Becausre you don't even know that person personally...you may not even find out about his/her death for months. Yeah, I know how that is, its happened to me my whole life, lol. So yeah, don't be afraid of her reaction...I was afraid of someone's reaction and I waited too long to ask her to "be mine" or anything cause I was too scared of her reaction. I only found out in the end that she didn't like me that way I liked her anymore because she thought that we'd never work out.
