Day 202 - Greeting Chris Martin

 

Chris_martin_1Well as day's go it's been a bit of a surreal one. Before I go into detail about how the lead singer of one of the world's biggest music acts popped over for a chat this afternoon, I'd just like to tidy one or two other things up.

 

To begin with, an email from someone who wanted to point out a couple of inaccuracies that I made in my posting titled "Greeting David Suchet". Firstly, In the film Goodfellas, Henry delivers the silencers to his friend named 'Jimmy' and not to 'Tommy' (who had already been, how you say, whacked?). Secondly, in the same film, the babysitter is taking a flight to Pittsburgh and not to Philadelphia. So there you go, we can all sleep a bit easier now. Anyway just to thank Mr Scorsese for pointing that out to me.

 

Actually it was a lady called Martine.

 

It also appears that my local newspaper the Hampstead & Highgate Express has run another piece about my project so I thank them for their interest in it and in particular, for not using the photo that looks like my head has been wedged in a goldfish bowl.

 

Finally, and I know that I've pledged not to mention politics on these pages so forgive me, today I read that Lord Neil Kinnock who was kind enough to meet me on Wednesday, made a statement about education this morning. I have no idea what his statement said but I totally agree with it because I though he was a very nice man.

 

So anyway, it appears that the high-flying residents of London NW3 are starting to rally round me in my bet against Michael. Chris Martin today Jonathan Ross tomorrow and who knows, maybe Jude and Sienna Sunday lunchtime, but I wouldn't bet on it.

 

I've waxed lyrical about Chris Martin and Coldplay a number of times since I set this page up, long before he agreed to the handshake to be fair, but the fact that he was willing to pop round to my flat to accommodate my request really hammered home just what a good bloke he must be. Gideon will no doubt say I'm sucking up to someone again, but come on, he's only in the country for a few days, his wife is pregnant yet he still went out of his way to help.

 

At this stage I would again like to thank my flatmate Lois and her work colleague Paul for facilitating this meeting. Lois told me last night that Paul and Chris would pop round to the flat lunchtime today, since which time I've been rushing round emptying ashtrays, running the old 'J Edgar' over the carpet and feverishly cleaning the moussaka encrusted plate next to the sink.

 

Chris and Paul turned up as pre-arranged and as if having this giant of the music industry sitting on my own coffee table (it's a very low and sturdy pine one) wasn't surreal enough, the three of us then settled down to watch a report on Sky News about a large whale swimming up the Thames past Battersea.

 

I've since recounted this to Michael, who wasn't aware of the whale story or that Chris was popping over, and he asked me whether I'd been standing next to a petrol pump for too long today, but that is exactly what happened. You can even see my TV in the photo.

 

Anyway Chris was an absolute star. I congratulated him on the recent announcement made by him and Gwynneth and we chatted about the bet and how I needed 100 handshakes to win it and how I only had about 50 with 3 weeks to go and how I am therefore destined to lose. He said that he was happy to help someone from his neighbourhood and he even wrote a message with some drawings on it that some lucky so and so will win in the charity auction, and Paul very kindly said that he would pass something else on for the auction.

 

So what a day. I am now looking forward to winning £85million on the Euro Lottery tonight.
