cyber_patchy
Hi I'm just about to buy an electric guitar and was wondering what are the essential pedals to have, cos there are loads of the things. also which makes would you recommend cheers :)
my_star_is_fading
Depends what music you're playing... I use wah alot, but then again im into funk. You should try out different distortion pedals, and see what you like. Delay (or to plebs, "echo") is also pretty useful aswell. I also use things like pitch bend (like the digitech whammy...thats a cool pedal!), and an acoustic simulator. As for brands, I pretty much always use Boss. Theyre solidly built, and have very high quality circuitry. Line6 are also very good (if a little expensive), as are Marshall (try the Bluesbreaker distortion) But to start out with id recomend just buying a cheap multi FX pedal, so you can find out what you like. Try the Behringer X-Vamp ( http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=3846464 )

athalon
most people wonder this, so here are links to the pedals jonny uses. some are cheap that you can buy, some aren't. (dl4) Boss TU-2 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-TU2-Chromatic-Tuner?sku=213012 Proco Vintage Rat http://www.zzounds.com/item--PRCVINTRAT MXR Phase 90 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXR-M101-Phase-90-Pedal?sku=151100 Boss DD-5 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-DD3-Digital-Delay-Pedal?sku=151310 I gave you the link to the DD-3 even though he actually uses a DD-5. (I believe) DD-5 is out of production. Boss RV-3 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-RV5-Digital-Reverb-Effects-Pedal?sku=151303 Again, I gave the link to the RV-5 even though he uses the RV-3. Same reason, out of production. The next two pedals have changed a bit. At the beginning, he was using a Boss OS-2 which is a combination of overdrive and distortion. Now he uses a Colorsound Tonebender. Tonebenders are very rare and expensive. Boss OS-2 runs about $80, and works fairly well. You make the decision. Boss OS-2 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Boss-OS2-OverdriveDistortion-Guitar-Effects-Pedal?sku=151336 Colorsound Tonebender http://www.ebay.com MXR Micro Amp http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=151104 Line 6 DL-4 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-DL4-Delay-Modeler-Pedal?sku=150380 If you want the same variety of effects without spending the money to buy the exact pedals Jonny uses, here are some suggestions. Korg GA-30 Tuner http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Korg-GA30-GuitarBass-Tuner?sku=210526 Danelectro DJ-2 Distortion http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Danelectro-DJ2-TBone-Distortion-Pedal?sku=151861 Arion SPH-1 Phaser http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Arion-SPH1-Stereo-Phaser?sku=150503 Arion SAD-3 Delay http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Arion-SAD3-Stereo-Delay-Guitar-Effects-Pedal?sku=150516 Danelectro DJ-4 Reverb http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Danelectro-DJ4-Corned-Beef-Reverb-Pedal?sku=151863 That should run you about $115 USD, which is about the same price as ONE well known brand pedal. (Boss, Line 6) I would suggest reading reviews at http://www.harmony-central.com before buying anything. Lastly, I would stay away from multi-effects boxes. It will just be a waste of money. my_star_is_fading
meh...I dissagree with the multi fx comment. They are not a waste of money. If you buy a CHEAP one, it means you can actually hear the different effects. Ultimately of course, if you ever buy a single pedal, ALWAYS try it out. dont just buy it online (unless its a rare one you found on ebay etc)
athalon
i agree that you should try every pedal you're even considering. never buy without trying it out and reading reviews for reliability issues. i'd suggest doing the following. go to a music store and try a whole bunch of effects to get an idea of what each does. test out some distortion boxes, some overdrive, some delay, some reverb, some phasers, wahs, tremolos, compressors, envelope filters, and maybe some of the less used types. buying a cheap multi-fx unit just to hear what each effect sounds like is in my opinion a waste of money because i don't know of a single multi-fx unit i'd use except for MAYBE the really expensive roland one. it's somewhere around $600 i think, and it's huge. if you don't plan on taking guitar too seriously, get a multi-fx unit, but if you plan on playing guitar a log and being serious about it, buy single effects units IN MODERATION. a lot of effects can be good but try not to have them as a crutch; try to keep the idea of minimalism unless you're jonny greenwood or ed o'brien. coldplay_97
all i will say is that the Pod XT Live is an aweeeesome multi effects pedal board. its a bit pricy $400 however its crazy and will last a looong time. if thats too much try to get some sort of multi effects pedal thingy, the single effects are extremely pricy but alot better quality

athalon
oh, ok. i just had to guess and thought since he replaced it with a tonebender that maybe it was another distortion.
wsosfr
first pedals I would suggest starting with a USED multi until u r familiar with the various sounds. USED, so it will be cheap. After you know the differences between distortion and overdrive, delay, phase, etc. buy the analog pedals. There is a simple website http://www.noiseon.com , with sound samples of many guitar effects. I like to go there and hear the effects when i'm looking for a specific tone. Dcullsjp
I think it depends on what kind of music that you like to play. If you want to play Coldplay then you should purchase an Echo pedal and a distortion pedal, but I would buy a good echo pedal that will give you a lot of different echoes to choose from. also the echo is really good for U2, as well. I suggest buying a Danelectro DanEcho Pedal. Its about a 100$, but its really good.
