Are religious traditions dumb?

Featured Replies

well, today was Good Friday, right? Apparantely catholics are not supposed to eat meat on this day... the church also says we should help and care about the poor...

here's what happened today... I was having dinner with my work mates and this girl ordered a pizza with ham... another one asked me if I wasn't eating meat cause of the religion, I said I didn't care about that, it was a simple coincidence... the first one listening to us said: OMG... totally forgot!!! and started puting the ham on the side... I just felt like laughing!!!

here's my doubt: what is worse, eating meat on a Good Friday or voluntaraly waste food with so many people needing it?

lmfao, religion's ridiculous. It's just a form of brainwashing the masses, and it always has been. I don't belittle people who have a strong conviction for it, as long as it's GENIUNE. And not political, or to get attention, or whatever.

I think it's pretty hysterical when people are like "Oh shit, it's SUNDAY? I have to go to church!". Well, if you cared, wouldn't you have been all ready, etc?

Organized religion is not about individuality, it's about conforming. The "thing" that I believe in is not something that judges you on what you eat, what you wear, who you talk to, who you share a bed with. That being judges you on what you've done for the world, and those in it.

I could care less about eating meat on a Sunday at 2pm to get my free ticket through the pearly gates. But hell, I'm vegetarian, so maybe I'm lucky. LMFAO.

Well...in general I think religious traditions are not dumb...I mean what would be christmas without traditions....?

How come i always agree with you? :P

I also think traditions, just in general, are dumb. But it´s a way to feel safe, i think.

But i´m often against religions too. I mean religions as a whole, and not what one can think individually. i hate it when ppl try to show which religion they belong, if you feel good about something, that i think is quite private, why showing it to everybody wearing a neckless or a pin or talking about it all the time, just keep it to yourself... I think religions are only there to separate ppl. It could be just something personal, though i´ve tried to be objective, but i´ve been discriminated for being atheist a lot of times, and im so tired of it. :\

You always agree with me because I'm always right!:smug: LMFAO! I'm just kidding, of course I'm not.;)

Throughout history, I've noticed that religion has been used as something to fuel the majority of the masses. Governments use it as a propoganda tool. Look at America, right now. The evengelical right is incredibly strong. Not a day goes by that I don't hear some man preaching at me about how all the Arabs are going to hell and if you don't kill them, then you will too. It's so strange. Another very easy example is Nazi Germany. The targetting of religious (political, social and sexual as well) groups was running rampant. We stopped that. But in America, it almost seems like we are doing the same thing. The Catholic Church SHUNS the gay community. It just sends the wrong message across.

Religion, sadly, pushes people away from God. It's certainly done that to me...

Yeah, traditons make people feel safe, it's like they sense a being looking up/down high fiving them or something. I don't think they're dumb as long as you keep it to yourself, but when Jehova's Whitnesses come to my door trying to convince me that Jesus loves me...it's a pain in the ass

^I couldn't agree more. One of the reasons why I'm not a religious person (even though I'm Jewish) is the massive discrimination promoted by the church. That and punishing abortion

^very true (also the first part, if you´re always right, and i always agree with you, then im always right too!:smug: I love mathematics...)

Now, talking seriously, the other day on my school´s entry wall, there was a big graffitti reading ´heil hitler´. I´m really sacared of where the world is going. I mean, im scared that the world is going nowhere, just reapiting history over and over again...:stunned:

a la mierda...

I would send all neo-nazis to the Auschwitz memorial museum in Poland
