What is your favourite Coldplay song today?
It's really funny how nearly everyone agrees that their favourite Coldplay song changes with the weather. The band I love best after CP is Travis and my fave song of theirs (Luv) - closely followed by Why Does it Always Rain on Me?, Driftwood and Turn - NEVER alters. But with Coldplay my favourites depend so much on my state of mind or what is happening to me. Anyway, most of the time it is Don't Panic, but yesterday it was See You Soon and today it is What If? No matter how I am feeling, there is ALWAYS a Coldplay song which seems to have been written for me.:)

Only your Fav's of Coldplay
Hmmm - good question. As I am a relatively new fan of Coldplay, I haven't heard/seen everything of theirs, so can't give an answer to number 5, but the others are: My fave song is - Arrrgh - all of them according to my mood! No, I think Don't Panic...or What If...or Trouble!! My fave b-side/Unreleased song is I'll See You Soon My fave video clip is probably The Scientist or Trouble My fave lyric is, 'All of us are done for' (don't ask me why - too complicated!) And you asked for anything else, so:- 5. My fave album is Parachutes 6. The most gorgeous band member is Guy, closely followed by Chris!

Annoying Commercials.
Well, Sky, don't know what your commercials are like in Canada, but here 99% of them are incredibly cheesy and moronic. I just prefer to not watch them. I worked out a while ago that the average person in the UK watches over 200 hours of adverts a year - that is around 14,000 hours in a lifetime!!! No thanks - just think of all the Coldplay I could be listening to!!:)
-
Best Looking Person You've Seen
Sorry - am no good at posting pics but it is easy to find this guy on the Big Brother website. It is MIKEY - who was, to my horror, evicted from BB on Friday. Argggh - he is without doubt the most gorgeous man I have ever seen. I used to think that was Guy Berryman, but have changed my mind! Mikey has floppy dark hair, massive brown eyes like a spaniel's, the loveliest teeth and smile EVER, and this kind of mixture of awareness of how gorgeous he is combined with a kind of humility. Delectable.

Annoying Commercials.
I detest all of them! They are so patronising or stupid and make out that the average viewer has a mental age of a six year old. I hate the ones where they show 'family life' and 'couples' as if everything was so idyllically perfect all the time - there is one with a guy making a phone call for a loan, I think to a firm called Picture This or something where his wife is camcording him and he is playing with a football. Grrr - makes me need a fix of Coldplay to recover! To be honest, I watch very few adverts as I keep the remote control in my hand and turn them off most of the time. Very useful those remotes!
-
Top 3 from each album?
Arrgggh, sooo hard to just find three! But after much thought, these are my faves:- Parachutes 1. Trouble 2. Don't Panic 3. Sparks A Rush of Blood to the Head 1. In My Place 2. The Scientist 3. Amsterdam X and Y 1. What If? 2. Fix You 3. X and Y

Does anyone understand "See You Soon"?
I had never heard See You Soon before I was bought the Coldplay Live 2003 DVD for my birthday (I am a relatively new Coldplay addict!). I can't say I have really thought that much about the lyrics yet, but was bowled over by how beautiful the song was. Just mesmerising. In fact, the whole DVD made me love songs that I previously hadn't liked that much such as God Put a Smile Upon Your Face. I also hadn't heard Moses before and thought it was brilliant. Now I just need to wean myself off watching part of the DVD every day!:)

What the hell is it about??
Chris said he isn't a lyricist and that's why Coldplay CD inserts never have the lyrics on them. I wish they did, as I always want to know exactly what is being sung. Chris is too humble and self-effacing - he may not be a Keats or Wordsworth, but when the lyrics and the music combine, there is something which is just so profound and touches your soul!

How much influence Coldplay has on you?
I posted my message in reply to the question before realising that the majority of posts were about something totally unrelated to it. I'm not against people chatting at all, but think they should go into the chat forum and keep this one for answers relating to the thread. JMHO!

