Severe snowstorm hits US, bears down on East Coast
Yeah it was fun driving home from work last night, it took me about 1.5 hours (normally half hour to 45 minutes). On one of the roads, people couldn't get enough traction to climb the hill, more and more people were getting stuck and put on their hazard lights as I was approaching. I was a bit concerned the same might happen to me (particularly since I have a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, which doesn't exactly handle well in snow/ice). I just made sure not to stop, keep going up, and weaved through the stalled vehicles. Oh and when I did eventually get home, the power was out for miles, YAY. I'm not sure how long the power was out before that, but it came back on about 2 hours after I got home so that wasn't too bad. On the bright side, it's pretty outside.

'27 dead' in Connecticut primary school shooting
Full story re: bad guy vs. good guy with gun comment, and NRA wanting armed policemen in every school comment.... NRA leaders say armed police officers should be in all schools after Newtown, CT school shootings WASHINGTON (AP) - The nation's largest gun-rights lobby called Friday for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings." The National Rifle Association broke its silence Friday on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead. The group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference that "the next Adam Lanza," the man responsible for last week's mayhem, is planning an attack on another school. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," LaPierre said. He blamed video games, movies and music videos for exposing children to a violent culture day in and day out. "In a race to the bottom, many conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society, by bringing an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty right into our homes," LaPierre said. He refused to take any questions after speaking. Still, though security was tight, two protesters were able to interrupt LaPierre's speech, holding up signs that blamed the NRA for killing children. Both were escorted out, shouting that guns in schools are not the answer. More than a dozen security officers checked media credentials at various checkpoints and patrolled the hotel ballroom. LaPierre announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers. The 4.3 million-member NRA largely disappeared from public debate after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., choosing atypical silence as a strategy as the nation sought answers after the rampage. The NRA temporarily took down its Facebook page and kept quiet on Twitter. Since the slayings, President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now" against U.S. gun violence and called on the NRA to join the effort. Moving quickly after several congressional gun-rights supporters said they would consider new legislation to control firearms, the president said this week he wants proposals to reduce gun violence that he can take to Congress by January. Obama has already asked Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and pass legislation that would stop people from purchasing firearms from private sellers without a background check. Obama also has indicated he wants Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity magazines. http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/national/WATCH-LIVE-NRA-officials-make-statements-on-gun-control-in-wake-of-Newtown-CT-school-shootings

oh boy... http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/national/6th-grader-brings-gun-to-school-says-he-brought-it-to-defend-himself-from-newtown-type-attack 6th grader brings gun to school, says he brought it to defend himself from Newtown-type attack (AP) - Authorities say a Utah sixth-grader caught with a gun at school told administrators he brought the weapon to defend himself in case of an attack similar to the mass shooting last week in Newtown, Conn. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that two classmates at West Kearns Elementary School reported the gun to a teacher toward the end of the school day Monday. Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley says the teacher "immediately apprehended the student," and police responded shortly after. Horsley tells KSL-TV that an unloaded gun and ammunition were found in the 11-year-old's backpack. Authorities have not released the child's name. Horsley says school police are investigating reports that the boy pointed the gun at another child's head. He says such accounts haven't been confirmed. Authorities say no one was injured.

'27 dead' in Connecticut primary school shooting
^ Excellent post. Admittedly I'm not familiar with all the laws/regulations associated with guns and ammo. The fact that there are so many different laws from State to State (and even within) is a bit problematic. If we as a nation have "the right to bear arms", I think the associated laws/regulations should be consistent across the board. But, as you mention... this still wouldn't address the root of the issue.

Atoms For Peace (Thom Yorke+Flea+others)
Any thoughts on whether they will perform at festivals this year? Pitchfork would be nice. And maybe Movement, that would be beyond awesome.

Radiohead
Are we going to talk about Atoms for Peace here, or should I open a new thread for that little project? edit: nevermind, I just realized there is already an AFP thread

'27 dead' in Connecticut primary school shooting
I'm not particularly knowledgaeble of all the rules/regulations regarding gun ownership, but today somebody pointed out to me that basically anybody can buy ammo. You can't shoot a gun without ammo; so it seems a bit silly that while a license is required to purchase a gun, you don't need a license to purchase the ammo, i.e., the other piece of the deadly puzzle. Maybe requiring a license to purchase ammo is something that should be considered. If there were a database of sorts for licensed ammo purchases, red flags would go up when someone is essentially stockpiling ammo (even the purchases are from different sources).

Interesting side note... gun sales skyrocketed this weekend. A local news story noted that in particular, the assault rifle (AR) style is selling out, because people currently with licenses are afraid that AR style will soon be banned (so people are snatching them up while they have the chance).

'27 dead' in Connecticut primary school shooting
Last time I checked it was "multiple deaths"... I didn't think it would be as many as 27 though. (Of course, even 1 is too many.) That's just... ugh. I can't imagine. And I'm sure some of them didn't close their eyes, just think what they're going through.

[12-Dec-2012] Chris Martin @ 12.12.12 - The Concert For Sandy Relief, Madison Square Garden, New Yor
My opinion regarding some of the recent commentary/topics: I think his voice wasn't 100%, but it was certainly MUCH better than some other past performances. I was pleased. Regarding his attire, I think it was appropriate. He was there as Chris Martin, not Coldplay. MX attire wouldn't have really made sense. At other charity events, the attire wasn't Coldplay-themed either (even though the performance was with the band); take the Hope For Haiti Now attire, and the Crisis Gigs attire for example. I would much rather see him over-dressed, than inappropriately under-dressed (like he was at Gary Barlow's birthday celebration).

What's the weather like today in your town?
It's gonna get up to 5°C today, 10°C on Sunday. We've had only one day of snow so far this winter, and that melted the same day. I want it to be pretty outside.
