June 7, 200620 yr British rockers Keane find the continuous comparison to Coldplay "grating". The Somewhere Only We Know group are fed up with the likeness and deny being musically directed by the Chris Martin-fronted band. Singer Tom Chaplin says, "Even though we probably share a lot of influences, Coldplay have never been a real direct influence on us." "We find it grating. But I suppose they have been an inspiration - at the beginning people called them 'Sissy bed-wetters' and now they're rock gods." http://www.contactmusic.com/
June 7, 200620 yr Haha, they should be proud of being compared to such a fantastic band ;) But I gotta agree, I wouldn't compare these both.. Keane sounds way different than Coldplay, especially Tom's high, totally different voice doesn't sound like Chris or Coldplay at all and their sound in general is very different, too.
June 7, 200620 yr Yeah, Keane sounds like someone that wants to sound like Coldplay(amazing) but fails miserably. And Toms voice is allllllootttt more bland then Chris's. Its like theres no drive in it like Chris's.
June 7, 200620 yr I thought Keane was sick of Coldplay. :laugh3: I kinda like Keane. :nice: But... Yeah... But hey--Keane was the original Coldplay. :laugh3:

Its like theres no drive in it like Chris's. oh my. lol sorry but Tom has an amazing voice, listen to Bedshaped live and you'll see :) and yep, comparisons to Coldplay are wrong.
June 7, 200620 yr i would say keane am/were simaler to coldplay..the piano backdrop, the way songs are set out...but yea chris and tom's voices are very different
June 7, 200620 yr who is the better vocalist? My vote goes to Tom... I've seen them both live.. and unlike Chris... Tom's vocals gave me goosebumps. He's an amazing talent. Now, the band as a whole... clearly Coldplay has more 'experience' HOWEVER, Keane has branched out into new sounds and productions on their sophmore album.. as did Coldplay with AROBTTH.. but again... you can't really compare the two. They're different sounds, Keane seems a bit more poppy... and Coldplay, well.. they used to be emotional.. now, I'm just not sure. Its like comparing apples and oranges... you just don't do it.
June 7, 200620 yr They sound similar if compared to say... Led Zepplin or Elvis, so I can see how people who don't care about either would make the connection, but they do use what they have in different ways.
June 7, 200620 yr I really don't think Tom's voice is THAT good - it's definitely original, but in its own way, you know. Just like Chris doesn't have the typical great voice, his voice is original and recognicable, just like Tom's.. Although I gotta say that his voice sounds VERY different now on "Is it any wonder?" than on their debut album.. Seems like the computer helped him a bit sounding less girly and screaming ^^
June 7, 200620 yr Author Seems like the computer helped him a bit sounding less girly and screaming ^^ have you heard Keane live?
June 7, 200620 yr somehow keane is similar to coldplay, but chris's voice is so much better then toms and coldplay songs are so much better quality than keane songs...coldplay is so much better than keane...but still i love keane too... :)
June 7, 200620 yr have you heard Keane live? Yes, I have. And I loved them live. I didn't say that I don't like Tom's voice - I'm saying that he DOES sound a bit too high and girly sometimes but I think he can keep his voice on the same level very, very well which is great when he sings live. I know that they're awesome live and I love Tom's voice because it's special and unique.
June 7, 200620 yr Author well, Chris sounds a bit girly as well sometimes. but it doesn't matter anyway. and comparing their voices looks a bit pointless to me. they have completely different voices, and i can't really hear any similarities ;) comparing Keane to a guitar band is ridiculous...anyhow
June 7, 200620 yr well, Chris sounds a bit girly as well sometimes. but it doesn't matter anyway. and comparing their voices looks a bit pointless to me. they have completely different voices, and i can't really hear any similarities ;) comparing Keane to a guitar band is ridiculous...anyhow That's what I said, you simply can't compare them! Yes, they do come from the same area of the world. Yes, they're about the same age. Yes, they belong to the current "British music", but that's about it. Keane are a lot more pop while Coldplay are more into the direction of rock and indie. But you're right, Chris sounds a bit girly sometimes as well ;)
June 7, 200620 yr I love Chris's voice more than anything (obviously, haha) but yeah Tom has a nice voice too. Although in Is It Any Wonder he sounds eerily like Bono. Seriously, I hate making U2 comparisons, but when I first heard that song I really thought it was a U2 song. :stunned: Anyway, I would be really pissed too if I was in a band that was constantly compared to another band, because it makes it hard to establish your own identity. Coldplay got enough of that too with the neverending Radiohead comparisons. Every band gets compared to someone else. you just have to deal with it I guess.
June 7, 200620 yr I don't think Keane have said anything "out of order" here. They're not slagging CP off. I'm just glad that BOTH bands are around!!
June 7, 200620 yr I'm glad bands use Coldplay as an inspiration but not be like... a complete copy-cat 'cause that would be annoying.
June 7, 200620 yr i love coldplay and i love keane. They are two different bands and i agree that they shouldn't be compared with each other anymore and i like Tom's voice i think he has an amazing voice
June 7, 200620 yr Personally, Keane and Coldplay sound NOTHING alike. People tell me all the time, and it gets aggravating for the fans to hear them compared. I love Coldplay more than Keane, but Keane is my second favorite band, so I'm a huge fan of both... Tom's voice sounds more youthful than Chris', but that could be because he looks like a 12 year old boy... ;D
June 8, 200620 yr Comparisons suck the big one anyway. If I were an artist I'd get ticked off getting compared to any band. Even though the music media does it all the time and I'd just have to get used to it. It's like the Jonsi-Thom comparisons. Comparing two of the most unique voices in music is like comparing a fish to a pack of biscuits. < © Chris Martin
