  1. If you listen very closely toward the end of the interview, you'll be able to hear the drum loops for one of the songs.
  2. any luck so far? =)
  3. Here's what I could make out from the clip. I think some parts of it is wrong, though. Any help? Chris: ..The only thing that I'll say.. I don't wanna, in any sense, say what I think of our new music. All I'll say is that I don't feel any pressure to do something that people might expect or, what, you know, feel completely free and for that I credit Brian and (inaudible) Markus and all the seven of us. Interviewer: Uh huh Chris: You know, I don't, you know, we just have to stop caring about your known for or about what.. So you, so even if it’s shit at least it’s brave. That’s what Interviewer: (Laughs) Chris: That’s what it’s about (Something like that..) Interviewer: (Laughing) Well, sure, and (inaudible) I don’t think it’s shit. Chris: (At the same time) I don’t think it’s shit. Anyway whether it’s classic or just okay, it’s definitely not playing safe enough to under( Inaudible) Interviewer: Yea. When you started thinking about, you know, which rules to break or which directions to go with that, were these things also about coming up with it lyrically? Also, I feel like your voice on some of these tracks.. Some of my favourites are those on the lower register Chris: Yea.. Interviewer: more sort of.. Chris: Actually my singing teacher said that it got her aroused so Interviewer: (Laughs) Chris: low. Interviewer: Actually feel (inaudible) yea? Jonny: (Laughing) Chris: So... So I said ‘Well, I’ll try it.’ She’s, you know, she’s a lovely woman. Interviewer: (Laughs) Chris: (inaudible) ‘I say, I do like it when you sing low’ I said (In a low voice) ‘Well, naturally’ Interviewer: (laughs) why have you resisted that in the past? Or is it.. Chris: Well, I think as we go further and further from just being influenced by Radiohead to being influenced by lots of more people is just playing (or plain) plagiarist. I mean, all that we’ve done, really, is just expand our plagiaristic palette. Well the first record we were very much plagiarising Jeff Buckley (and) Radiohead, then Second Record a few of the things by the Bunnymen. The Third record we plagiarised ourselves. And this one, I mean, this is one thing Brian, that Markus is just bringing the most bizarre... From ‘Tinariwen’ to Interviewer: I really like ‘Tinariwen’. I love it. Chris: Yea, it’s amazing. You know, to the obvious like ‘Velvet Underground’ to ‘Johnny Cash’ and then what’s we-‘Donna Summer’, you know just some of the most bizarre (inaudible) Interviewer: (Inaudible) Chris: Still a lot of.. So (inaudible) stuff is probably come from, probably a group called ‘The Golden Gate Singers’, this old barber shop group from the twenties. Interviewer: Really? Chris: Yea, so, I just think it’s nice to realise that there’s a lot more to steal from than we realise
  4. Alright, thanks Alex =)
  5. Haha, let's hope it's legit yea, Alex? =) I'm really really excited now!
  6. could you put it up for us to hear too, if it's legit?
