I really rather like the first track, Let's Roll Like We Used To, tho I'd love it a whole lot more if Tom wasn't doing his best Liam Gallagher impression on it  Days of Forgotten we've already heard of course. J'adore. Goodbye Kiss is a bit Gary Barlow, but I really like it. Very un-Kasabian-like, but in a good way. The strings are great. La Fee Verte is lush. I love the lyrics about seeing Dali and policemen and Lucy in the sky and all that. A perfect Serge song, you couldn't imagine anyone else singing this, even Tom. I keep skipping Velociraptor, partly cos I've heard it already and it seems to me like one of those songs that is fucking phenomenal live, but on record, it seems a bit cartoony  Acid Turkish Bath is insane. I like the way the vocals overlap and that Serge's vocal doesn't sound as snake-like as usual (I don't know how else to describe it) I Hear Voices - bit of Daft Punk going on there. This is one of my faves at the moment, I like the way that it's a bit chilled and Tom's voice is quite sexy. And I like the lyrics - did he really just mention Yosemite Sam..? :\ And The Grinch..? :awesome: Re-wired is more like classic Kasabian, in a way. Like something off the first album. I like it, but the synths sound a little basic on this one. Man of Simple Pleasures is pretty, seems a bit dull on first impression but definitely a grower. I love this one. I'm not sure about Switchblade Smiles now, maybe I've over-played it but I compare it to the rest of the album and it seems a bit weak in some way that I can't quite put my finger on. In terms of songwriting quality, I don't think it quite lives up to the others. I don't dislike it, but it's not one of my faves Neon Noon is pretty mellow. Sounds a bit John Lennon at times. And then, randomly, all goes a bit Tron  It's good tho. Overall tho, I do think there's too much of Serge's strangled cat yodel. It's over-done. Surely, he doesn't need the argh-ah-ah-ah-ha-aaaaa thing on every flippin' song. There's a lot of strings on this album, int there? Reminds me of the Empire lp in that way, which is great but I'd have liked a bit more guitar overall. There's a lot of people calling it their best album yet, it's too early yet for me to agree with that, but it's definitley a contender.

There's only youtube footage of velociraptor played live so far (as far as I know) in various states of quality of course. I didn't bother ripping the audio off any of them, cos I'd rather wait for the album version, so I have't heard the song much. Pistols at Dawn is going to be the b-side on the Days Are Forgotten single out in a week or two. It was on nme, it's alright but it's not particularly amazing. Which is a shame really cos they're had some corking b-sides in the past. Maybe they've got something special up their sleeves for the next single *fingers crossed* Anyway, I popped along to post this Guardian article - quite a long read but interesting. The bits about Tom buying loads of Monster Munch and chicken nuggets, talking constantly, whistling and just generally being Tom as funny as hell
-

I don't think much of the b-side. It's a bit boring.

 How cute are those two?

Noel Gallagher
Oooooh I rather like the new track - just listened to it four times in a row on the nme website :D It's very typically Noel, but I like it better than the other track (the ones with the trumpets and the waitress) I'm really interested to hear the rest of the album now.

I'm not that impressed with the album cover either.... but then I hated the West Ryder cover too, so...meh  To me the faces all look more like Ben Kealey than Serge. Tho you can spot Tom by the nose, I think  The Japanese duluxe artwork is nicer tho, I quite like that one Anyway, I've just seen the behind the scenes vid for Days Are Forgotten, which was fun. There's a preview of the actual video somewhere too....dunno where I saw it now.... oh yeah, I remember :D (at 4'17") [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WpMV7bblkg]Tom & Chris from Kasabian Interview on Soccer Am 2011.mp4 - YouTube[/ame]

The 10th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes due Mon., Aug. 8 @ 5 pm CST (GMT -6))
Oh hi mixtape maker. I'm Paula :nice: Ahhhh The Twilight Sad. My brother likes them. I shall have to check 'em out :D And i've heard positive things about Battles and Four Tet before too (but not heard the music) so I'll be seeking them out on Spotify too. Urgh, I really hate iTunes. iTunes is the anti-Christ in my book ;) Mind you, I only managed 27 seconds of that youtube link anyway before I had to switch it off, so it's probably just as well I couldn't play it before. :P Rap's not my thing, sorry. A good tape tho overall, thanks  Oh also, I meant to ask, what's the picture on the artwork you used? Looks like an aerial shot of a city. I'm just being curious...

