Has Rock Stopped Rolling?

Has Rock Stopped Rolling?

If you live in major markets such as Philadelphia, Miami, Houston or Washington, D.C., the answer seems to be yes. All four cities have recently lost premier rock radio stations as ratings for the genre continue to slide nationwide, down 20% since 1998. What's filling the void? Urban hip-hop stations and Hispanic channels. Spanish-language radio ratings are up 30% since 1998. Meanwhile, hip-hop and R&B dominate today's airwaves. At any moment, only 6% of teens are listening to rock, compared to almost 20% listening to urban stations and 40% listening to Top-40 programming (which is predominantly hip-hop and R&B).

Rolling Stone, 3/24/05

lately so have I!

thank goodness I have like 5 rock stations to choose from here in NY, but only 1 alternative rock station.. (KROC- 92.3 fm!)

I listen to almost anything.

-Hip Hop(Good and Bad), Rock etc.

I dont really focus on one genre,it all works for me.

these facts suck :dozey: wt happened to the world today?...most of the hip-hop singers of the rappers sing stupid songs with no meaningful lyrics, for example take jay-z or ja-rule

well atleast eminem is sayin wt he feels but still... he says some stupid things too

see now I USE TO like Jay Z... back in 95... to me thats when good rap stopped. It must have died or something.. lol the only rapper out right now, who in my opinion is 'saying something' is Common, Kanye, EM (to a certain extent) and thats it.

Its all about the flow and of course rhymes.

Jay-z is good at what he does..i cant say anything about the lyrics or the rest of the people you mentioned but i love him.

Most of the great rappers came out of New York

I.E. - Boricua's own Big Pun(rest in piece), Fat Joe, Jay-Z and etc

give me one good jay-z song pls, i would like to listen to it...maybe u guys are right...i didn't know any of them before 95... i heard to some of jay-z's lyrics when he joined with LINKIN PARK (i like them)...linkin park has bueatiful lyrics combined with jay-z bad lyrics  i know wt i'm talkin about, i have the dvd, it has a nice tune but the lyrics dont go together at all...actually from wt lyrics i heard from jay-z such as 99 problems...he is just rhymin with no true meanin

^Any of jiggers songs is a masterpiece. You just have to listen to it carefully.

The beats/The flow..i cant say anything about the lyrics.

Linkin parks lyrics arent the best..its all about a teens life.

What we like to bitch about etc..it doesnt apply to them.

Good Hip Hop i would say consists of

The Roots

Talib Kweli

Black Star

Mos Def

Kanye west

They are the ones to watch.

The real thing

could u give me names of songs...i wanna try them out...i am not that rap fan, but i am open minded :)

Sure

If you hate rap/hip hop then i am sure you wont like them though.

Its all about the beats/flow as i keep saying.

Mos Def-Ghetto Rock

Kanye west-Diamonds/Two words

Talib Kweli-Beautiful struggle

Black Star-Brown Skin Lady

The Roots-The Seed 2.0

No problemo Johnny! Take it easy buddy!

nice guy that jonny_t... umhmm *nods*

Yeah, he's swell. :)

anything really by kanye's good, even some of the ones he doesn't rap on.

but yeah the state of the radio now is just......eck. rock stations are going down, and every other station that isn't rock is turning to hip-hop. luckily in LA we have a good 4 or 5 rock stations, with different variety's, KROQ which plays almost every kind of rock, then there's indie, classic, hard/metal. but all the other stations have turned into 80% hip hop, w/ashley simpson or britney spears on the side

nice guy that jonny_t... umhmm *nods*