  7. could anyone do a transcript for the interview please? =)
  8. Coldplay's new album preview interview @ Rollingstone.com! http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/19830818/page/35 There are no preview tracks though, just Chris discussing about the album.. here's the except from the article: 'Coldplay Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends 6/17 For their fourth album, Coldplay enlisted producer Brian Eno to broaden their palette beyond the piano-heavy anthems the band is best known for: "Strawberry Swing" includes Afro-pop guitars, "42" is a three-part epic built on glitchy loops and "Yes!" mixes Middle Eastern percussion with Chris Martin's newfound deep-register vocals. "It's impossible to please everybody, and it took us a while to learn that," says Martin, adding that he credits Eno, who has made records with U2 and the Talking Heads, with helping the band leave its comfort zone. "You have to stop caring about what you're known for," says Martin. "So even if it's shit, at least it's brave." ' There is an audio interview on the page as well, so check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkWJCMGuIv4
  9. This isn't exactly afro-pop, but Chris revealed in Q magazine (February) that Brian Eno introduced the band to 'Tinariwen', a band from mali that was heavily rhythmic. I've bought myself a copy of Tinariwen's album 'Amassakoul' and damn it's good. Might not be for everyone's taste though (It takes a couple of listens and some good surround sound to fully appretiate the songs) You can check out their music videos on youtube as well. =)
  10. Hm I thought they said they were finalising the tracklisting on the day that the entry was written? (which would be a few days back) and that the album would be finalised by the end of this week. That was what I thought, though, haha. =) I do remember that 'Prospekt' did mention that he would write up the tracklisting once it was confirmed later in the day. Can't wait!! =D
  11. A few possibilities, really. One is that they could give away this song for free (digitally) and give you an option to buy the physical copy (Which would include some other bonus stuff, maybe?).. sort of like NIN and Radiohead did. This would definitely draw a lot of attention from everyone. Another possibility is that they give it away to those who buy tickets for their upcoming tour as a special 'thank you for supporting us' type of thing. Either that or they give it as a special bonus to those who pre-order their albums via itunes or their website or something like that.. My last guess would be that they give/sell it as an independent song (adding B-sides?) by itself. my 2 cents. =)
  12. My guess would be that they already chose 6 main songs that they definitely wanted to be on the album, so that at least they have part of the album settled. Most likely 3 of the 6 songs are 'Famous Old Painters" (Due to the new website layout), '42' (As mentioned in the article) and 'Death and All His Friends' (In the title) I would speculate that the other 3 are 'Chinese Sleep Chant', 'Yes!' and 'Cemeteries of london' (Because of the optimism given by the people who've heard them as well as the band) Just my 2 cents though. Definitely excited and can't wait for 'Violet Hill' as well!
  13. ohh mann. haha. didn't see any new threads for it, so thought it was new. thanks guys
  14. Rolling Stone reveals 'In the studio: Coldplay' From Rollingstone.com: In the Studio: Coldplay 3/20/08, 2:35 pm EST On a Saturday night in late February, Coldplay are in their North London headquarters, listening to mixes of new songs. After spending months writing and recording with producer Brian Eno, the band is now painstakingly wrapping up its fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends. A few weeks ago, Eno jetted off to work on U2’s new disc, leaving Coldplay to mix, record overdubs and argue over which tracks to include. “I heard a Bono quote once that said, ‘Bands shouldn’t break up over money, they should break up over the track listing,’” says frontman Chris Martin. “Nothing could be more pertinent at this point.” Earlier in the day, the group agreed on a core of six songs to anchor the album — and swore to finally stop recording and focus on mixing. While the other three members sit in a lounge listening to a mix of their new Afro-pop-influenced song “Strawberry Swing,” Martin bursts out of the studio and asks guitarist Jonny Buckland to recut some parts for “42.” The track — a thrilling three-part soundscape with multitracked pianos, swirling strings and looped beats — is one of the songs everyone in the band loves and is a front-runner for first single. With a quick eye roll, Buckland follows Martin into the studio, where they spend the next hour trying increasingly heavy guitar parts. Finally, with Martin pushing Buckland for one more take, the guitarist pushes back. “I think it’s fine the way it is,” he says, before agreeing to give it one more try. “It feels like we’ve been finishing the album for six months,” Buckland says later. “The starting stage was enjoyable — there wasn’t too much hair-pulling. In the middle stage, suddenly you start thinking, ‘Well, we’ve got to figure out which songs are good.’ And this final stage, which has been going on for quite some time, is getting more and more intense.” With Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends, Coldplay are making a sharp break from the piano-and-guitar-driven anthems that have been their biggest hits. “We felt like the first three albums were a trilogy, and we finished that,” says Buckland. “We wanted to do something different.” The band plans to reintroduce itself with “Violet Hill,” which will be given away in a promotion before Viva comes out. It opens with a jagged, distorted guitar riff and settles into a stalking, bluesy beat. Among the biggest changes on the disc is Martin’s voice, which has largely shifted from his trademark falsetto into a deeper register. On “Yes,” over an irresistible North African strings-and-percussion arrangement, he practically moans, “If you’d only, if you’d only say yes . . . I’m just so tired of this loneliness.” “My singing teacher said that it got her aroused when I sang low,” says Martin. Despite the 11 million albums Coldplay have sold, the singer sees Viva as a make-or-break proposition. “This could be our last shot at the big time,” he says. “It’s something in my head, as in artistic relevance. There’s a voice that comes at three in the morning with songs. There might come an age when you say, ‘Ah, fuck it, I’m going to go back to sleep.’ But I’m still at the point where I’ll get up and work it out. Tom Waits or Bob Dylan said sometimes these things bug you until you deal with them. I suppose it’s like the urge to masturbate.” Adds bassist Guy Berryman, “Great bands — Pink Floyd, the Beatles — they’re always exploring.” Back in the studio, close to 2 a.m., Buckland and Martin play the middle section of “42″ over and over, trying to create the perfect guitar line. As it turns out, the late-night overdubs were inspired by an offhand comment Martin heard about the song sounding like Radiohead. “There’s nothing wrong with sounding like Radiohead,” Martin says. “It’s just, when I hear it in my head, that’s not how it sounds. We have to make it right.” For more on Coldplay’s new album, click here. [Photo: Daniel Green]
  15. From Kanye West's upcoming MV 'Homecoming'. Looks sweet.
  16. cephaus replied to cephaus's topic in Coldplay
haha I just went around the net to look for signs of it's existance to be sure, and sure enough, it's on the movie 'The Escapist''s IMDB page. Since the film has already been seen in the SUNDANCE fest, that means people have already heard it (most likely.. heh) Any details would be good =D

Hey all, so here's what we know -- Compiled Tracklist (as of 25 Feb 2008) : - Lost! - Cemetries Of London - Yes! - Famous Old Painters - Glass Of Water - Poppy Fields - 42 - Rainy Day - Violet Hill - LeftRightLeftRightLeft - Prospekt's March - Strawberry Swing - Lovers In Japan - Song For The Escapist I don't think all the tracks will be included on LP4, but these are all the song candidates that we know of so far via Prospekt and the news. -- Personal Guesses: -First Single has been hinted to be the handclap-laden 'Cemetries Of London' (See Q magazine, February 2008 Issue) and would be released late march/ Early April. -I believe that Prospekt's March = LeftRightLeftRightLeft. LRLRL was perhaps a working title for the song until it got changed? - I am very sure that the album artwork and tracklisting is done via this information (Credit goes to Marcoldplayer :) ) 'Coldplay, warm hearts Coldplay were persuaded to write the closing credit track for new British film The Escapist, a Sundance hit. Now the band have seen and loved the film, they have decided to include 'Song for the Escapist' on their forthcoming album. I hear, too, that the record company was a little miffed at having to redesign the CD artwork to include the song on the track listing, but the band insisted and their patronage will, I'm sure, give this tough British film a boost.' - If I had to guess, the band seems very confident with the songs 'Lost!', 'Prospekt's March', 'Glass Of Water', 'Cemetries Of London', and 'Famous Old Painters'. They have been mentioned positively in Q Magazine and Prospekt's entries, thus they have a high chance on making it onto the final tracklist. -- Release Date? All hints point to an early summer release of May/June. I hope it comes out earlier, really. Maybe April? seeing that the album artwork, the tracklist, and mastering of the songs has been more or less finalised. I wouldn't be surprised if they did something crazy on how they would release their album (Think 'In Rainbows' by Radiohead.) -- Prospekt Entry Very very likely to be this upcoming week. We may even be lucky enough to hear a snippet of some of the new songs. (Or even better, the full song!) But maybe that's just wishful thinking. I have a feeling we may get the Album title in the next post. My other analysis for LP4 is in an older thread somewhere, so if you're interested to know, you could check it out. =)
