Anyone have Karma Police by Radiohead? I have found two versions: one is handwritten and rather hard to read, the second is the guitar/vocal tabs... but as of yet no full piano score. anyone who has it would be my new best friend!

Come on guys. I have absolutely no problem with him being here! He has every right to express his opinion just like we do (though going to a coldplay site to trash them is a little catty but...). Besides he make good arguments, is able to string a sentence together (its not like he's going "COLDPLAYZ RIPD OFF LOLZZZZ!!!111one) and a good debate never hurt anyone. having said this I think everyone seems to be overlooking coldplays official response which, in my opinion, puts it best: "With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence on the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours. Coldplay." They aknowledge it. They pay respect to Joe. They say if theres similarities its a coinciedence. They "respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this". If he's still going after them, it's clearly for money and thats just plain greed. No money in the world is going to make people like him more. Nobody is going to think "oh thats the guy who wrote that coldplay song I liked so much before but dislike now". Fact is, theres only so many notes and so many combinations you can make with them. And with over 500 years of music history your bound to run into some similarities. Hell if we could go back and listen to all the songs over the past 500 years I'm sure we'd be able to find similarities to just about every song on the billboard top 40. Except for those rap tunes. No real musician would ever write that crap ;)

And didn't Rasputin rip off some Turkish song? Nobody seemed to care 'bout that. And Rasputin is a terrible (albeit very catchy and danceable) track!

Technically not true: you're making a parody of the coldplay album cover which is totally legit. You're completely missing my point however. "Almost the same" and "the same" are two different things. Plain and simple. If this is the case, then one could argue, yeah Webber may have lifted it (personally I don't care all that much for Echoes and have loved Phantom since I was 2... so you can see where my bias is). IF it's the same scale, in the same key signature, starting on the same note and ending on the same note... etc then yes! I would say thats a copy. Now, lets apply this to Viva... not the same notes, not the same time signature, not the exact same progression... hmm kind of falling appart here isn't it? And I'm sorry - the pitch shifting video -- if you have to modify something to prove your point its just inaccurate (unless the pitch shift was merely up and octave or something, im a little unclear what is going on). I could pitch shift all sorts of things to make them sound like other things - hell I could rearrange Citizen Kane to make it look like it was ripping off the Simpsons but I'd be cheating. Again, maybe because it's because I don't understand whats occurring in the video, but I took music for 13 years (although true, I started at age 3...) but saying changing the font and spacing is a bad analogy. Perhaps saying "taking an article and using a thesaraus to replace every word, throwing in a few words yourself, re-arranging them into a better form" would be closer but it's much more than just changing the font ;) Tough it's tough to be sure -- in university its tough to know when an essay is a lift that has been carefully rewritten in ones own words or when the ideas are the same. If your in a psyc. class and expected to read freud and then write a paper based upon your research are your findings going to be similar to those of freud? of course! are you plagerizing freud? Not unless you took his paper and handed it in as your own/carefully rewrote in your own words. Again, I'll admit, I don't study music anymore. But I think I have a pretty good ear and yes, they're similar (from the video I saw I heard about 3 notes that sounded close to being the same if not the same, while the rest sounded nothing alike) but NOT THE SAME. And for me that's where everything falls apart. I've heard songs that are a lot closer to being the same, and as everyone keeps pointing out, if Coldplay did lift/borrow/steal they would come clean about it because they always have. So either it was an accident, or it didn't happen (or they came to Joe, and Joe wanted too much money or something... who knows). The fact is these people are professional musicians. They know who Joe Sat is, how could they not. If he came to them, I could only forsee them saying "you're right its somewhat similar... but nothing more. Sorry about your luck". They would have taken him seriously. I dont think they think "oh we're bigger than you Joe Sat go eff yourself". They paid Kraftwerk for crying out loud! I dont think many American/English teenagers are big into 1980s German synth-pop... but they paid Kraftwerk! They could have just used the lick and said "meh, it's what musicians do" but they didn't. Why would this time be any different. Similar, but not the same. ps. Michael Jackson got sued numerous times over stuff like this and won every time because he was always able to prove his process and no one else was. Look into the "Dangerous" copyright case. Some french guys claimed there song was copied for Dangerous. After listening the only thing similar was the fact that both songs used the word "dangerous" and contained one or two chords that were the same. The judge tossed the case out on the grounds that Jackson did a much better job proving he came up with the song (and even claimed that perhaps THEY ripped HIM off).

technically he's not. its considered parody... at least in the US. but we wont get into copyright/fair use. we'll be here all millenium.

I think your giving the case too much credit. Appart from here (and digg) i had heard nothing about it. no one i spoke to has mentioned it/known about it (and they all know im a big coldplay fan so they would have rubbed it in my face). Hell, most people I know wouldn't even know who Joe Sat. is (only me and my other music nerd bud do). Viva la Vida is a great song. It always will be. Copied or not, its great. People forget this stuff anyways. I hate to keep brining it up, but does anyone remember that Ghostbusters might have ripped off Huey Lewis? Does anyone mention MJ might have lifted the groove of a Hall and Oates song? Hell no! Billie Jean is considered one of the greatest pop songs of all time and is still being played 26 years later on radio stations and clubs around the world. If its good it'll stick. One might argue Sat. was hoping his tune would stick... jealousy is a real bitch.

