How much did Coldplay change in the last years?

Featured Replies

lyrically. and maybe not only.

i mean their opening song on Parachutes says:

"we live in a beautiful world

yeah we do, yeah we do

we live in a beautiful world"

the title is Don't Panic and the song was named Beatiful World originally

but if we take the last song from X&Y (no, it's not TKC because it's hidden and it's tribute to Johnny Cash, so doesn't fit to the album at all) which is Twisted Logic, we see the totally opposite side:

"Hundreds of years in the future

there could be computers

looking for life on earth "

"If somebody made it

Someone will mess it up"

so does it mean their lyrics and views on today's world changed completely during the years?

maybe their lyrics didn't change but i really think their point of view changed

the songs before X & Y are very melancolic and sad and all that ... the songs had soul

but nowadays ... i don't wanna say that they totally suck but they're not the same anymore. okay, fix you is sad but ... it just doesn't remind me of the old Coldplay days.

perhpas it's because chris is all happy now ... he's got a wonderful family and when they wrote the lyrics for Parachutes and AROBTTH he didn't have anything

mmmmh...well I think that it's all about The "X&Y" theory that everything turns around extremes and pessimism and optimism ...so you know...maybe their views haven't change it's just the moment in which they wrote the songs that was different...but maybe I'm wrong..

^ I agree. X&Y has a theme, whereas previous albums didn't. I also think it'd be pretty repetitive and unoriginal if they came around singing about a beautiful worlds again.

As for how they act.. it's all confidence. They sold well and are confident people like them, it's obvious in how they perform. But that only lasts until someone calls them a shit band or something, and then they get all depressed again. So.. when one thinks about it, nothing has really changed in that department!

Maybe they've just grown up, and they see things in a different way...they wrote don't panic when they weren't 20 yet...in 5-6 years things obviously change ;)

I think this last 2 years they've changed a lot. Now they're closer to the audience and stopped being so shy.

yah and their experiences, both musically and personally in their lives have affected them and have changed them. not for the bad, but i mean everyone grows up and deals with life experiences. i think change it good, its better then hearing the same crap over and over again. i like new dimensions musically and lyrically

i really like that look on it.....certain emotions inspire songs....but i still think he has so much more to give though even though he is settled in his family life nowadays as do the others

Well, if you think about it, tey've changed lyrically through all three albums, but in some ways, they haven't.

They go from a very optomistic, hopeful view on the world and people around them with "Don't Panic". It's almost a plea for people to stop being so cynical and wraped up in petty matters to enjoy the world around them.

But then, you have "We Never Change" which points out the flaws in humanity and how they never seem to change, no matter what one does to mend their ways. This can give a very negative connotation to the world.

And with a new album, you go from the gentle ballad of hope opening Parachutes to the explosive, anguished "Politik" hailing in A Rush of Blood. The song points out all that's wrong with the world and attempts to bring to light how the lowly are treated and the common rights they are denied, a clear contradiction to "Don't Panic".

"Twisted Logic" is a murky, heavy song throwing insight to the future of the world according to its current state. While "Speed of Sound" marvels at the miracles often overlooked in life.

These songs all show Coldplay's maturation as a band, but also how little they have changed. They all appreciate what the see, do and are given. They sing about things they care and know about and even though they've written several anguished, almost cynical songs about the world, Don't Panic and Speed Of Sound show that they still think that the world is beautiful and life is amazing.

To say that Coldplay songs aren't sad anymore and are therefore not soulful, is a ridiculous conjecture. I agree that there are songs on X&Y that have edited out all human fraility, but if you really think about it, Coldplay still write about the same things they always have: the human life and mind. Even though it may not sond like it, "Talk" is about being lost and wanting to reach someone, but always falling short; "White Shadows" is about being part of a system, a cog in a tremendous wheel, the monotony and indiviuality-chrushing ways of society, ect...

Chris is married. Chris is rich. Chris has a family. Yes.

But he's still a human being. He still has problems and trials and tribulations and things to worry about. He will always have things to write about as long as he's still a person.

As to what esel has changed in them... really only their stage presence.

overall Coldpaly has lost that edge they had 7 years ago

their stage presense? how then? sorry i have no seen them this tour well...never so i wouldnt know the difference! and it reallt grates on me when people think they have changed and will not care anymore just becuase they are rich and secure in their lives...

It's not that they've grown apatheticc and concieted, it's simply that they've become much more confident on stage. Jonny and Guy move around alot more and Chris talks and interacts with the audience. There's a certain personable atmosphere to a Coldplay concert that you wouldn't have gotten so much back in 2003-2000.

hmm yes i agree there...i see what u mean..but i think that good in a way isnt it? i mean as long as they done it becuase they wanted to,not becuase to please others

i think the 9-11 changed them a lot

i dont think that 9-11 change them that much i think that chris now writes about thinks that he dosent understand ( haha ) i mean like dead and things like that on parachutes the lyrics or at least must of them where about how humans are , i just think that they have changed coz they dont like to do the same music all the time but thats just me tought :P

^9/11 did change them quite a bit... I know it inspired Chris to write Politik and he said it made them more aware and want to be more involved in issues that affect everyone.. among other things. But I guess 9/11 changed everyone, at least a little.

But... Coldplay never had an Edge. I think that's U2

I kid, but you really believe Coldplay even had an edge 7 years ago? In 1999? They were more inexperienced than anything, I wouldn't really consider that edgy.

But... Coldplay never had an Edge. I think that's U2

.

LMAO !!!!

I don't think they really changed their view...I mean...the example of don't panic is a good one...because it is such a antithesis shown there...I mean the text is "we live in a beautfiul world" but it is written in a minor tone...which actually is a sad tone....

I couldn't agree more..

people's emotions change from day to day.. one day you feel like the world is amazing and great and the next you think it sucks.

And it doesn't only have to do with what goes on in their personal lives but with what happens around the world. Events like Live 8 when all the world got together for Africa make you feel good about the world we live in. And also things like war and poverty makes it seem awful.

I think their songs can be sad but possitive.. like "Everything's not lost" in Parachutes and "Fix you" in X&Y. So if you think about it they haven't changed that much.

^ all i can say about the two preview posts up there is ditto lol