  18. Woah, is this seriously true? If it is, i hope we hear more about it!
  19. What I don't get is why this guy has to make such comments to take on ANYONE, really. Not just Chris. I mean.. doesn't this guy have anything better to do? And c'mon.. tattoo-ing something on your face to show you really mean it? I'm not saying it's not okay to do that, but every individual can express his/her sincerity in which ever way they want. Not just by tattoo-ing something on their face. Some random guy could tattoo something across his face, not because he's sincere about the message it carries, but rather because he thinks it's cool.
  20. That.. would be awesome! =D But.. will it really work? A little part of me feels I would rather watch a streamed concert on my own computer rather than in the cinema.. My 2 cents though. It's a great idea, nonetheless =)
  21. I'm guessing we're going to get a new Prospekt entry sometime this week or next week. Maybe the first single may come out around... late feb?? I really hope it comes out soon, WE NEED OUR COLDPLAY FIX! haha.
  22. Okay, as many of you guys may already know, LOADS of very interesting stuff about the upcoming album were included in the Latest issue of Q magazine. (There's another thread where it has scans and a transcript of the article, courtesy of Busybeeburns =) ) After reading through the article, I had a few thoughts about it written toward the end of this post.. For those of you who still haven't checked it out yet, here's the article: ' As Coldplay enter the final lap of recording their fourth album, they’re mindful of previous pre-release proclamations of greatness - such, “Our next album is going to be the greatest piece of music ever made.” uttered by Chris Martin towards the end of the campaign for 2005’s 12 million-selling X&Y. Flopping onto a sofa in the band’s own North London studio, The Bakery, a twitchy Martin is now hell-bent on, “avoiding hyperbole. We’ll keep it factual.” The band have been working on X&Y’s successor since the summer of 2006. A few months into the process veteran producer Brian Eno and his right-hand man. Markus Dravs, came on board as producers. Eno had known Coldplay for a while [he contributed “bubbling synthesizer” to X&Y’s Low], and has a track record of pushing big bands beyond their comfort zones and helping them locate a new direction, most famously with U2’s The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. “He’s encouraged us to just try things,” says bassist Guy Berryman, who acknowledges they were drawn to Eno’s love of experimentation. “It’s very easy to no try an idea because you think everyone's gonna think it’s a rubbish one. We thought, We’re using Brian not because we’re trying to copy U2 in any way, but because he’s a really nice guy who’s very inspiring to be around. It’s worked out really well.” A plan to road-test new material during a short tour of South America early last year came to nothing. As did some of the tracks they’d been working on up until that point, which were “shunted” aside when they returned to the studio. Berryman says the band have hit a similar wall on “every album”. Meanwhile, being forced to write a fresh batch of tunes helped Martin overcome a crisis of confidence.”The difficult thing about where we were at either months ago,” he says, “is that we were in the position where we were extremely big. But we didn’t actually think we were very good.” Another thing that helped them out of the rut was hypnosis, with the band’s new-found adventurousness extending to writing music while in an altered state. Some might conclude they’ve misplaced their marbles, but Martin seems unconcerned.”Everything over this past few months has been about taking off any shackles,” he says, “We feel like we have so much to prove and so many ideas that we’d like to try - sometimes you need a hypnotist to give you the bravery to do it. “For the record, he insists the experience, “was fun and interesting, and we wrote some nice things.” Martin talks about the recording process as liberating, as being about, “locking ourselves away and stopping worrying about what anyone might say. “It’s been about just trying anything, without worrying. Is this Coldplay?”