  9. A Bristol woman has become the first person to skydive over the world's highest mountain. 29-year-old Holly Budge jumped out of a plane at nearly 30,000 feet and flew towards Everest in a special parachute which allowed her to float on thin mountain air. She described the experience as "amazing, just spectacular". "We had one minute of freefall and, while we were above the clouds, you could see Everest popping out of the top," she said. The daredevil added that the £17,000 cost to perform the stunt was worth it. "It is something that has never been done before," she said.
  10. A Chorley man has been handed a £350 fine for watching TV shows including Hollyoaks too loudly. Peter Nobile, who is in his 60s, reportedly "made his neighbour's life hell" for over a year by continuing to watch television and listen to his radio at high volumes. According to the Leyland Guardian, Nobile's next-door neighbour Mrs Sweeney quickly complained to Environmental Health officials, who issued Nobile with an abatement notice in February. However, the decision was later taken to prosecute when he continued to breach his notice. Leyland Magistrates' Court heard two sound recordings made through Sweeney's walls, which were said to be sound bites from an episode of Hollyoaks and a film. Environmental Health Officer Susan Briggs told the court: "[Mr Nobile] firmly believed he did not have any hearing problem and was not disposed to seek advice from his GP or otherwise." Sweeney said: "He didn't seem to take any notice of what had been said to him. This last couple of months, he has made it even worse for me. I have felt like going next door to take his radio out. It was just unbearable." Magistrate Par Arrowsmith concluded that the noise emanating from Nobile's property had a 'detrimental' effect on Sweeney's wellbeing. He subsequently fined Nobile £350 as well as ordering him to pay £809.31 costs and £15 to a victims' surcharge fund.
  11. A 12-year-old mare named Peggy has been barred from her local pub. The horse, who has a taste for John Smith's bitter and pickled onion crisps, has been banned from O'Malley's in Jarrow, South Tyneside because landlady Jackie Gray doesn't want her ruining the new carpet. "Although she is probably cleaner than some of my customers, I had to put my foot down and show her the door," said Gray. Peter Dolan, the horse's owner, added: "People come into the pub and the first thing they say is 'Where's Peggy?' I tell them she's kicked the habit and is teetotal now. "No-one even took any notice of her. Everyone just saw her as one of the locals."

  14. Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear swore 52 times in the space of five minutes at a recent press conference. Kinnear, who has been vilified in the media for taking on a short-term job that a host of other managers had turned down, kicked off the conference by calling a tabloid journalist "a c***". The football boss then launched into a tirade when the journalist asked him why he had given the team the day off on his first day in charge. "It is none of your f****** business," Kinnear said. "What the f*** are you going to do? You ain't got the balls to be a f****** manager. F****** day off. Do I want your opinion? Do I have to listen to you?" As the press conference became increasingly heated, a Newcastle press officer said: "What has been said in here is off the record and doesn't go outside." Kinnear then responded: "Write what you like. Makes no difference to me. Don't affect me, I assure you. It'll be the last time I see you anyway." --------- Well, this is newcastle isn't it....
  15. A man in Croatia has caught a bullet intended for his wife in his false teeth. Stipe Cavlovic, 37, and his wife Mirna were arguing with another man about an overdue debt when the men took out a pistol and fired at the couple. Despite shooting at close range, the assailant only grazed Mirna's cheekbone and the bullet ricocheted towards Stipe, after which it caught in his dentures and fell to the ground. "I thought I was dead for sure... I didn't even see the bullet hit my wife. I just saw the flash of the gun's barrel," he told the authorities. "The next thing I knew was something hit my false tooth and I spat out the hot lead. It hurt like hell but we're both still alive." Zagreb police have arrested the 58-year-old shooter and he is currently in custody on firearms charges.
  16. A New York City resident crashed his car into a map shop after getting lost this week. Rodney Bailey was driving his Ford Expedition SUV out of a parking garage when he took a wrong turn and smashed into the window of a Hagstrom Map store. Two women were hospitalised with minor injuries after being clipped by the vehicle, but police ruled that the incident was an accident and allowed Bailey to drive away one hour later. Meanwhile, shop owners decided to stay open for business as usual as they dealt with the debris resulting from the crash. The incident took place on the city's West 43rd Street. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/odd/a131864/lost-man-crashes-car-into-map-store.html
  17. A 38 stone couple were told that they were too heavy for their plane to leave the ground. Alan Coupe and his wife Jan were asked by a stewardess to move to separate ends of the aircraft in order to balance the plane before take off. The incident, which took place in Southampton in April 2005, prompted the pair to go on a diet and lose more than 12st between them. Jan Coupe is quoted in The Telegraph as saying: "The stewardess asked one of us to get up and move to the front, so Alan volunteered to move which I was thankful about as I was so embarrassed I just couldn't look up. "We couldn't believe that we were too heavy for the plane to take off. "It was a decent-sized plane full of holidaymakers so it was devastating to be told that even a big plane like that couldn't cope with all our weight being at the back."
  18. A man shot himself in the arm after his girlfriend refused to have sex with him. 20. X Factor Final Twelve REVEALED! The 12 acts to make it through to this year's X Factor live finals have been revealed. Simon Cowell's 'Boys' category will consist of Scott Bruton, a 19-year-old Pontins bluecoat who gave up his job for a shot at the contest; Eoghan Quigg, the youngest in the group at 15; and Austin Drage, a 21-year-old from Essex. Alan Turner, who caused controversy with his backstory during the audition stages, lost out at the Judges' Houses stage, along with Mali-Michael McCalla and Liam Payne. From the six in the 'Girls' category, Cheryl Cole picked Diana Vickers, 17, Laura White, 20, and Alexandra Burke, also 20. Burke lost out at the Boot Camp stage in 2005, while White, who first auditioned while ill, has already been called "the one to beat" by Simon Cowell. Hannah Bradbeer, Anastacia Baker and Amy Connelly failed to make the cut. Louis Walsh presided over the 'Groups' category in Ireland and opted for Bad Lashes, GirlBand and JLS as his acts. The mentor, who was helped by Shane Filan during the process, sent home Desire, 4 Instinct and Priority. Finally, Dannii Minogue picked single mum Rachel Hylton, 26, Spanish-born 25-year-old Ruth Lorenzo and Danny Evans, 38, a single dad who entered the competition after the death of his wife, as her representatives from the 'Over-25s' category. Suzie Furlonger, James Williams and Louise Heatly did not make it through to the next stage of the ITV1 contest. The 12 finalists will battle it out in the first live show next Saturday.
  21. Former EastEnders star Wendy Richard has announced that she is dying of cancer. The 65-year-old actress, who played Pauline Fowler on the BBC One soap, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease in January this year. She has previously fought breast cancer twice. "I went for my usual annual check-up and they found that some cancer cells had returned in my left armpit," Wendy explained. Richard told the Sunday Express newspaper that she has already made out her will and discussed plans for her funeral. "The drugs I was given to help had an adverse effect. If anything, they did more damage than good so my health has really deteriorated," she continued. "Now I have a cancerous growth on my right kidney and the cancer has spread to my bones. "Twice I've had breast cancer but this is different. It's more aggressive this time, unfortunately, and has spread to the top of my spine and left ribs." Richard plans to marry her partner John Burns before starting a course of chemotherapy later this month. "My oncologist said I've got several useful years ahead of me but since then it's got worse," she said. "Part of me is dreading the chemo but I've got my wig all ready and prepared, because obviously I will lose my hair. Because I've never had chemo before they can give me a big dose so I'm hoping that will zap it." The actress starred on EastEnders from 1985 to 2006. She had previously played Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served? for thirteen years.
