How to accompany yourself?

In my year of playing guitar, I learned that if you want to learn rhythm, don't focus on looking at strum patterns, just get a feel for it. Trust me, it took a while for me to get upstrokes right, but trust me, you'll be good.

So far I've been taking piano lessons, probably for about two or three months now, and I'm kind of able to read music, but not really. But with your advice, I'll try to practice more, I've just been more interested in guitar.
