  1. you people are the wanker/cretins - bono and chris have met many times and are friends. he's taking the piss - it's a joke, totally harmless. and he compliments him at the same time. celebrities really do treat each other the same way real people do, so don't get all defensive and compare the two because they're both great and plus chris is a cretin, as is bono, nobody can deny that.

  3. ok, first off I detest Keane and all of their musical output thus far. I hate every aspect of them: their name, Tom Chaplin's wannabe attitude and ridiculous live performances and overpoliteness, and mindboggling lack of style. right, now i've vented that, i totally agree that they are probably trying to copy Coldplay, purely because it got Coldplay lots of #1s/sales/ok reviews. however, there is the fact that Keane were working on their album around the same time as Coldplay and probably didn't know what each other were doing. but, in all honesty, every generation's gonna have great bands who start out as wannabe acts. you can trace it: Nirvana started out as wannabe Pixies, Radiohead started as wannabe Nirvana, Coldplay started as wannabe Radiohead, Keane/Snow Patrol are wannabe Coldplay. who knows, maybe ten years from now they'll be reverred as the Pink Floyd of the noughties, i just don't see them as such now.
  4. why oh why would they ever use Hype Williams? this is his first video outside the hip-hop/r&b world and it's been dreadfully executed. honestly, i think the iTunes advert conveyed more emotion and wow factor in 30 seconds than this one does in 240. but the 2nd one is excellent
  5. oh my that was hilarious at least he handled it better than Robbie Williams
  6. 34 - Strawberry Swing + 25 - 42 23 - Cemeteries Of London - 22 - Viva La Vida 21 - Death And All His Friends
  7. i had a really strange dream the other night which was the video for Strawberry Swing it was set in that same period as the album cover in Paris, sort of evoking the storming of Bastille. it had nothing to do with the song but it was beautiful (in my head at least) - lots of panoramic shots and colour. if it gets made my life will be complete
  8. no, that's true, there isn't much competition - X&Y was at #1 for 4 weeks, but it sold 900k over that period and was unseated by James Blunt. It's just gonna take one new major release to topple it
  9. LIT: the rush as the drums/bass come in COL: the first build-up when Chris sings "so we rode down to the river" Lost!: that guitar riff towards the end, just perfect 42: the "thought you might be a ghost" section with the handclaps - so powerful LIJ: the final instrumental when all reaches a bit of a crescendo ROL: none, I think the whole thing's equally messy Yes: when Chris makes that little moaning "Hey!" after the first chorus CSC: Johnny's intense solo VLV: the final chorus VH: the build-up after the first chorus SS: when the acoustic strum comes in towards the end DAAHF: the final refrain ("I don't want a battle from beginning to end" etc.) Escapist: the fade out at the end (and I love the way it just morphs back into LIT when it's on repeat)
  10. sebrat replied to sam stown's topic in Coldplay
aren't they supposed to send impartial people to these concerts? this review is contradictory and illogical - I really would've expected better from NME
  11. I have to disagree on that - they do adverts in US publications, plus on US TV, US websites, far from zero effort
  12. Strawberry Swing - sounds so good on noise canceling headphones with high bass response :D
  13. we should also bare in mind that Oasis have never had a #1 album in America (even Be Here Now, purportedly their biggest ever, only got to #2) and Coldplay stayed at #1 for 3 weeks with X&Y. Then, Oasis have only had one top ten in America, while Coldplay have had 2 including 1 #1. I think that, as a worldwide phenomenon, Coldplay are bigger. In fact, they're about the biggest rock band since The Beatles IMHO, and unlike Oasis they don't try and emulate them with every song.
  14. ^ so almost exactly the same as X&Y? i guess that's cool ...
  15. this new U2 album is gonna be stellar, I hope - having a good producer makes all the difference (as we now know) and the only other U2 albums produced by Eno and Lanois are Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby (my 3 favorites of theirs). And it seems that, despite their ambitions for shitloads of money, critical acclaim and Grammies, they haven't lost their focus/touch. I have to admit that VLV is an excellent album and has restored my faith in Coldplay almost completely, but U2 will always be the best band in the world in my eyes, and, unfortunately, this is a sentiment shared by many people world over. U2 are golden oldies and they have more experience under their collective belt; they just give off the impression of being more confident in what they're doing and not so much focussed on wanting to be 'as good as' other artists (as Coldplay seem to be, in general) and more focussed on their own constant improvement. So I can see them winning in the critical stakes, cos they have the utter respect of the music industry these days (not saying Coldplay don't deserve it, in fact I think they do, but people were stingy about giving VLV 5 stars). In terms of commercial success, I can see Coldplay winning this one - in many ways, they are more of a pop group than U2; you can see it if you compare How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb's sales to X&Y's - X&Y stayed at the top of the US charts for three weeks, while HTDAAB was only there for one (plus far measlier sales). And before that, All That You Can't Leave Behind only got to number 3 in America, despite projections of strong sales. U2 haven't had a song in the US Top Ten since 1997 (although Vertigo would have been if they were counting download sales back then) while Coldplay are currently sitting on 2, plus one number 1. Compare that to U2's early career (they didn't have a top ten/number one until With Or Without You in 1987, 5 albums in). And just generally, Coldplay are the kind of artist anyone would buy; they don't cater to a particular audience, whereas a lot of people consider U2 to be too old to bother with. Sorry, that's just my ramblings on the subject - feel free to take issue with any of it

  17. ha - I've had that problem with almost every other song on the album, but this one takes the cake, it's so intoxicating and, well, awesome personally i wouldn't worry about it - at least in my case I get over that addiction phase after a week or two and it just kinda slides into background noise again :D