How much influence Coldplay has on you?
Coldplay have a MASSIVE influence on me. My health isn't good and I have to stay at home a lot - it gets incredibly depressing and wearisomely boring. But somehow when I put on one of my Coldplay CDs or DVDs, I feel better. To me, Chris somehow gets the message across that he's in 'it' (ie whatever we're going through) with us. The message that life sucks a lot of the time BUT 'we live in a beautiful world' is to me what Coldplay are about. The only negative is that I think I am in danger of becoming obsessed with the band! I used to think I loved Travis, and when I saw them live three years ago, felt I was in heaven. But Coldplay are for some reason I can't put my finger on, simply ADDICTIVE. I literally can't get enough of them, and whenever I'm particularly down, I HAVE to get my fix of a couple of songs at least.:\ Well, there are worse addictions I suppose! And so long as they stop me from chucking myself off a bridge, I'll keep with them!!:)

for the superficial coldpplay fans ;)
Just don't get the point in a thread like this. What's it supposed to be about? I like to think Coldplay fans are intelligent, but you wouldn't think so from all this rubbish! Just posts with one emoticon or a silly comment no one understands?? Think I'll join a Westlife appreciation site or something!:D

Coldplay members are NOT 'working class'!
KM, don't know where you come from, but no way are kids whose parents are teachers, accountants etc, (as Coldplays are) deemed to be working class in Britain. It's hard to describe class without sounding 'classist' but the fact is that the concept of working class in the UK is generally that the fathers are 'blue-collar workers' - ie they do manual work such as plumbing, bricklaying, building etc, spend a lot of their time down at the local pub, and go to Benidorm or Tenerife for their hols! Whereas middle class parents usually work in the professions - ie are teachers, doctors, solicitors and so on, have interests like playing golf or singing in the local choir, and go to France or Tuscany for their holidays! This is VERY steriotypical I know, but there is actually quite a lot of truth in it too. But no way are the Coldplay guys from working class families, particularly Chris. Have you seen the website of his school, Sherborne school in Dorset? This is one of the poshest and most expensive private boarding schools in the country, and costs over £7,000 PER TERM!!! Three more of the 'Old Boys' who went there were Jeremy Irons, Jon Pertwee (used to be Doctor Who) and John le Mesurier (Wilson in Dad's Army). bedofroses says how she saw an interview with Chris about two years ago, describing the middle-class background he comes from, and how proud he is of it. I think there's far too much judging people according to the family they were born into - OK, Chris comes from a privileged family but that's life. It's like some people are good looking and others aren't, some have good health and others don't. It's an unfair world, but IMO, Chris and the other guys have used their privileged upbringings to wonderful effect!! Anyone who's interested in Chris's school (he is mentioned in the Old Boys section!) can see it on:- www.sherborne.org Click on General, then on Famous Alumni, and you will see a pic of Chris in all his beauty!!

Coldplay members are NOT 'working class'!
an_cat, if you read the first post - ie mine! - you will see what the thread was about. It referred to a point made in one of the articles shown in the Latest News section, which said that the Coldplay members are 'four nice working class boys'. And I was pointing out that this seems to be something which is automatically assumed about British bands - that they are working class, whereas all the guys in CP come from very well-to-do, middle-class families, with Chris going to a very posh and expensive private boarding school. nelly, I understand the class thing very much as you live in Cheshire. I live near Manchester and know how prevalent it is there. Actually I don't think money has anything to do with class. It's more a kind of worldview, a way of thinking, of background etc. I used to work as a classroom assistant at my local primary school and although 90% of the families were what I suppose would be thought of as traditional, decent working class/lower middle-class, there was a section who lived on a council estate about half a mile away who in general treated their kids appallingly. Half the time, the kids didn't know who their fathers were, and were used to one man after another moving in for six months, beating up the mother, then leaving again. There is no way THESE type would have given their children piano lessons, Firthy and Nettie!! We had huge trouble with the kids from this estate - with their behaviour, reading, attendance, everything. When we spoke to the parents and asked them to help with their children's reading etc, they looked at us with amazement and just said, 'That's your ****ing job!' Yes, Erin, the British class system can seem odd to people from other countries, but it is getting less obvious, as most people have much more money than they used to have, and what interests me is how many of the traditional working class people in our area send their children to private secondary school. Our local state comprehensives are very poor, but there is a brilliant private school about three miles away, and now, because so many 'ordinary' people have much more expendible income than their parents did, they are choosing to send their kids to a private school if they are bright. And I say good luck to them. I know of lots of people who are shocked at the idea of choosing the best school for your child, but in the end, it's their money, and no one blinks an eyelid if someone decides to spend it on a fast car, state of the art DVD system, conservatory or foreign holidays etc. The suggeston that every school can be equally good if enough money is poured into it by the government is bullshit. That's not how it works - it all starts with the family. BTW, thanks Bijeli for saying my thread was interesting! That's what I love about this site - because all us Coldplay fans are so intelligent (well, most of us!) we can discuss all kinds of things. Until they get spammed of course!!:D

