I heard the live version of this song, and im not so sure on it. ya it sounds pretty good right now, and i know it will be amazing once we hear the studio version. but i dont know, to me it doesnt sound right for the first single, i just dont think it sounds like the song to bring people back from such along break. i am hopefully wrong, but of all the new tracks it is actually my least favourite. Let me know what you think. By the way, we also know that the video has not been shot yet, debs from the official site posted that today in the q&a

I think that What If would have been a better choice for the first single. But maybe the studio version of Speed of Sound knocks everyone down.

Yeah...well i dont think In My Place was the best song on the last album, but that was released first...And it later came out that was the first good song the band thought they had written after parachutes and so it was an important song for them- they said they released it first because it sounded like it could have been on parachutes and it introduced arobtth, like a crossover song. Therefore maybe they see speed of sound as an introduction to the new album, and a song which is similar to stuff on arobtth in terms of its sound? i dont think non coldplay fans would get it if say square one was released first, because it sounds quite different from their other stuff, i guess its just like if after parachutes they had gone and released clocks first- i dont think people would get it?

'In My Place' was also one of the hardest songs they ever had composed... it wasnt so easy to record.. they kept changing stuff.. but in the end, came out with an excellent song. :cool:

 

Speed Of Sound is a good tune.. and I think its a good come back song... however.. i would've picked Square One... I can jam to that one more so. :cool:

I think the opposite actually. I think it will make a great first single, something that a lot of people will like. What If should not be the first single, a song like that, X&Y's The Scientist, needs to be maybe 3rd out or something like that. Its the album's gem and shouldn't be thrown out there right off the bat.

see to me What If is not much like the scientist, its more like Amsterdam? with the epic buildup and all.

Speed of sound is good, but I think X&Y will be a lot better.

Well form what they said at the gig the other night "What If" is a song their really proud of. I get what you mean about it sounding like Amsterdam, owenrees. I think "Speed of Sound" is probably the most easily accessible song out of the new ones that they played, it's gets going straight away just like "Im My Place" does, so i can see why they've done it!

 

I think "What If" is going to be their trump so they won't show it just yet!

Ill tell you why in my opinion speed of sound is the first single and not what if....a rush of blood to the head had a mellow mood to the album...most songs were mellow...the band wants this new album to be different from the last album...what if had a mellow mood to it, and if it was released as a single, the first single, peole would think that this album is alot like a rush of blood to the head. Speed of sound is a fast paced upbeat song, and its different coldplay, but its good coldplay. Plus, its a great song, so nothing to worry about people!

i think hes right, but we have been told the second single has been decided, im guessing that is what if. although im really beginning to LOVE white shadows!

Still there a lot of other new songs (potential singles maybe) that I haven't heard yet, but I think White Shadows could become a (second?) single.

I don't think it's a good choice either.

I agree in that sense that its more like Amsterdam with its build up and all, but I meant in terms of What If being this album's The Scientist---the one they are most proud of.

its funny how we all ask for new music and then when they play some tracks everyone is quick to critique them.I personally didnt really think to much of Speed of Sound on the first listen but i love it now and think its just fine as their first single.Ive come to understand you cant judge Coldplays songs on the first listen, i keep playing them over and over again and i eventually like them all and plus the quality of the songs arent very good and im sure the studio versions are much better!Thats just my personal opinion.

at first what if and white shadows didnt really sit well with me, but after you give it a few listens, it sounds great..they grow on you..i love all their new songs...their gonna be amazing on the cd

I fink white shadows would be a better first single, since i really like that song, and it was in my head all day lol. but speed of sound isn't too bad either....just the title is a bit..well...i dunno.. :huh:

i like all the new songs honsetly, except im not that keen on A Message until i hear an album version. did u read chris said that he is excited, he said when they play square one its gonna be really great live. I totally see that he is really into this song!
