  3. ANIMAL SHATTERS 100M WORLD RECORD ANIMAL was yesterday hailed as the fastest Muppet alive after shattering the 100m world record. The crazy-eyed drummer clocked a time of 9.69 seconds at the Stockholm Grand Prix, slicing three one-hundredths off the record set by Jamaica's Usain Bolt. Animal's world-beating performance is the best by a drummer this year and confirms their continued ascendancy in the track and field arena. The 32 year-old Muppet is now looking forward to an Olympic showdown in Beijing with Phil Collins, Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees and Coldplay's Will Champion. This summer's games will also be the swansong for Neil Peart of Rush who is hoping to defend his pole vault title for the last time. Wayne Hayes, editor of Athletic Drummer magazine, said: "Drummers have become steadily more successful since Charlie Watts took bronze in the 1968 Olympic triple jump. "The high point is still the 4x400 relay victory in Montreal by four of the surviving drummers from Black Sabbath." He added: "Drummers just love to run and skip and jump, and of course these days they take fewer drugs than many of the top athletes." An ecstatic Animal said last night: "Ah-ha-ha-ha. Eat drums. Eat Drums." http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/sport/sport-headlines/animal-shatters-100m-world-record--200807231115/

  10. Customers at HMV stores will be able to avoid paying VAT by ordering CDs and DVDs through digital terminals. By Graham Tibbetts Last Updated: 5:15PM BST 21 Jul 2008 The "HMV Delivers" kiosks are being installed across the chain's 240 UK branches over the next two years. Their initial role will be to allow customers to order products that are out of stock in their shops. The merchandise will then be sent from HMV's offshore site in Guernsey. Under European law goods priced below £18 that are imported by individuals into the UK from outside the EU qualify for "low value consignment relief" and are exempt from the standard 17.5 per cent VAT. The digital terminals will allow HMV to build on their current free home delivery service, which already operates from Guernsey and gives customers the opportunity to order out of stock goods online or at HMV counters. HMV can offer free delivery from the Channel Island because the tax loophole more than covers the cost of postage. Customers using the service could save £7 on the £25 store price of the Prime Suspect DVD box set, or £2 on Coldplay's latest album, Viva la Vida, which sells for £10.99 in HMV stores. Aspokesman for HMV said that it was rare for its products to be out of stock and that the cost to the Treasury last year was around £140,000. "Very few people used the service last year because our stores are well-stocked. We have the kiosks in five stores at the moment and we will roll it out over the next 18-24 months," he said. "We expect this to remain an extremely marginal channel for sales. Our aim is always to have fully stocked stores so people can find what they want to buy." The spokesman said the kiosks were ultimately intended to be used for downloading music, enabling customers to buy tracks and albums for their MP3 player. However, the music industry still had to agree about making downloads compatible with all systems. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2439461/HMV-customers-to-exploit-tax-loophole-at-digital-terminals.html

