high salaries. But there is licensure involved, which limits the competition.
  21. I see this repeated so much, and so often, from so many different people. And I genuinely wonder: where does it come from? I can only assume that somewhere along the way people gather enough anecdotal, empirical, and a priori evidence to solidify this notion in their mind as a nonnegotiable fact of nature. Does it come from Disney movies you see growing up? Or maybe public school? I feel like an anthropologist now, humans are so fascinating!
  22. Yay! We all have health insurance (at the point of a gun)! Now what? Oh that's right, now we all need DOCTORS. http://www.politico.com/livepulse/1209/Dems_not_worried_about_postvote_backlash_at_home.html?showall All my hopes and dreams... finally...
  23. I think Americans are about to learn the hard way that economic freedom trumps social freedom any day of the week. China's the perfect example of this.
  24. On rare occasion, the government will accidentally do something to satisfy its subjects' concerns. Here's a great example: http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_14030412 I hope this gets implemented all over America! But I'm not holding my breath.