. Eno also cracked the whip in more mundane ways, structuring the working day, so they followed more regular, rather than rock-star hours. There was to be no more rolling in at noon. “He said, You work far too long, but not hard enough,” admits drummer Will Champion. Inevitably, the producer also altered their approach to making music, encouraging them to consider rhythm, experiment with time signatures and during one eureka moment, transpose Glass Of Water’s piano riff into three different guitars. “It sounded very African, which we liked,” says Berryman. While Q’s in the studio, Eno beavers away on Famous Old Painters, employing a gizmo called a Midi Piano Bar to translate Martin’s signature piano riff onto a variety of other instruments. “We don’t want piano all the way through,” Eno says, flagging up another significant change in the sound of the as-yet-untitled album. He also acknowledges that, “The band wanted to move away from a way of working that had built up on the previous three albums,” So while X&Y germinated in the studio, this one draws on their live shows. “We’ve tried, says Eno, “to base this one more around performance.” They’ve also tried to keep things brief, with the album designed to come in at nine songs and just over 42 minutes. “We’ve been strict about cutting things quite tightly,” maintains Eno. “There’s not a lot of fat - everything sounds like a full composed song.” The final nine songs will be chosen from a shortlist of 20, with mixing having been completed before Christmas. Favourites include the atmospheric, handclap-laden, possible first single Cemeteries Of London, the string assisted Yes and Lost!, which according to Champion, was “drastically” reinvented by ditching its “big hip-hop beat”. “Big hip-hop beats” will come as no surprise to Chris Martin-watchers. The last time the singer was onstage in this country was September 2006, when he guested during Jay-Z’s show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, playing piano on Heart Of The City [Ain’t No Love]. Since then Martin has appeared on both Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come, producing and singing on the track Beach Chair, and Kanye West’s Graduation [he sings on Homecoming]. Will this album see any traces of his passion for the world of rap? “Brian and Marcus have opened us up to all kinds of things,” is Martin’s half-honest, half-flippant response. “They’ve helped us realise it’s OK to be influenced by people who aren’t Radiohead. They’ve introduced us to Tinariwen [from Mali, heavily rhythmic], Rammstein [intense German metal] - everything”. After the progressively more stadium rock sound of their first three albums, the fourth is being billed as Coldplay 2.0. “The start of something fresh,” says Champion. “It was an incredible eight years, but we got to the point of saturation.” Champion also says many of the tracks share a theme: “Trying to remember what’s important in your life, rather than being carried away by the trappings of other things.” Chris Martin suggests Coldplay’s options are now wide open.”That’s what’s nice about being in a band these days: although you’re never gonna be as good as The Beatles, at least you can steal from thousands of different places. It’s a plagiarist’s dream. You can learn something from anyone who’s hungry. So I will steal off anyone that sounds like they’re desperate to do something great. Whether that’s a 15 year-old in my brother’s band or whatever. Could be anybody. INFO Title: TBC Recorded: The Bakery, North London; Spain Key Tracks: Cemeteries Of London, Lost! Famous Old Painters Released: May/June 2008 Strange But True: Group backing vocals were recorded in two churches and a monastery in Barcelona. All “soaked in reverb”, apparently. THE SCIENTIST Maverick producer Brian Eno’s on board. What will Coldplay do? Go African: Eno first explored “the interface between primitive and futuristic” on Talking Heads’ Fear Of Music, which opened with the African rhythms of I Zimbra, a mind-bending collaboration with frontman David Byrne. Likelihood: A sure bet. The band have namechecked Tinariwen and talked about new track Glass Of Water sounding “very African”. ODDS: 2/1 Go Avant-Garde: Eno suggested David Byrne use the nonsense poetry of Dadaist writer Hugo Ball as lyrics for I Zimbra, while avant-garde composer Steve Reich inspired his early studio “treatments” with Roxy Music. As Bono put it later “A lot of English rock ‘n’ roll bands went to art school. We went to Brian”. Likelihood: High experimentation is what Eno does best, after all ODDS: 5/1 