  12. Sienna Miller, Madonna and Leonardo DiCaprio have all been shortlisted to be named world's greenest celebrity for their contributions to environmental issues. The A-listers will all vie for the crown of Greenest Star at Disney's Playing for the Planet Awards for using their celebrity status to push eco issues up the world agenda. A total of ten famous faces are up for the accolade. Sienna has been recognised for her work raising awareness about global warming, meanwhile Leonardo has campaigned hard and donated generously to numerous green campaigns as well as making recent eco documentary, The 11th Hour. Other nominees include supermodel Lily Cole, who works exclusively with environmentally aware companies, and power couple Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. Gwyneth has fronted US campaigns to cut down on oil use, while the Coldplay frontman uses an eco-friendly tour bus with recycling on-board. Stella McCartney, Johnny Depp, Lily Allen and David Tennant also made the shortlist. You can vote for the greenest celebrity until 31 July at http://www.playhousedisney.co.uk/playingfortheplanet. 13. The winners and losers of the Mercury shortlist Let’s be clear about this. It wasn’t that the music industry types assembled at the announcement of this year’s Nationwide Mercury Shortlist didn’t like Raising Sand – although from the synchronized quizzical furrowing of 200 eyebrows, you would have been forgiven for thinking that. It’s just that the Mercury is a prize awarded to British albums. Admittedly, Robert Plant is British, but on a record of duets with an American singer (Alison Krauss) comprised mostly of American songs, many chosen and produced by an American (T-Bone Burnett) – well, it seemed a little contrary. But then, contrary is what the Mercury does best of all. Hence no room for Goldfrapp and Paul Weller, despite both releasing the most acclaimed albums of their careers in recent months. Having been nominated for their previous three albums – including 2005’s turgid X and Y, Coldplay will feel aggrieved that their Viva La Vida opus didn’t make it in. Super Furry Animals’ Hey Venus deserved to be in there, but the Welsh group’s frontman Gruff Rhys will take some comfort in the fact that his moreish synth-pop side project Neon Neon – inspired by the life of Seventies car tycoon John De Lorean – landed him a nomination. It’s surely with mixed feelings that Alex Turner’s fellow Arctic Monkeys will gaze on at the presence of his side-project The Last Shadow Puppets. Turner seems to be conspicuously more fired up by the orchestral pop possibilities explored by him and his new best chum Miles Kane than he ever was in his other band. What distinguishes the Mercury from other music prizes, of course, is its ability to instantly make household names of hitherto unknown artists – if only for a little while. At the Mercury nominations three years ago, Seth Lakeman turned up and – by whipping out his violin and playing a song to the assembled media – ended up on every nationwide news bulletin by teatime. At today’s announcement, the excellent Portico Quartet did the same by using what appeared to be a £24.99 Homebase barbeque as percussion (they claimed it was a Swedish instrument called a Hang). No chance, it must be said, of such sudden fame befalling South London dubstep practioner Burial, who keeps his identity secret. Quite how long his anomymity will last, now that the plangent, cinematic sound-sketches of his second album Untrue have come to wider attention, is anyone’s guess. Elsewhere, it’s a list that divides between resurgent emissaries of left-field rock and strong young female artists. Among the former, even the Mercury’s propensity to willfulness wouldn’t have dared extend to omitting Radiohead’s endlessly repeatable In Rainbows. Radiohead may have made the more daring album – but for synergy of restrained lyrical confessionals and consistently breathtaking arrangements, Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid is probably marginally more than its match. What this year’s list seems to have finally formalized, however, is that the strongest emerging songwriting talents are to be found in young female artists. On the face of it, Laura Marling and Adele would seem to have a lot in common. Just over a year separates them, and both their albums suggest the use of failed relationships as creative fuel. If only for the fact that Adele still sounds like a work in progress, Marling is a smarter bet for outright victory. Alas I Cannot Swim – Marling’s album of intricate literate chamber-pop vignettes – would be remarkable from a songwriter of any age, let along one who recorded these songs aged 17. Also welcome on the shortlist are Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, whose bleak baroque reconfiguration of English folk music has resulted in an excellent second album The Bairns. If this year’s Mercury goes to a woman for the first time since 2002, it will probably go to Estelle’s Shine. All the components are in place. British black music has fared comparatively poorly in recent years – and, having relocated to New York and secured a worldwide deal after being dropped by her UK label, she’s also made a record that bears repeated listening. Amid all the debate and counter-debate concerning what makes a worthy winner, that latter criterion (see past winners: Antony & The Johnsons, Roni Size, M People) can sometimes get forgotten. Not this year though. Whichever way you look at it, the inescapable conclusion is that British music is in better shape than it has been for years. http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article4378109.ece
  14. As Israeli city Tel Aviv gears up to its 100th anniversary in 2009, Jewtastic can reveal that local government bosses have set their sights on Duran Duran to perform a headlining concert as well as applying for permission to use the group’s instrumental song Tel Aviv as a theme for the city. According to a Tel Aviv Municipality city insider, Duran Duran have emerged as the top act for a celebrate Tel Aviv concert being planned in 2009. “We have been thinking about Duran Duran for a number of years and with 2009 being the 100th anniversatry of Tel Aviv, now is the right time to get them here,” the insider told Jewtastic. “We are also looking at a song for the city and the group have the perfect anthem with their song Tel Aviv. There are plenty of songs that celebrate cities like New York and London and Duran Duran’s Tel Aviv is the type of tune we would like for our city.” Promoters of the concert would have to be certain that the multi-million shekel fee paid to the band would provide a return and also draw the crowds. A concert this month by indie artist Morrissey had be scaled down following disappointing ticket sales which left promoters choosing a smaller venue for the star. In 2007, Duran Duran were linked to an advertising campaign for the city which planned to run an international TV campaign to attract tourists in 2008. “We were looking at Duran Duran then but there was no budget as the focus was on Israel 60 and not any specific city,” the insider said. “Now with Tel Aviv 100 we think there is a good association with Duran Duran.” Other acts who are said to be on the shortlist of headlining artists for the concert include: Coldplay, Counting Crowes, Maroon 5 and Madonna. http://www.jewtastic.com/posts/45364
  15. Coldplay to be the first to play new O2 at the Point British superstars Coldplay will be performing a monster gig at the revamped Point Theatre this Christmas. The Herald can reveal that Chris Martin and his chart-topping bandmates will be belting out the hits on the stage of the €850m development. In the first concert confirmed for the new venue, which has been renamed the O2, the record-breaking group has just added a Dublin date to their worldwide tour and will now play here on December 21. And tickets costing up to €59.80 including booking fee for their fully-seated gig in the 14,000-seater venue are expected to snapped up like hotcakes when they go on sale this Friday at 9.0am. "This is going to be one of the biggest concerts of the year and there's no better place to have it than in the new O2 building," said a music source. "It was a huge coup getting them to come over and 'christen' the venue with this one-off performance. "They're one of the most popular bands in the world right now and promoters shouldn't find it too hard to shift the tickets," the source added. "When Coldplay announced they were performing at the Odyssey Arena, they sold out within minutes. It will be the same thing for their Dublin concert." Charts Currently riding high in the UK and global music charts with their fourth album Viva la Vida, they have enjoyed five weeks at number one here. Their reign finally came to an end this week after they were knocked off the top spot by DJ Basshunter. Now on the road as part of their worldwide tour, they're performing in the US and Canada over the coming weeks then playing a sell-out gig in Tokyo and prestigious venues across Europe, before they take to the stage at the O2 arena. The mobile phone company has joined forces with global entertainment providers Live Nation as part of a multi-million euro re-naming deal. - SHOWBUSINESS EDITOR http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/music/coldplay-to-be-the-first-to-play-new-o2-at-the-point-1438139.html
  16. 'Dark Knight' Christian Bale releases statement about assault charges Attorneys representing "The Dark Knight" star Christian Bale have released a statement on their client's arrest Tuesday morning for assault charges. "Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister. "Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. "At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale." So unless mum and sis are talking, we may never know what this was all about. Bale is a notoriously private actor, and I'm betting this mystery will never be fully solved. Families are complicated, sibling relationships are tricky and childhood stuff never really goes away. Just ask Bruce Wayne. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2008/07/dark-knight-chr.html

  20. Wooooo thanks for the Oracle!! I have asked if this show is real!! Coz they still aren't listing it on Coldplay.com
  21. I thought the Charmed ones vanquished the Oracle, and she's been replaced by the Seer? Does the second IZOD show, which isn't listed on Coldplay.com but the ticket agencies are selling tickets for, actually exist?
