It's also, as you can probably imagine, the perfect setting for eagerly hatching wild ideas and schemes. And so on one such blustery and cold night in September two friends, Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin decided (whilst in wildly animated conversation about music and probably also well on their way to needing a taxi home) that they would make a country album. As with so many ideas that come about on a belly full of Jameson's, in the cold light of day it did not seem like such a good plan. Two English men trying to sing like Hank Williams was definitely a recipe for disaster. The whole thing was forgotten about in the time it took to recover from the headache that morning. But the headache was to return. Out of the blue a couple of months later Tim emailed Jesse a rough demo of 'Departure'. Not wanting to be outdone, Jesse vollied back a demo of 'Annie Ford'. Before they knew it there were half a dozen songs and without really putting much planning into it, the idea to make a record was resurrected. Enlisting the help of friends from various other bands the newly formed group went into Eastcote studios in London at the snowy start of this year. With production wizard Emery Dobyns patiently manning the controls, the idea was to record as much of the album live as possible, in true country style. For the finishing touches, they experimented with whatever extra noises they felt like (cue dustbin lids, anvils, bullhorns and heavily distorted theremins) and a supporting cast of friends who would regularly stop by and add their ideas, whether invited or not. The end of the recording sessions marked the end of the first chapter of the story. The band had revelled in the joy of making music without any motive other than just doing what they loved. As Mt Desolation begins its second chapter, the fun and excitement of making the music remains, except now instead of being confined to a recording studio it's being taken on the road to share with anyone who wants a part of it. 7. After 15-plus years as the frontman of Scottish rockers Travis, Fran Healy is making his solo debut with 'Wreckorder,' due out in North America October 5. While it's nerve-wracking for many artists to step out on their own, Healy is very calm about having his name alone on the marquees. "This album, compared to all the other albums, I must be honest, is exactly the same," he tells Spinner. "All the Travis albums are my songs, so each album is just a collection of songs. The songs with me are always so personal I always looked at it like that." Every time a band member goes solo, there are the requisite questions about the group potentially breaking up or bandmates not being happy with the move. Well, Travis fans can relax -- Healy actually got permission from the rest of the band to step out on his own. "We came to the end of our tour last year and everyone was kind of burnt out and wanted a break, but I didn't really want to stop," he says. "So, I then asked everyone if I could do a record." For him, the move to go temporarily solo was a very organic one. "When you play in a band for 16 years, you get kind of institutionalized a little bit. You're like, 'Oh, this is fine in here cause you've got a great bass player, a brilliant guitarist, a great drummer,'" he says. "But creatively, there comes a point where it naturally will occur to the main creative person in a band, 'Hey, I would like to try and work with maybe another musician. I want to try and do a duet with them or I want to do my own thing,' so for me it was just a very logical step." As relaxed as he is about 'Wreckorder,' Healy admits this is a different experience after six albums with Travis. "Being a solo person, I don't know what to expect yet. I have no idea," he says. Still, he doesn't think it will end up being all that different than any of his other works. "When you put your album out, whether it's for Travis or myself, some people will like it, some people will hate it, some people will think it's alright." For any fans eager to hear Healy's new material, he's kicking off a tour with Keane on Tuesday, July 20, in Oakland.
  8. LMFAO. Are you fuckin kidding me ? wilco>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>arcade fire
  9. Making fun of the Killers and/or Brandon Flowers has started to become like shooting the lead singer of a pretty successful band in a very tiny barrel. I mean, at this point, it's pretty well established that the dude has only one trick (mixing Duran Duran with Bruce Springsteen) and he never actually says anything in his lyrics, but suggesting such will lead Killers fans to lambast you publicly*. So, okay, the video for "Crossfire." Yep, vague lyrics. Yep, big choruses. Yep, Charlize Theron. Yep, expensive budget. Yep, ninjas. Yep, vague religious overtones**. In short, if you like the Killers, prepare your pants for tightening. If not, see yourself out. Brandon Flowers' Flamingo is due out in September. *- Even though I suspect it's because they know it to be true. I guess their only consolation is that he's still better than the dude from Kings of Leon who is still better than the dude from the Bravery. **- One of those things is better than the other. It's not the chorus.

  23. Kings of Leon: 'Fun, Beach-Inspired' New Album Tennessee rockers Kings of Leon will hit the road this summer on 32-date North American tour, including a stop at their home state's Bonnaroo music festival June 11. What can fans expect from the SPIN cover boys live in their own backyard? Lots of new material from their follow-up to 2008's Grammy Award-winning release Only By the Night! "The record is coming along great," drummer Nathan Followill said during a Bonnaroo press conference today. "It will be tough to not play the whole [new album] at Bonnaroo. We're going to try to be very selective of what we play, but there will definitely be some new tunes." KOL have been in the studio working on their new album since the beginning of April -- but this time around, the boys switched things up. "[it was the] first time we ever recorded in New York City and we thought we'd come out with a darker record because we'd done all our records in either Nashville or Los Angeles where it's a little more chilled out," Followill says. "[but] I'll be damned if we didn't go in there and make a fun record! It's got songs that are beach-y and songs that are a little more like our Youth & Young Manhood days. We're super excited. It will be interesting to see how well received it is," he added.
