Alas, I'm from Manchester in England, born there and everything, my dad's Scottish though. Manchester was bombed by the IRA, a nominally Catholic organisation, back in 1996, I was there, and I saw the city centre turned into a ruin. We rebuilt and now Manchester is great. All religions have foaming at the mouth psychopaths, you just gotta ignore them. And well, its not the situation in Israel. Cos Mancunians are from Manchester, many of them have lived there for generations and aren't in the mood for leaving, and we aren't in the mood for fighting either.

Thats my point, its not that many people compared to other causes of death in Israel. Just accept it.

I hardly think enflaming the situation is a good way to respond though I don't recall the civil rights movement in America invading any states or killing that many people. Just lots of protests.

There's a subtle difference between a plot being disrupted and it being foiled. If its been disrupted we shouldn't be at the critical threat level. That's just causing panic. Three airplanes over that Atlantic? Thats about six hundred deaths, which in terms of mass murder, is quite easily imaginable. This chap's blowing it out of proportion.

Okay, Lebanon and Palestine both have GDPs that are fractions of that of Israel, if a cure for cancer was found, its pretty unlikely they could afford it. The oil spill caused by Israel bombs is going to be a big carcinogenic thing causing cancer for hundreds probably thousands of Lebanese, it was directly caused by Israel. There are ways to fight cancer and there are means to research new ways to tackle cancer. I dunno how many Israelis are killed by Hezbollah bombs every year, I can't find the statistics for it, but I'm going to guess its about 50. So they're going to war over a threat that's a tiny fraction of the deaths caused by cancer. The current conflict has shown that Israel can try their damnedest, but they can't defeat Hezbollah, they can't make Lebanon love them using bombs.

Anyway, back on topic, according to the Israeli Bureau of Statistics, about 10,000 Israelis die from cancer every year, for Americans thats the same loss of life as three 9/11 attacks, or taking into account the relative sizes of the countries, its equivalent to about one hundred and fifty 9/11 attacks. Thats cancer that is. A far bigger worry than Hezbollah rockets.

Where I work, when the company is working out how much things cost, they say that one hour is worth £15 per person, for internationalism's sake thats $30 per hour or $15 for half an hour If I mess about or do nothing for half an hour, the company is $15 worse off than if I was doing something. Now imagine if every single commerical air passenger had to waste half an hour per flight. Now lets say that on average an American goes on four flights a year and has to wait around doing security checks and bomb sniffing suitcases for half an hour for each flight. Thats $60 per person. The population of the USA is about 300,000,000. So the security checks brought in because of 9/11 has cost the US economy $18,000,000,000 per year in wasted time. In words thats EIGHTEEN BILLION DOLLARS that the US could be making each year if they didn't have all the security checks on airplanes. Why oh why would the government do that on purpose?

Sorry I don't buy that either. According to the Israeli Bureau of Statistics causes of death document http://www1.cbs.gov.il/shnaton56/st03_27x.pdf I'm still reading it but it looks like heart disease is quite a killer - 53 deaths per 100,000 per year, (population 7,000,000) so thats about 3,700 deaths a year due to heart disease. Lets say that going on the current conflict, the number of people injurred is, I'm being generous, twice the number killed, so for a month's full on war, that's about 200 so if this went on for a year, that would be 2000 injurred. Still means twice as many people have died from heart disease per year.

I was just flicking through the past few pages of this thread and another thought came to me. It was this, how in the bible the old testamanet, the jews are like promised Israel. Everyone in the area was an Arab of one tribe or another, but they all live there. By my reckoning of religions, and I'm no religious scholar, it wasn't until 2000 years ago that there were any Christians at all, everyone who lived there was still an arab. and the Muslim religion didn't come about as koran followers until a bit later aftr that. All the same everyone who lived round that neck of the woods was an arab. Everyone who lived round there, Jew, Christian or Muslim, they were all pretty much arabs. The distinction between jews and arabs is only a more recent phenomenom brought on by mass migrations of people. You still haven't come up with any statistics for how many people they've killed per year for the last few years, unless its on some other thread. And still, compared with cars, who kill on average 450 people a year in Israel, and the numbers go up every year. And there are thousands of cars in Israel already. Cars are a greater threat to Israeli lives. And Israel already has far more nuclear weapons than Iran. Israel is a bigger threat to its neighbours than they are to it. And now I think about it. Israel has thousands of fighters and rockets and tanks and guns. And if everyone between the ages of 17 and 45 there has to serve as an army reservist for 30 days a year, that's like an army of hundreds of thousands. What was your point?

They weren't really a credible threat to Israel though. They were killing very few people compared to the other major killers in Israel such as cars, cancer, aids, etc. Not worth either the war or the environmental impact, or the bad PR that Israel is getting. Not all Muslims are extremeists, its only a minority of them, like in any religion, there are crazy nutjobs and there are all the rest. What you ought to do is ignore the nutjobs, give them as little time as possible, and get on with your lives.
