Okay, I didn't do much work. Was mostly listening to the mixtape :uhoh:
It's 1:30+ hours long. But you haven't got me complaining! So when I opened the folder, instead of a cover picture I found a word document that said READ ME BEFORE LISTENING so that's what I did before starting the tape. I listened it first in Winamp, where no visuals were shown. When later on I listened to it again at work, I was surprised to have a cover coming up in Mediaplayer! Nice surprise. It really fits the mood of the whole tape imo.
Now on to the songs:
1. It starts with a striaghtforward pop/rock song. It has a nice Coldplay vibe :} (I mean that in the good way, because I am one of those people in the lounge that still likes Coldplay :P) I like it! 8/10
2. Interpol - C'mere :) It's a sad song. He sings that he loves a girl that is in love with someone else :(
3. Female vocalist with a straight love song. I know this singer. But I don’t like her songs, to be honest. It’s a bit blank.
4. OMG a straight 10 there! I love this song so much! It's so heartbreakingly sad. Love the contrast between the guitar play in the verses and the chorus (refrain). Such a simple guitar line to begin with and then with the chorus they go loose EVERY OCCASION I LL BE READY FOR A FUNERAL <3 I really missed a song like this on their latest album. All the strength and inspiration seems to have bled out of them. All that’s left is a boring indie folk band that sounds like any of them. Band Of Horses – Funeral 10/10
5. Elbow - The Night Will Always Win. I didn't really like this CD. It’s a pretty song, but a bit too slow for me. It fits better in this mixtape than on the album. Here I would give it a 7/10
6. Nice male voice. An The XX guitar-stylish intro. I like the way the song progresses. A sort of beat gets in, the song gets louder and louder ... then more percussion comes in and the song is not a ballad anymore but Indie. Weird to hear the guy sing ‘God Damn’ with such a soft voice. But it fits, it’s the song. Why didn’t I know about this song yet??? It’s great! I am looking very much forward to hear what it is.
7. Long guitar intro. No wait, this is a post-rock song. The whole way the song is building up to a massive thing. No lyrics needed, the song does all the work. The song seems to be perfectly capable of capturing emotions and throwing them right back at ye. Well done. Did I mention I love build-ups? The song sounds like it could be ... Explosions In The Sky or Mono?
8. Not impressed by the beginning. I guess this song is mostly lyrics driven. Later on when the trumpets come in, it gets better. Sadly that’s also the end of the song. Cute song, though the lyrics are sad. I don’t like this song so much.
9. Nice flow in the song. A bit of disco, electronic. It sounds like VETO. Mostly the voice. The music is too uplifting though. The multi-layered voice makes me think I know this band, it is typical for them, but I can’t get the band :bomb: ... after long thinking.... I think it’s Friendly Fires! I don’t know this song from them :S
10. Piano piece. It feels like an intermezzo though the melody is too much worked out for it. I guess it can work as a stand-alone song. It sounds sad. Like a tune someone would play for someone else hoping that that person gets through the music how much he loves her and that it saddens him that she doesn’t get it. Very sensitive. At second listen I find myself really liking this.
11. The song gets really nice when the guitar tunes in. Another lyric driven song. I notice that I pay attention to the lyrics (well, the last song didn’t have lyrics, so I obviously didn’t do it there). The song is a bit too simple for my taste. 5/10
12. Another relative short song. Acoustic guitar, double vocals. Oh, it’s the guy that covered The Knife. He has a pleasant voice. His guitar work sounds überordinary though. It can’t keep my attention.
13. Oh, didn’t expect those fast drums to set in. Oooooh wait, I know this artist! <3 Ah lovely, that deep voice. It’s almost soothing. It’s The National isn’t it? The song is again quite short, but so fitting. The guy says so much in it. He’s hurt because he loves her but she doesn’t answer his feelings or changes her mind too many times and he knows he has to let go but can’t and instead gets more ‘stalkerish’ hoping that she will notice him and realise that she needs him as well. He tries to be interesting. “boning up” wtf? This song kinds of creeps me out. Doesn’t make me like it less :P
14. The guitar in the beginning doesn’t really do it for me. It sounds like Snow Patrol. Yeah, quite sure it’s them. The song is okay, it has a nice blast in the end. I always forget that I like Snow Patrol. I think it’s because some songs of them I detest, and it makes me too cautious to want to find new songs by them. I dunno, I guess I am missing out on good songs because of that... because this is a decent song.
15. Sigur Rós – Heysatan. This song of them is much like Sigur Rós new album. More ambient than post-rockish.
16. Folkish song. More uplifting than previous songs. Nice little choir in the chorus :) I’d like to know who the artist is. 8/10 but might grow even more on me.
17. Starts very dark in comparison to the previous track. It’s the next part of the story. Here the guy is disillusioned when the relationship with the girl isn’t what he expected it to be.
18. The Temper Trap :) Nice song. I am a sucker for high male voices :S
19. Sounds like a singer-songwriter. The music is relative simple. The lyrics a bit weird “I’ll be your fever” :uhoh: I’d skip it if it would on a CD I listen to, sorry :S
20. Jeej! The XX :D It’s from their debut. I didn’t like this song that much as other songs on it, like Intro and Infinity which are amazing! But I like how they made the drum sound like a heartbeat, since the song is about “heart skipped a beat” 7/10
21. Oh, I hear backward sounds in the intro. Much repetitive lyrics. Are you telling yourself or someone else that it’s gonna be alright? :P Thinking back of it, this one loops nicely with the first song, which basically says the same :“it’s gonna be alright, your days are gonna come” and of course the ending of the song is the reverse of the intro
I enjoyed the mix! It didn’t get boring. Some songs made me go ‘meh’ but overall I liked what it had to offer me. I can imagine others getting other favourites out of this one as I do. My favourites are 1, 4, 6, 10, 13, 16, 18. The tape had a nice mix of different styles in it, but not so that it got messy. Most still went with the general theme and made it flow. Now I am curious what the tracklist is! :D
