You dont know about it? New Zealand's newest tourist attraction -- the giant icebergs off the South Island's east coast -- may soon be over. Tourists have been paying up to $500 for helicopter rides out to the icebergs which have been spotted as close as 60km to the mainland. Icebergs have not been seen this close to New Zealand since 1931. But the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research oceanographer Dr Mike Williams said yesterday that warmer temperatures were taking their toll on the icebergs which were fast disappearing. Sightseers yesterday noted huge chunks breaking off the flotilla of icebergs.

I saw this on the news, apparently the Australian Antarctic Division are building a new runway in Antarctica. The $46.3 million blue-ice runway 70km inland from Casey Station in Antarctica is in its final year of construction. The ice will be topped with a compacted white snow covering to prevent the runway becoming a skating rink for aircraft, and to stop the ice foundation melting. When the runway is completed, the two-week trip from Hobart by ship over fierce ocean swells will be replaced by a five-hour plane ride. More scientists will be able to come and go in a summer season, and fewer people will suffer the almost unavoidable seasickness and delays associated with the long sea haul. This will help you recruit more members guys! It will be easier to get there now, especially if you want more aussie members lol