The 10th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes due Mon., Aug. 8 @ 5 pm CST (GMT -6))
Ok, my review: 1 - Very calming start, very atmospheric. Not generally my sort of thing but it's quite nice and pleasant, builds up nicely. Like the electronic bleeps and buzzes that pop up every now and then. Has a Lykke Lii feel to it. 2 - Starts off like some 60s, slightly cheesy girl-ballad, then all goes a bit Mariah Carey. It's not bad as such, but it's really bland and boring and uninspiring, both musically and vocally. Could it be Beyonce? Not my sort of thing at all. The ending is really...odd. Don't like, sorry * 3 - Awww man, now you're talking. Scuzzy guitars, wicked bassline. Music with a bit of attitude, this. Desire Be, Desire Go ~ Tame Impala. F'ing ace. * 4 - More guitars, brilliant. Subdued, MGMT-kind of vocal. It's a laid-back, slow paced track but still has a bit of aggression in there. Pretty good, I like it. * 5 - Another nice one, interesting sounds, lots of little whistles and flutey songs. Pretty. * 6 - Instrumental. I really like this one cos it's a bit mental. The way it starts reminds of the way Biffy Clyro will often build a tune, but it's more electronic that that and has both a Radiohead and a Miike Snow feel to it too. That sounds like a weird mix, but it works. 7 - Slow start, twangy guitar and a bit of diva-like wailing (which I don't much care for) It's ok this one, very chilled and relaxing, but it doesn't seem to really go anywhere. Nice tho. 8 - won't play in media player.....hang on... ok got it working. Another pretty beginning. Strange vocal, is that female? - has a Macy Gray quality to it, kind of drawling and breathy. It's ok this one, but nothing too exciting. 9 - Ooooh Scottish accent, nice. Acoustic guitar, guy singing. Very mellow. Pretty good. 10 - Interesting bit of strings, nice, short and sweet instrumental. Good. 11 - Hmmm different. Very electronic. This drum-machine-beat is actually starting to hurt my ears now - It's doing me 'ead in. Have to skip this, sorry, it's just random noise to me and the frequencies are nauseating. Keep expecting Craig David to start bo-selectoring over the top of it. 12 - won't play at all :-\ * 13 - Ok, nice ending. Another laid-back, chilled affair. Nice guitar and interesting bleeps and electronic wotnot going on. LOVE the random squeeky-dog-toy effect going on! Made me lol (out loud, an' everything!) Love the intricate guitar work. Impressive. Nice ending to the tape too. Pretty good tape overall. Has a laid-back, spaced-out feel to it with a couple of curveballs in there to mix up the genres. There's just a couple there that were beyond my tolerance levels, I afraid. I starred my favourites - looking forward to finding out who the artists/bands were. Ooooh maybe you could post a youtube link for track 12? Dunno why it won't play :\ Ta very much for the tape, mystery person :nice:

That's ok :nice: Must be an ok mixtape then if you are happy to give it a second listen  Just out of interest which of the bands will you be checking out? Btw, when you posted your last.fm account, I nearly had a heart-attack over the amount of bands you've listened to so I'm glad I was able to provide you with something new :laugh3: Also, I didn't realise I had two track 14's. D'oh

