RONALDO ... crying shameCRISTIANO RONALDO missed out on the World Cup’s Best Young Player award after being branded a cheat by Sun readers AND a FIFA bigwig.

Your votes knocked Ron the Rat off top spot in the online poll before the Gillette award was handed to German striker Lukas Podolski.

Then FIFA admitted the Portugal winger’s cheating, and his behaviour in the game against England, DID count against him.

Ronaldo, 21, urged the referee to punish Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney for his stamp on Ricardo Carvalho and winked at the bench when the England star was sent off.

Holger Osieck, the head of FIFA’s technical study group, said: “It is an important criteria that attitude and behaviour should be considered.

“What we would like to have is not only highly-talented players but they should be role models and give an incentive to youngsters not only football-wise but behaviour-wise.

“We want to have decent behaviour. Of course I have to admit we were critical of what we saw from Ronaldo.

“Players aren’t so mature. They do have their weaknesses because they aren’t fully developed and, behaviour-wise, we can look for some improvement.

“Younger players find it difficult to handle stress situations.”

Lothar Matthaus, the Germany legend and part of the Gillette award team, agreed that Ronaldo’s behaviour was taken into account.

Matthaus said: “We will never have 100 per cent fair play. We aren’t just firing against Ronaldo.

“We are looking at him at the moment because he was obviously doing something but there were coaches and other players doing things as well. It’s part and parcel of football. It’s not nice and not fair but you find it everywhere.

“Ronaldo might have accumulated a few minus points due to the gesture with Rooney but sometimes you forget the laws in the heat of the fight.”

Matthaus asked fans to go easy on Ronaldo, arguing that Diego Maradona famously cheated, too.

But that was not the best comparison if he wished to appeal to English fans.

He added: “Give Ronaldo a chance and forgive him. Maradona scored with God’s hand and that was not fair play, either. Give him a break.”

Matthaus revealed Rooney’s pre-World Cup injury had ruined his chances of winning the young player trophy.

He said: “Rooney was one of the favourites but he came to the tournament badly injured.

“After such a long break he couldn’t deliver a performance you would have expected like we saw at Euro 2004 and in Manchester.”

While Rooney has missed out on the Best Young Player award, only one England player makes it into the Squad of the Tournament — John Terry.

The 23 players, chosen by FIFA’s technical study group, includes seven from Italy and four from the other finalist France.

i really am angry at him as well, but because of another reason (you know, he said "i wanna leave United and go to Madrid..."), but i think we should leave him alone. he is a great player though i did disappoint in his personality...a lot

This has nothing to do with what happened to England.

They didn't deserve to win the World Cup, because they didn't play well enough and they had a terrible coach who didn't have a clue.

I have also already stated that Rooney was an idiot and his red card was justified, based on the video close-ups - although I don't think the ref had only originally whistled for a foul before "The Cheat" got involved.

However, Portugal haven't deserved to win anything either because of their persistent cheating tactics, and Ronaldo has been the worst offender.

His "winking" after Rooney's sending-off showed the whole world what a complete asshole he is.

FIFA have recognised this now, and it's just a pity that he can't be banned for as long as Rooney will be, as his actions were every bit as disgraceful.

Justice needs to be served.;)

in the biggest part of cases he really get kicked...he doesn't dive more than some other football players (see: similar type to Ronaldo=fast, skilled, attacking players) do.

he's still very young don't forget he's still growing up. i think it's a bigger shame to see dives and cheats from older players (30-32 years old)

 

Ronaldo is a big talent but still young to decide himself. i would listen to some adults at his place and i wouldn't leave United now...

I think it's good that behaviour and attitute gets considered as well.. Ronaldo didn't deserve this award when there are other players like Podolski who do a brilliant performance WITHOUT cheating and winking.. I'm not saying that other players don't do it, but I think it's good that the FIFA looks at such stuff..

cheating!!?? I wonder what country wears a star on the chest due a ball that never crossed the goal line... and you dare to talk about cheating!!!

 

I know it must hurt to lose with "little" Portugal two times in a row, as it hurted us to lose to France (again)... but I recommend you to open up a dictionary and search for the meaning of fair-play!!!