I think you put it best when you said "almost identical". ALMOST is the difference. Have you ever listened to a TV show where the song is ALMOST identical to that pop song you love, or that theme tune you know, or that little happy birthday diddy. Guess what, they can't be sued because its not identical, but ALMOST identical. You're right. They're similar. So was Ghostbusters and I want a new drug. So was Billie Jean and I Can't Go For That. But they're completely different songs. Whether or not Coldplay was directly or indirectly influence by Satriani remains to be seen (if they were they'd probably ask - the did it before with Kraftwerk why wouldn't they this time for Satriani - an incredibly talented and well known musician in his own right), however the fact is they aren't identical so its a moot point. And honestly, dont waste your time here. This is a place for die-hard coldplay fans, we're not going to change our minds on this... well maybe we would if someone presented a valid argument but that remains to be read. Oh and PS: Remember when Roger Waters tried to claim Andrew Lloyd Webber ripped off Echoes for Phantom of the Opera -- that got tossed out because it was a bloody chromatic scale. Something Waters didn't invent/own/copyright/trademark/conceive. It's music people. Unless you're ripping off huge sections (which could even be justified as sampling) than shut up. Though I will give you some credit: Coldplagerism is VERY clever.

Apparently the sheet music company released TWO versions of the Hops and Fears sheet music, for differing skills. does anyone have both of these (or know which version we have already -- is it a mix of the two? i only ask because I noticed "everybody's changing" seems to be rather simplistic...)

John Mayer performs Lost+/Clarity
Haha fair game. Its not his best cover... earlier in the night he did a cover of Little Red Corvette. Awesomeness.

John Mayer performs Lost+/Clarity
oh and in Johnny's defense, it was the 3rd or 4th encore after 2 hours straight of performing by himself... ...so yes he sounds a little off at bits but you would too!

Lost! Free Sheet Music PLEASE?
Thanks for this. I had more or less figured out Lost? after listening to the track over and over, but its nice to have the full thing... Thanks to Robert Keys ;)

John Mayer performs Lost+/Clarity
wow a lot of mayer haters... its funny that the one person mentioned stopping after his second album, since Continuum (his third) is arguably his best. SURE the singles are overplayed (waiting on the world to change is VERY annoying now...) but otherwise the album is a great mix of blues, soul, rock, and pop. but that's just my opinion. im a big fan... ...then again he's VERY different from Coldplay so I can understand there not being a large crossover of fandom. but he's an incredibly talented musician none the less. just like the boys.

thats because its the last song of the 2-hour+ set. I'm going to upload the track for everyone... http://ehmjay.tumblr.com/post/63642570/clarity-lost-remix-johnny-m-does-coldplay-my

John Mayer performs Lost+/Clarity
Just so people know, if you go there now it's probably not going to be just Lost+/Clarity but rather it's going to be the live stream of the whole show... i'll upload the track itself when i get home from work.

John Mayer performs Lost+/Clarity
its a combination of "Lost" (coldplay) and john mayer's song Clarity (along with Jay-Z's "No Hook" thrown in there). So yes, its a slightly different mix, but all in all I think he did a pretty good job.

John Mayer performs Lost+/Clarity
Last night in LA John Mayer did a live show in which he performed "Lost+" as part of his encore set. It can be heard here: http://www.johnmayer.com/live/ It's really good -- unless of course you hate John. But I was quite impressed... mind you im a big Johnny M fan.

Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
Again, I want to remind everyone of the claims that Ray Parker Junior ripped off Huey Lewis and Michael Jackson Ripped of Hall and Oates... why is it that every time an artist has a mega hit another artist tries to claim they did it first? dont get me wrong, satriani is an awesome guitarist, but he doesn't really have a leg to stand on...

Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
OH come on! I mean, yes I'll admit three chords in the same progression are more or less the same (though they are different chords so... right there the arguments out the window). This is just silly! Almost as silly as Roger Waters claiming that Andrew Lloyd Webber copied him cause they both used Chromatic Scales. Sorry guys, but a few notes are not going to cut it. Its not like that Madonna song that sounds nearly identical to the Victoria Beckham track... ; ) Oh and Ray Parker Junior ripped off Huey Lewis and Michael Jackson Ripped of Hall and Oates... why is it that every time an artist has a mega hit another artist tries to claim they did it first?

Hopefully its not a crime to mention the trio but I was reading about christmas tunes by famous artists and heard about this song "A Heart To Hold You" which BBC claimed was the Christmas song of 2005 or something... just wondering if anyone knows if it's been leaked/has it? i'd love to include it on my christmas mix cd this year.

John Legend
John Legend Sheet Music Request Hi Guys, I'm trying to track down the sheet music for a tune by Mr. Legend called "It Don't Have to Change". Its from the album "Get Lifted" and is in the sheet music book for it. Does anyone happen to have a scanned copy they can hook me up with? I'll return the favour somehow!