The 10th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes due Mon., Aug. 8 @ 5 pm CST (GMT -6))
OMFG that was quick!! Hi, I made your tape. I'm really glad you enjoyed it but I'm disappointed you didn't play it in order, cos I spent quite a bit of time on the flow and ordering of the tracks but heyho... I guess I have been in a summery mood lately. The tape has a definite blues/folk/country vibe to it, as that just happens to be the sort of music I've been listening too lately and I've been discovering lots of bands within that genre. This was meant to be the last track, a nice, calming, mellow end to the tape. This is off one of the most beautiful albums of this year, All Thru The Night by the Sand Band from Liverpool. I can't reccomend the album highly enough Again, this was meant to be a short, soothing track towardds the end. It's off a free EP of instrumentals by The Coral's old guitarist, Bill Ryder-Jones. The track is called Nothing Ever Changes. Yep, quite a powerful one, rocky but with a country vibe too. This is Band of Horses - The Great Salt Lake I would have expected you to say a bit more about this track, as it's the bonkers, wildcard in the mix. Really fun and upbeat with the sound effects. I love this song. It's called End of The Street by The Bees, a really great band, more people should check them out. Why had you better not say what you were thinking..?? I have no idea who or what the legendary tiger man refers to. :\ This is a bit more rocky/country type music. It's The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club & the song's called River Styx This band is called The See See, a fairly new band with members from both the UK & the USA. Their debut is my 2nd fave album of this year, it's just gorgeous. This one is called Little Tease. Dreamy is a good word, it's quite spaced out, 60s, psychedelic stuff. A last minute addition to throw in a (slightly) different genre. Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind? - Tame Impala Yep, a cover of Eleanor Rigby by another Liverpudlian Neville Skelly. Again there's a folk/country influence going on with the steel guitar. His album is superb. It's a bit rugged sounding this track. Has some great lyrics. Howlin' - The Black Keys This is an english band called The Seal Cub Clubbing Club. Great name, huh? Their album is a complete mix of stuff, and this is one of the more relaxed tracks so I totally get the Fleet Foxes/Midlake compariosns but the rest of their stuff isn't this normal  Old World - The Seal Cub Clubbing Club This is By The Sea, a really new band, so this is one of their demos. Most of their stuff seems to be inspired by the sea and the coast, this song's called Old Coasts. Yes, very dancable and happy feeling, I love it. This is beautiful, lyrics about meeting a girl he describes as a Winter Rose. Gorgeous. Yes, loads of instrumentation but not over-done. This is The Bees again. Another slight change to the overall genre of the mixtape. These are more of a proper rock band, I guess. Might sound familar cos they (especially the singer) sounds a lot like Biffy Clyro. If you're a Scottish rock band, I guess it's hard not to sound like Biffy Clyro really. Yes, I Was Drunk - Twin Atlantic This was meant to be the tape intro :( A nice, jingly introduction. It's The See See again, track's called Mary Soul. He's singing "Mary Soul, knows it all, Mary Soul, standing tall" etc Tracklist: track ~ band ~ year of release ~ album 1 ~ Mary Soul ~ The See See ~ 2011 ~ Late Morning Light 2 ~ Old World ~ The Seal Cub Clubbing Club ~ 2010 ~ Royal Variety 3 ~ Howlin' For You ~ The Black Keys ~ 2010 ~ Brothers 4 ~ Eleanor Rigby ~ Neville Skelly ~ 2011 ~ Poet and The Dreamer 5 ~ Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind? ~ Tame Impala ~ 2010 ~ Innerspeaker 6 ~ Little Tease ~ The See See ~ 2011 ~ Late Morning Light 7 ~ River Styx ~ Black Rebel Motorcycle Club ~ 2010 ~ Beat The Devil's Tattoo 8 ~ End of The Street ~ The Bees ~ 2007 ~ Octopus 9 ~ The Great Salt Lake ~ Band of Horses ~ 2006 ~ Everything All The Time 10 ~ Yes, I Was Drunk ~ Twin Atlantic ~ 2011 ~ Free 11 ~ Winter Rose ~ The Bees ~ 2010 ~ Every Step's A Yes 12 ~ Old Coasts ~ By The Sea ~ 2011 ~ demo 13 ~ Nothing Ever Changes ~ Bill Ryder-Jones ~ 2011 ~ A Leave Taking 14 ~ Song That Sorrow Sings ~ The Sand Band ~ 2011 ~ All Through The Night Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?hdpmsja54t2147l Oh and to whoever made mine, I have d/loaded it & was planning to give it it's first listen tonight but this review coming in so quickly has thrown that completely. It's past 1am now, I'm going to bed  Will be listening tomorrow and will review before Thursday, at the latest :)

2011 Albums Worth Listening To
Everyone excited about Noel Gallagher's solo should listen to this one (they're 'Noel's cosmic scouse mates' according to Q mag) All Through The Night by The Sand Band "The Sand Band are about truth and melody. Their dark love songs will break and mend your heart. Achingly beautiful and completely individual awash with psychedelic atmospherics." The singer/guitarist is gonna be in Noel's High Flying Birds touring band, which should hopefully help raise their profile a bit  Their 2nd album is out early next year

And there's supposed to be an interview too, tho not sure I can cope with two hours of Zane Lowe, even for Tom n' Serge. There's bound to be a d/load link somewhere later on...I'll wait for that. I really like DaF. I think I like this best out of the three we've heard so far. I'm resisting temptation to play any of them a whole lot tho, cos I don't wanna end up sick of hearing them by the time the album is out. And I wanna listen to the album as a whole as see how they fit in with the other tracks. Awww c'mon September
