  17. February 11, 2010 - submitted by Damian, Poland Q. Hi, the Oracle I've been invited for a 18th birthday party. There are going to be up to 6-7 people and I know 3 of them quite good. The problem is that I'm a shy, non-talkative person. The things get even worse because I'm struggling with depression, which lasts for 1 year so far. I'm also a stutterer (stammerer) and I'm afraid that I'll make a fool of me in front of people I don't know. I'm scared of it. Also, there is going to be some alcohol which I hate. I promised myself that I won't let anyone force me to get drunk if I didn't want to. I really care about them and I don't want to lose my only friends. I don't know what to do. If I didn't go they would get mad on me. I refused them a lot of times and they never get mad on it but I don't want them to feel sad because of me. I please you to answer as fast as possible. I need to tell them the answer tomorrow at school. The time is Poland is now 00:17 so I have 7-8 hours left. Yours, Damian P.S. Is Coldplay going to release the album in the first quarter of the year? The Oracle replies: You should hopefully get this before the party... I truly believe if you don't want to do something, don't. However I feel you are deliberately holding yourself back from social occasions because of your self-esteem regarding stammering and depression; I would also guess the shyness is a by-product of the two. I know this may sound flippant but try not to worry about "making a fool" of yourself in front of people you don't know; if they aren't sensitive to your stammer they're not worth it. Your friends will be sad if you don't join them again so maybe make the effort for them but do not feel pressurized into drinking alcohol. Many of us will be subjected to peer pressure at some point in our lives but you are in control of your own actions. How about you agree to go for a short time? Promise yourself that if you are at all uncomfortable or unhappy at the party you will leave. p.s No.