what's your favorite part of any coldplay song?
I love so many parts of so many songs I'd be here forever, but will be back after checking out the times of the songs. For now, I adore the verses of 'What If?', the rocky bass bit in 'The Scientist', the whole of 'Sparks' (am I the only one who loves this song?), the bits where Chris sings 'Yeah?' in 'Square One' and, like so many of you, the end bit of 'Politik'. Oh the things I have to do for this forum - got to listen to all my Coldplay albums now to find out my other fave parts!

Evolution vs. Creation
Re why your teacher says science backs up creation KM, that is probably because she's a Biblical Fundamentalist. There are millions of them out there, especially in the US - gullible, brainwashed idiots who believe that every single word in the Bible is LITERALLY true, eg a six day Creation, that the world is only 6-8,000 years old (and therefore that the devil has invented fossils to kid mankind!!) I get some of my most hilarious moments from reading Fundamentalist websites - there is even one where they discuss (with completely straight faces!) how Noah disposed of the manure on the ark!!! And hey, you guys who say you wouldn't touch this issue - we are Coldplay fans, and therefore highly intelligent, rational people who can discuss ANYTHING! Sure, we might offend someone, but that's life - we shouldn't avoid any possibly contentious subject. We don't want threads which only deal with who has the sexiest pectoral muscles, Guy or Chris! For anyone who is interested in what some of these Biblical Fundies think, see:- www.ldolphin.org/cisflood www.av1611.org (and for a positively hilarious article from this site, type into Google Terry Watkins truth about hell). According to this article, hell is at the centre of the earth and has been seen by scientists!!! There are loads of Creationist websites too KM if you want to read up about what they think - for instance, www.creationsim.org "Questions of science, science and progress, do not speak as loud as my heart"
-
Evolution vs. Creation
KM, Science doesn't back up Creation without any kind of evolution. I don't get why some Christians are so hung up on evolution, as though it disproves the existence of God. I believe in God myself, but I also believe in evolution. It takes place in front of our very eyes if we look. For instance, even just a couple of decades ago, robins found it very hard to perch in a certain position, and did nearly all their feeding on the ground. But because bird feeders have become so popular, robins have developed a way of perching onto the feeders. We have always put out peanuts and sunflower seeds during the winter, and even in just the past five years we have found that robins find it much easier to hold onto the feeders than they used to, and are quite comfortable feeding that way. I believe in Creation AND evolution - ie that yes, perhaps humans did evolve from apes, but that God also 'added' something to make them unique from all other animals. I mean there are so many differences between man and other animal species - we can laugh and cry and feel happy and sad and look back to the past, and forward to the future, but above all we have a knowledge of right and wrong which no other creature has. If a cat kills a bird, it isn't doing 'wrong' because it doesn't understand what 'wrong' is. As far as I know, all the Coldplay guys believe in God (certainly Chris does) but not in a Fundamentalist, obsessive way. They have many questions, which is what X and Y is meant to be about. Saying that life consists of a combination of wonderful things and terrible ones. Yes, 'we live in a beautiful world' - but it certainly sucks at times!!