Go German: A fellow fan of early 70s Krautrock, David Bowie invited Eno to Berlin’s Hansa studios to work on “Heroes” and The Lodger. When U2 booked the same studio in 1990 for Achtung Baby, he flew in every two weeks to offer “comments and suggestions” Likelihood: Unlikely, though Eno has introduced them to Teutonic metal loons Rammstein. ODDS: 15/1 Go Ambient: The idea for his ambient albums came after Eno was knocked down by a taxi. Recovering in bed, he noticed background noises mixing with the songs playing on his stereo and had the notion of using music “like you use a piece of furniture or… lighting” Likelihood: Low. Stadium rock doesn’t really sound the same without drums. ODDS: 50/1 Go Freestyle: While recording with Bowie in Berlin, Eno made use of his Oblique Strategies, a set of cards bearing instructions such as “Be dirty” and “Change ambiguities to specifics”. “Brian was doing some strange experiments,” recalls producer Tony Visconti. Likelihood: They brought in a hypnotist. It doesn’t get much more freestyle than that. ODDS: 2/1 Let Eno take their press Shot: If his bug-eyed photograph of Coldplay for this issue of Q is anything to go by, Eno clearly fancies himself with a camera. Likelihood: We’d probably suggest that David Bailey isn’t losing any sleep just yet. ODDS 50/1' ---- Alright. Loads and loads of interesting stuff. The album has completed from mixing stage and there're a list of 20 songs to choose from. We know 11 of them so far. We also know that 'Lost!' was supposed to be hip-hop orientated (Probably tying in the the "In doubt over the drum track for 'Lost!'" phrase from Prospekt's December post. But it has been 'drastically reinvented' since then. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Perhaps Coldplay may release the hip-hop version as an exclusive or something in the future?.. Oh the possibilities =) 'Lost!' and 'Yes!' are songs that are assisted by strings. So probably more violin-ish, cello-ish type of songs like 'Bucket For a Crown'? 'Cemetries Of London' is a handclap-laden track. (Is anyone else thinking of '15 steps' by Radiohead, haha) and is most likely the very first single off the new album! =) Okay, so we now have a very 'african' music style feel to 'Glass of water' produced by guitars based on piano riffs. This sounds really exciting to me and I hope they keep it on the album! =D I guess we were right, in some way, in guessing that the new album has a theme of 'life' to it. I still need some time to digest everything- So much info!!! haha The band is probably starting to finalise the publicity ideas, album cover and songlists this month and maybe continuing progress for the new tour/live shows coming up. If what the report about Coldplay performing in february is true, then most likely release date would be around... April? February to showcase some new songs, March to bring on the publicity guns and interviews and all that, and then April the big premiere of the new album! =D That's just me, of course.. I wouldn't mind the album coming out earlier =P heh. So long as it's quality over quantity, I'm definitely okay with it.
  23. Okay, so Wikipedia seems to have a few updates (Take all with a pinch of salt!) From wikipedia: "Rainy Day" (featuring Timbaland) "Prospekt's March" "Everything Will Be Down" (Duets With Nicole Scherzinger) (Produced by Stargate) "Lost! (The Neptunes Remix)" (featuring Jay-Z) (Produced by The Neptunes) This.. seems a bit made up to me.. What do you guys think?
  24. I think the words 'Prospekts March'/'Prospekts Mark' ( Personally I believe it to be the first one) may either refer to it being the title of the album, or a song.. I don't really think 'March' is referring to the release date as March. Awhisper, hmm.. I had the impression they were going to release 2 totally new songs that were not on the 4th album independently becasue they didn't fit with the album? It's getting me all excited! Brass Bands, Backup vocal singing in churches, Vibrancy and feels Latin America, it feels like a really really dense and exciting record that may just work =D Edit: Seemingly, after re-reading the entry with the tracklisting, you may be right, Awhisper. Let's hope 2 songs do come out before the Album =D haha.
  25. Words can't describe how excited I really am. And it's just a new prospekt post. hahaha. Can't wait for the album- Glad that they ARE making progress =)
