Oh, I'm just not very good with Europe, and did think it was interesting how Coldplaying divided it into north-western and south-eastern Europe... I'm just more used to the simple east/west divide... Otherwise north vs south... I wasn't sure which category to vote for you, given Portugal is probably technically the westernmost country in Europe :P You did well - I'm sure I wasn't the only confused and unsure Coldplayer out there... ;)

Thanks so much everyone... :D I'm a bit embarrassed actually - I feel I'm just doing my bit to make this place as inclusive and welcoming for everyone as I have felt myself in my years visiting here, while at the same time not forgetting it is a forum to share, analyse, and debate views / opinions. Given the band itself always sends out a message of love, hope and acceptance (which are the things I really connect to with Coldplay and deeply believe in myself), I feel the least I can do is try to embody that a little bit in my posts! Thanks everyone who voted - I am honoured with your votes... As for gentleparachute, that name came about when I was trying to think up a unique username that reflected myself at the time, the connection the band had with myself, and what I hoped to convey about myself, which could grow with me... Parachutes wasn't too long out and really resonated with me (both album and song), while gentleness has always been me, and the two really fit and complement each other... It felt so safe and reassuring (@Batman I really needed that gentle parachute myself at the time :)), and the words could have been lyrics written for the album :). I am glad that it resonates with some people here as well :D

I voted for the older thread itself but looks like people preferred less negativity/ arguments... Either way, a win for you @I ran away - you did have a good thread, congrats!

Previously there was hope (when they were indie darlings) that they would become "great"... I think the critics now feel all hope is lost (when perhaps more accurately maybe it was never "there") and a lot of reviews are reflecting that. Also I guess a lot of critics don't know how to respond- when was the last time someone shifted their sound so completely that an actual genre change was in order? I'm just grateful that they were always heart-on-sleeve emotional, comforting and hopeful all these years... And glad for them that they're now more comfortable with things and are embracing their own skin... They've got to do that - after giving so much love and acceptance to everyone else, it's about time Coldplay did that for themselves too (accept and acknowledge themselves), while also defining a bit what they feel they're about (rather than just what everyone else thinks they should be about). Again in a way, it reflects the times - never before (in Western society) has there been as much acceptance for people to be who they are and the freedom to be themselves... Think legalization of gay unions and the changing of attitudes towards this issue in the time Coldplay have been around. The fact that they can now choose how they want to be defined and not be constrained by other's expectations is pretty amazing in itself and a sign of the times - whether it's conscious or not, they are now challenging societal views and serve as a test for whether the winds have truly changed, or whether it's all just lip service in terms of accepting people for who they truly are... And as usual, they are a little bit behind the cutting edge curve but show relevance by bringing the masses along with them. As CM said a few years ago, they're still working to write that perfect, happy song...