Can 5,000 Evangelical Teens Be Wrong?
Although this article has little to do with Coldplay, I found it fascinating (thanks Ian!) I have done a great deal of research on American Fundamentalism and I personally believe this movement is one of the greatest forces for evil around. The leaders believe (yes, some of them really do) that God has called them to take over the world and make - and I mean MAKE- everyone into a Christian, to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ. Some of the top leaders such as Pat Robertson, Benny Hinn, and Paul Crouch (who owns the biggest Christian TV Channel on the network, TBN) have links with George Bush (who is an extreme Fundamentalist), and their powers are enormous. I am sure that many of you have the God Channel, TBN etc on Satellite. If you are ever bored, then switch on for half an hour and watch the terrifying (or hilarious, whichever way you look at it!) antics on these channels. The followers of the Televangelists are so brainwashed (and braindead) that they literally believe that God fills peoples' teeth with gold, drops angels feathers from heaven or, according to the 70 odd year old, purple-haired Barbie doll lookalike, Jan Crouch (one of the funniest sights on TV) that he can 'heal' washing machines or raise pet chickens from the dead!! California (where Gwynneth comes from!) is where this evil movement began, and it is spreading like wildfire, including to Britain. Apparently around 20% of the students at Manchester University, situated just a few miles from where I live, are Evangelicals, and go around the Uni handing out their scary propaganda - eg, 'Unless you have accepted Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you are going to hell' kind of thing. These kids use their belief that they are the 'chosen ones' to get the kind of kick and buzz which so many teenagers today are trying to get. It matters little whether their hero is Marilyn Manson or Jesus Christ - it's just a way of making themselves feel special. Keep well away from Evangelical Fundamentalism. It's dangerous. And if anyone is interested, have a look at this website:- www.av1611.org Or best of all, type into Google Terry Watkins Truth about Hell. You will enjoy a feast of hilarity!!

Coldplay members are NOT 'working class'!
Quite agree Square_One - it doesn't matter in the sense of meaning that what class you are from makes you superior or inferior. But it is a factual error, which I thought needed correcting just as much as if the article had said that the Coldplay members were in their 70s and were born in Timbuktoo!

Coldplay members are NOT 'working class'!
Sorry Firthy - didn't mean to be offensive about the piano thing, but in general, my experience shows that it is far more likely that a child from the middle class will have piano lessons as a child. My husband comes from a working class background, and when he met me (from the middle-class), he had never known a single person who could play the piano, and he was 22. His mother believes such things are a waste of time and money and wouldn't have considered letting any of her four kids learn to play an instrument. Totally agree with you about the attitude towards British bands, but not about the likelihood of a working class child having piano lessons! Don't know whether you've ever been to Manchester, but it is unlikely that some of the kids in areas like Salford or Moss Side have even played the recorder, let alone the piano! For one thing, it isn't 'cool', and that is the most important thing in areas likes this. We are always hearing of extra bright kids at state comprehensives getting bullied till they sometimes attempt suicide because of all the stick they come in for. I myself was laughed at by a lot of my husband's mates when they learned I could play the piano. Soooo posh, according to them! But yes, you are right about the association between British bands and the lower classes, possibly in most cases true. But Coldplay have shown you can be a brilliant band (as well as having a very strict social conscience) even though you might have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth!!

Coldplay members are NOT 'working class'!
Regarding the article entitled, 'Fixed in fans' hearts: Coldplay on tour', I am annoyed by the line, 'a quartet of nice young working class boys...':x I have frequently read this - that the band are 'working class.' It seems to be considered an essential attribute in modern day Britain that anyone who is famous (whether a footballer, actor, politician, or especially a rock star) to be from the lower class. As though being working class is something to be proud of, rather than something you can't help. The fact is that NONE of the guys in Coldplay are working class. They all come from extremely well-to-do families, their parents being teachers, accountants etc, and Chris attending one of the most prestigious (and expensive!) private boarding schools (Sherborne college) in the country. He was born in what is possibly the most 'middle-class' county in Britain - Devon - which has virtually no industrial areas at all. Please note that I am not critisicising the working class - it's just that I am a bit tired of the inverted snobbery of the media who automatically presume that if someone is a talented musician, then they MUST be from the working class. Yes, Oasis are, Travis are, many bands are - but Coldplay are NOT! And to be quite honest, it is unlikely that Chris would play the piano so beautifully HAD he been, as the vast majority of pianists who learn to play in their childhood come from middle class homes. Just pointing out the facts!

Post-Concert depression
elizabeth, I think you are expressing an emotion which is the lot of mankind (with certain fortunate exceptions like coldplay_steph!) So often, when we look forward to something as much as you did to seeing Coldplay, we hit the ground with a massive bump afterwards and ordinary life seems so humdrum and dull. I am fascinated by psychology and personality types - eg melancholy, sanguine (optimistic) etc and have done a lot of research on these things. I am definitely of a melancholic temperament myself - ie very reflective, prone to depression etc, and in my experience, many Coldplay fans are the same. I have personally never been able to understand how people can come home from their holidays on a high, talking of feeling so much better, so much more able to face life etc. I absolutely DREAD that last day when I have to return home and sometimes wonder whether it's worth going away at all because of that last horrible day!! Same with the concept of 'happy memories' - to me, a memory is only happy if the circumstance remains. How can you feel happy about something which is gone forever?? JMHO - but don't worry elizabeth - your feeling is totally normal and hopefully you will get over your gloom and be able to start looking forward to the NEXT Coldplay concert!! "Who has not writhed at past joy To know the change and feel it When there is none to heal it?" People's preconceptions
Hear hear, Coldplay_Steph! I completely agree with you when you say, 'I think at first it was just ignorance. They didn't quite 'get' the music (or weren't intellegent enough to understand it's beauty:rolleyes: ) so didn't give it a chance.' It has been my experience that the more thoughtful, reflective and intelligent you are, the more likely you are to appreciate Coldplay. Well, you have to be to relate to their songs. They are dealing with deep, meaningful, truthful, profound things - and those idiots who say the band are 'depressing' are the kind who think life should be one big joke and one long party. That's not what Coldplay fans believe. They can identify with the melancholic, exquisite, sincere beauty of Coldplay. :) needs fixing "Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know" (Ernest Hemingway)

Who would you like to see naked?
Hear hear, Lera - I am sure if I saw even Chris or Guy (who, BTW, I think is the most beautiful man in the world) with no clothes on, I would be put off for life! Naked men are - well, ughh. And women - well, we are surrounded by them, in newspapers, movies, magazines - is it any wonder we 'ordinary' girls can't compete?? My grandparents had only ever seen each other naked - perhaps one of the reasons they stayed married for over fifty years??

Chris Martin's hair, and when he will cut it
Well, don't know whether any of you live in Britain, but by sheer chance I was lucky enough to see Coldplay performing on a Saturday morning TV programme called CDUK (a crappy prog, but of course the guys were BRILLIANT.) And Chris's hair was SHORT!! Not as nice as it used to be, but infinitely better than of late! CP performed 'What If?' and though the appearance wasn't live, it had only been recorded a week or two before, so Chris's hair must have been cut since the Brit Awards! Phew - we could see all his beauty again!! Let's hope he's learned from his mistake and never lets his hair get so unkempt again! Leave that to the ageing rockers like Bono, Chris!!
-
Youre all fucking idiots
To be honest Lera, I don't think Chris can always help it. The media are onto him all the time like tarantulas. I also think he often comes out with stuff because he doesn't know what to say. Despite what some people think, he doesn't have a massive ego, and you can tell when you hear him talk sometimes that he is really quite shy. He just wants 'somebody listening to what he says!' I think he feels deeply the things he writes and is speaking personally when he says, 'Is there anybody out there who is lost and hurt and lonely too?'
